Historia
Life’s tough when you’re trapped in an eight-year-old body on another world. His name is Eight. Not really, but that’s what the System decided after a slip of the tongue. One moment, he was stepping out the office door on the way home, and the next waking up on a hillside below a town wall. Oh, and the gate guard drove him off, because he thought Eight was a monster. What’s a boy to do in a world full of magic and so many, many hungry creatures searching for their next meal? Well, there’s an old man inside that body, and he'll use everything he’s learned to survive.

The Hatchet goes Portal Fantasy/LitRPG
Revisado: 11-02-22
I've read everything available on RoyalRoad.com already and i love it extremely. The main character is relatable and wise like a crazy combo of a highly educated grandpa and a kid who just wants to know everything. Lots of philosophy etc explored too, not a shallow book. Performance was overall very good but, uh, Mr. Tiedemann please look up how words you don't know are pronounced (unless they are made up - then ask the author). Eg. Brooch is pronounced bro-ch not brew-ch https://dictionary.cambridge.org/pronunciation/english/brooch. Anyway, this book covers a bunch of my favorite tropes: fish out of water/stranger in a strange land, starting over from scratch, wilderness survival, involuntary roommates (although not a room), cute pets (well - soon, but in the meantime we have Dr. Otter!) and much more. So enjoy! A great comfort novel to add to your re-read shelf.

Historia
It’s not easy making the career jump from office-supplies-store middle manager to heroic interdimensional adventurer. At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil. He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that’s just on the first day. He’s going to need courage, he’s going to need wit, and he’s going to need some magic powers of his own. But first, he’s going to need pants.

love this series
Revisado: 04-03-22
I've read the whole thing on royal road and pre-ordered all of the audiobooks I can,so don't expect a nuanced review on style and characterization. What I will say is that this is one of the few stories I've ever read that manages to be both outrageously funny and grimdark at the same time, often in the same scene. the only other series I can think of that has managed to do this so well before is the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher, except it sort of lost the funny and leaned into the grimdark in the later books (actually not sure, gave up on them when they stopped being fun). so, if you want fun or grimdark but would love both, this book's for you.

Historia
Across the world of Aster Fall, there are unique classes, but not all of them can be trained. They require quests and accomplishments that simply don't exist in the world. Some say the World Law itself is broken and that the world is falling apart. In comes Sam Hastern. His family has been cursed by one of these classes for the last 50 years. No one has ever managed to level it, condemning them to the lowest paying jobs and life in a barren village.

Unique cultivation/xianxia Father-Son Adventure
Revisado: 01-15-22
Reminds me a lot of Cradle by Will Wight despite the numerous differences - the narration by Baldtree only adds to the atmosphere. Very interesting world setting. Mostly litrpg but with strong xianxia elements. It's essentially a coming-of-age adventure for our mc who's family has quite literally been shafted by the world. But it also has strong slice of life vibes because he's with his dad the whole way and they clearly get along great (not that common in my experience with angry 18 yr old sons and not exactly cool dads). Pacing is good. No obvious grammar mistakes. A little more POV switching than I prefer but at least no flipping around in time point. Lots of potential in this series. looking forward to the rest of the series! Full disclosure- I'm a subscriber on patreon and I got a code from the author. But hey - that I'm a patron says something too, right?

I love them all, but this one may be a favorite
Revisado: 08-12-20
I think I enjoy these more "slice of life" stories of Penric and Desdemona. However, it's still a story about dealing with a desperate epidemic, past failures, and someone attempting to kill him, so it's not exactly staid.

Historia
Chip Connolly was a conscripted grunt in trouble. Here he was, stuck behind enemy lines with a bunch of cyber-uplifted rats and bats. Rats with human speech, but with rat values. Rats that knew what was worth fighting for: sex, food, and strong drink. True, they were holed up on a ruined wine-farm with enough brandy to swim in. Trouble was, there wasn't much food. And with shrew-metabolism the rats had to eat. He was next on the menu. The bats were no help: they were crazy revolutionaries planning to throw off the yoke of human enslavement with high explosive.

Historia
The appearance of the warp drive from the long lost Fenrir spaceship triggers an epic quest for Captain Mikhail Volkov. According to the drive's computers, Fenrir had been lost to hypothetical "nowhere" of subspace, but with the drive's housing covered with coral and sea life, obviously Fenrir has gone somewhere. Faced with genocide at the hands of the alien Nefrim, humans need a miracle to survive. On the chance that Fenrir's mysterious location holds such a miracle, Mikhail jumps into the unknown and crashes into the endless blue of the Sargasso Sea.

bad narrator almost ruins a great story
Revisado: 02-26-20
I really love this book but getting through listening to this narrator was difficult. he sounds like nails on chalkboard whenever he attempts to do a higher voice, such as any woman. unfortunately, one of the 3 main characters is female. too bad, I love this space opera featuring unique ideas, great character development, tight plotting and (partial spoiler) 2 tropes I love: brothers separated and finding each other and castaway being rescued and falling in love with rescuer.

Historia
Nikki is a horror novelist. Her choice of career is dictated by an obsessive compulsive disorder that forces her to write stories of death and destruction. She can't control it, doesn't understand it, but can use it to make money anywhere in the world. Currently "anywhere" is in Japan, hiding from her mother who sees Nikki's OCD as proof she's mentally unstable. Nikki's fragile peace starts to fall apart when the police arrest her for the murder of an American expatriate. Someone killed him with a blender.

Revisado: 02-26-20
Glad the narrator carried it off. The Japanese was pretty decently pronounced as far as I could tell and none of the voices were annoying. Recommend this for any anime fan or fans of urban fantasy who want something a bit different. As usual, Wen Spencer's characters are the real gems of the story. You'll care about Nikki from the beginning and care about Leo and Miriam and her kami friend.

It was whispered all through London society that he was a murderer, that he'd spent his youth in an asylum and was not to be trusted - especially with a lady. Any woman caught in his presence was immediately ruined. Yet Beth found herself inexorably drawn to the Scottish lord whose hint of a brogue wrapped around her like silk and whose touch could draw her into a world of ecstasy.

Oh ye civilized of Earth: Send forth your outcasts, your primitive throwbacks, your religious fundamentalists, your sexual separatists - and heck, you can even toss in your totalitarian crackpots in the bargain. Pack them all in sealed habitats, rocket them into space, and pronounce good riddance to those lunatics, oddballs, and losers! But if you happen to be an alien explorer stranded on that ship and looking to find a way home, well then, your one chance lies in seeking out the true iconoclasts in a sea of nutcase societies.

Revisado: 02-18-20
I think, even better than the Expanse. great character development, tight plotting, believable science. this is one to re-read over and over again. I would particularly recommend for those who don't enjoy reading about brutal violence or people being horrible (since it avoids being graphic or angsty) but know very well that those things happen and don't want them sugarcoated (since they do happen in this story).

didn't like it
Revisado: 02-16-20
the main character is completely willing to give up her own personality for love...and forgive her poisonous idiot of a sister. she is an unrealistic and unsympathetic character. basically a caricature of a endlessly selfless, forgiving and loving person to the point the whole novel seems completely pointless. decent narration though.
