Screaming, crying, throwing up
Revisado: 12-19-24
Gosh darn it, Sanderson has done it again. A work of genius. I am so upset by the ending and simultaneously so excited about it. Please read this series.

About 7 thousand F bombs
Revisado: 05-25-23
This book was recommended by a friend and WOW did I get sucked in. The plot is absolutely incredible. Count of Monte Cristo meets Oceans 11 meets a fantasy medieval setting. But after over 20 hours of listening I had to delete the book and sorrowfully say goodbye. Some will call me a prude but with an average of like 5 f bombs per page I just kind of felt gross whenever I listened to the book. I realized despite the wonderful story line I was actually lessening the quality of my life and my mood in general by reading it. Alas, I will never know how Locke’s story ends, but I think I’m better off leaving it alone. But if you really don’t mind excessive language by all means enjoy!

Maps have a mysterious hold over us. Whether ancient, crumbling parchments or generated by Google, maps tell us things we want to know, not only about our current location or where we are going but about the world in general. And yet, when it comes to geo-politics, much of what we are told is generated by analysts and other experts who have neglected to refer to a map of the place in question.

Life-changing, massively insightful
Revisado: 03-22-22
I’m someone who has always wished to have a firmer understanding of history and geography, but not until this book have I been able to lock ideas in my mind. Finally because of this book I’m starting to understand the motivations, incentives, and barriers that shape the way our current world was formed and the forces that will shape humanity’s future. The writing and performance are both clear and top notch. I wish every high schooler could read this book.

Historia
This modern classic of social history and media traces the precipitous decline of childhood in America today, and the corresponding threat to the notion of adulthood. Deftly marshaling a vast array of research, Neil Postman suggests that childhood is a recent invention. But now the division between child and adult is eroding under the barrage of television, which turns the adult secrets of sex and violence into entertainment and pitches news and advertising at the intellectual level of 10-year-olds.

An incredible essay on history, education, and media
Revisado: 05-25-19
Mindbending and extremely accessible. It’s been a while since I’ve read a book that has left me with this many thoughts to grapple with. I was blown away by the author’s thesis about the impact of print, school, and media through the centuries. What an incredible wide-sweeping historical essay. I believe that a great deal of the books’s theories about TV apply directly to social media as well. An incredibly relevant read.

A call to arms against BRUNCH...and a how-to guide for fighting back, from the hosts of the hit podcast and public radio show The Dinner Party Download. Society is under threat. The culprit? Brunch. Not merely a forum for overpriced eggs, brunch is a leisure-time-squandering hellscape, embodying all that is soul-killing and alienating about modern life.

Delicious
Revisado: 03-27-18
Why is this book so gratifying? I don’t know but I loved every minute. As sparkling as the best dinner party conversation I’ve had, this book is a favorite just as entertainment. Throw on that solid opinions about small talk and building a guest list and playlist etc, plus the stirring call-to-arms, I will listen again for sure and will try out the podcast. I did put some parts on stereo for my middle-schooler because the book is ingenious but tried to avoid the language and references to orgies.

Essentialism is more than a time-management strategy or a productivity technique. It is a systematic discipline for discerning what is absolutely essential, then eliminating everything that is not, so we can make the highest possible contribution toward the things that really matter.

I didn't know I could like self-help this much
Revisado: 09-05-17
This book broke the mold for me. I am often attracted to several other genres before self-help. Lately I also like to hop from one book to another after three or four chapters. Not so with this book. I was hooked from the first time I started listening, was hungry to finish the entire time, and have already re-listened to two chapters. I am a disciple for life. I truly believe this book is for everyone, and that a listener will likely not know how badly she needs the book until she starts digesting its concepts. I cannot think of a book that has change my life more.
