Historia
It is 1930, the midst of the Great Depression. After her mysterious role in a family tragedy, passionate, strong-willed Thea Atwell, age 15, has been cast out of her Florida home, exiled to an equestrienne boarding school for Southern debutantes. High in the Blue Ridge Mountains, with its complex social strata ordered by money, beauty, and girls' friendships, the Yonahlossee Riding Camp for Girls is a far remove from the free-roaming, dreamlike childhood Thea shared with her twin brother on their family's citrus farm - a world now partially shattered.

Dysfunctional family of the 20s & 30s
Revisado: 07-29-15
Im not a big fan of books depicting dysfunctional families. So, despite the really impressive writing, I was anxious for this book to end. To me, it seemed like a parable about a self-focused mother who created a home environment propped on stilts of superiority and idealism. And because of her efforts to keep even her own family from peeking behind the curtain, a fissure grew to become a cavity that sucked the facade in. The story allowed me more understanding and subsequently even greater compassion for "loose girls."

Such enjoyment! Linda Lavin was PHENOMENAL!
Revisado: 07-19-15
This book provided so much enjoyment! Linda Lavin (I KNEW I recognized that voice!! Finally realized...It's Alice of Mel's Diner!) was superb. I usually like the narrators just fine but I gotta say - she embodied the main character. This story was touching and realistic - altho I'm a Catholic, not a Jew, haha! But, I very much appreciated the glimpse into a Jewish household as evolved thru the 20th century. Enjoy!

Refreshing story of honest effort
Revisado: 05-15-15
This was an enjoyable read akin to sherbet btwn courses. That's not to say it wasn't well written or lacked in character descriptions, etc. It kept a good pace and characters were well described with funny anecdotes. But, in the end I don't have the same conviction to pursue entirely green eating & the author seemed to judge folks not sharing in his same level of commitment. At times, he dug in his heels when interacting w/customers - choosing not to be customer focused but to instead, give precedence to his agenda - all things organic farming. When stopped by the police officer, why couldn't he just sell the man some meat? Or, towards the end, when a relocated, loyal customer called to ask if meats could be shipped, he just wouldn't do it. Instead, he pointed them again & again to local farming - which, I understand - was an effort to pay it fwd - encouraging other farmers to cultivate organic farming into their own community. I was raised in a farm community. My dad was a meat-cutter & owned his own grocery store. And, he would have said something like, "Conviction is good & all, but it doesn't put food on the table. Customers put food on the table." So, although I respect, benefit from & appreciate the author's success through green farming, I can't help but cringe when customer satisfaction isn't the end goal.

Historia
The spiritual traditions of the world describe paradise as both a state of mind and a harmonious garden of plenitude. Though we think of these stories as metaphors, our health and happiness and the health of the planet are not separate, unrelated states of being. Wisdom and grace lie within the sacred matrix of nature of which we are a part.

Not what I was looking for
Revisado: 09-01-12
Would you try another book from Sandra Anderson and/or the narrator?
Sandra's beliefs are in great contrast to my own. She tells stories of Gods & Goddesses & how that relates to our world & the downward spiral of our environment & the world's bad choices. I'm aware of the environment's challenges but I don't live in fear & yoga helps me stay calmer through practice. I didn't listen to more than half, fyi. I had reached my daily requirement for eye rolling & deleted the file.
