Historia
Pickett's Charge is a detailed analysis of one of the most iconic and defining events in American history. This book presents a much-needed fresh look, including the unvarnished truths and ugly realities, about the unforgettable story. With the luxury of hindsight, historians have long denounced the folly of Lee's attack, but this work reveals the tactical brilliance of a master plan that went awry. Special emphasis is placed on the common soldiers on both sides, especially the non-Virginia attackers outside of Pickett's Virginia Division.

Support at least one claim
Revisado: 06-07-22
The author repeatedly stated that there are claims about the battle of Gettysburg that are common misconceptions yet in every case fails to support it with substantial evidence. How is it that Lee’s plan is so brilliant (as the author claims), and that he executes it with the “finest army the North American continent had ever seen”, yet it fails so spectacularly? I got about a third of the way through and gave up that he was ever going to get around to providing such evidence.

Digital Apollo examines the design and execution of each of the six Apollo moon landings, drawing on transcripts and data telemetry from the flights, astronaut interviews, and NASA's extensive archives. Mindell's exploration of how human pilots and automated systems worked together to achieve the ultimate in flight - a lunar landing - traces and reframes the debate over the future of humans and automation in space.

Working in human spaceflight, this provides fantastic historical context to the human- machine debates that continue on current development spacecraft. Very enjoyable and well told history that takes an objective position in that debate.

Historia
Between 1861 and 1865, the clash of the greatest armies the Western hemisphere had ever seen turned small towns, little-known streams, and obscure meadows in the American countryside into names we will always remember. In those great battles, those streams ran red with blood-and the United States was truly born.

A very thorough survey of the war
Revisado: 02-06-19
Covered all the bases and help stitch the conflict together for me rather than being a series of disjointed actions. I think it's important that the lecturer focused on people's writing at the time to build their disposition rather than relying on dubious post war memoirs.

Historia
In the early 1800s, three young men strode onto the national stage, elected to Congress at a moment when the Founding Fathers were beginning to retire to their farms. Daniel Webster of Massachusetts, a champion orator known for his eloquence, spoke for the North and its business class. Henry Clay of Kentucky, as dashing as he was ambitious, embodied the hopes of the rising West. South Carolina's John Calhoun, with piercing eyes and an even more piercing intellect, defended the South and slavery.

Performance was great!
The subject matter is very important for having an idea about the build up of tension since the founding that led to the civil war (and the origins of secession as an idea).

With his signature wit and thought-provoking insights, Neil deGrasse Tyson - one of our foremost thinkers on all things space - illuminates the past, present, and future of space exploration and brilliantly reminds us why NASA matters now as much as ever. As Tyson reveals, exploring the space frontier can profoundly enrich many aspects of our daily lives, from education systems and the economy to national security and morale.

Some good space nuggets
Revisado: 10-13-18
Aside from the fact that the narrator pronounced Saturn V as "Saturn Vee" instead of "Saturn five", there were definitely some good insights. Dr. Tyson got across well the dependence of the advances of the space race on the geopolitical situation (i.e. that progress in space is not inevitable, but subject to outside forces). It was a bit disjointed of a narrative though

Historia
Gene Kranz was present at the creation of America's manned space program and was a key player in it for three decades. As a flight director in NASA's Mission Control, Kranz witnessed firsthand the making of history. He participated in the space program from the early days of the Mercury program to the last Apollo mission, and beyond. He endured the disastrous first years when rockets blew up and the United States seemed to fall further behind the Soviet Union in the space race.

Revisado: 06-01-18
Kranz captures the spirit of exploration and calculated risk taking that brought us from a 4" flight to landing on the moon within a decade. A great insight to a very interesting world and a model to be followed for today.

Historia
Since the beginning of human history Mars has been an alluring dream - the stuff of legends, gods, and mystery. The planet most like ours, it has still been thought impossible to reach, let alone explore and inhabit. Now with the advent of a revolutionary new plan, all this has changed. Leading space exploration authority Robert Zubrin has crafted a daring new blueprint, Mars Direct, presented here with engaging anecdotes. The Case for Mars is not a vision for the far future or one that will cost us impossible billions.

Here's your next space policy
Revisado: 03-10-18
Zubrin coherently leads us through the path that it would take to sustainably put Americans on Mars (and grow a presence beyond flags and footprints). Not 15 years and hundreds of billions of dollars from now, but much sooner. Since the updated version, there's been much movement in the space industry, but we're still lacking the governmental leadership to step up and say "yes, we're setting Mars as THE objective, now NASA, go get it done! Great compilation of speeches
Revisado: 09-20-17
McCullough is a worthy voice of our country's ideals. A reminder that it is a nation made by people just as human as we are today, but towards lofty ideals to which we still strive. There was a bit of overlap in some of the stories owing to the nature of the compilation, but it didn't distract overall.

Historia
In the spring of 1940, the Germans launched a military offensive in France and the Low Countries that married superb intelligence, the latest military thinking, and new technology. It was a stunning victory, altering the balance of power in Europe in one stroke, and convincing the entire world that the Nazi war machine was unstoppable. But as Lloyd Clark, a leading British military historian and academic, argues, much of our understanding of this victory, and blitzkrieg itself, is based on myth.

Great analysis
Revisado: 04-28-17
Clark's analysis pushes past the normal quick, easy conclusions about the France 1940 campaign and develops a nuanced view of the downfall of a great power. The analysis was punctuated by accounts from the time that underscored the leaders views as events unfolded. Overall, very good read.
