Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

Dickens. Salinger. Absurd. Current.
Revisado: 06-22-22
This novel was worthy of the Pulitzer. Wordy, yes, but erudite, edifying, and insightful. Boris is a transient teen Russian existentialist Tom Sawyer who finds our hero, a manhattan orphan with a heart of love, virtue and promise in a sin city coming of age circumstance. The morass of addiction cycles; the paralysis of guilt and shame and fear; the matter of fact experience of being bullied and moving on; the accumulated trauma of poor decision after poor decision; the notion of gender identity without judgement; and the learned experience from museums, books, and the streets--an ambitious scope contained in a seeming moment of clarity of the human condition. This is a rich novel that captures a time and cast as Owen Meaney's prayer did almost 25 years ago. It reminds me of Bret Easton Ellis' Less Than Zero--apparently a classmate of the author. The movie, well cast, sucks.

I like marvel comics. I like thrillers. I like graphic novels. I like stories. I like literature. I like wordplay. This was comic to prose mediocrity. Redundancy, cliche, and predictability. I would see see it comic form, but unless it came up with an original thought I wouldn't read beyond first issue. It tries to maximize the dead man's vault (if?), it fails.

a disciple of crichton

upside: reminds me of Andromeda Strain an Jurassic Park. An homage.
downside: after the fact the author references those two titles in the epilogue....a great book, but obviously influenced by Michael Crichton.

Historia
Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know.

Zachary Quinto is the highlight
Revisado: 12-29-19
the conceit is a bit far fetched, but once you get past it, the story is interesting, humorous andb clever. Zachary Quinto is a great narrator, slipping between characters and emotions with skill and craftsman commitment.
