Historia
Marty Baron took charge of The Washington Post newsroom in 2013, after nearly a dozen years leading The Boston Globe. Just seven months into his new job, Baron received explosive news: Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, would buy the Post, marking a sudden end to control by the venerated family that had presided over the paper for 80 years. Just over two years later, Donald Trump won the presidency.

Behind the Coverage at the WaPo
Revisado: 12-21-24
Great book. Liev Schreiber, who played Marty Barron in the movie, Spotlight, is an excellent narrator. Barron brings to life the various challenges he faced as editor in chief if a paper in decline and then a paper in the upswing after Bezos purchased it. Adds so much context to events involving Trump’s first term, protests of George Floyd’s murder, insurrection, and conflicts with new generations of reporters who want to change norms. Interesting insights about Bezos, especially relevant since he quashed the WaPo endorsement of VP Harris.

Lots of twists and turns
Revisado: 12-17-24
Many threads of the story combine to ultimately yield the mosaic. I’ve read many Tom Clancy books where breaks in the text typesetting identity new threads. You don’t have the visual cues in the Audible books. General not a problem until the narrator gets to the battle scenes. President Ryan is implementing policy changes without waiting to seek input from newly elected Congress. Very autocratic.

Great book. Saw the movie first. Loved the book more! You get to know Enzo and Denny so much better in the book. The narrator is excellent, although the ending still produces a bucket of tears.

Historia
When, at age forty-six, Nancy Pelosi, mother of five, asked her youngest daughter if she should run for Congress, Alexandra Pelosi answered: “Mother, get a life!” And so Nancy did, and what a life it has been. In The Art of Power, Pelosi describes for the first time what it takes to make history—not only as the first woman to ascend to the most powerful legislative role in our nation, but to pass laws that would save lives and livelihoods, from the emergency rescue of the economy in 2008 to transforming health care.

Great lessons in leadership
Revisado: 08-26-24
Loved this book. Speaker Pelosi has been a courageous and persistent warrior. I think as a female leader she has been held to a double standard. But she fights “for the children”. As she says in the final chapter “I have won nearly all the legislative battles I started.” She knows how to build consensus, does her homework, and is undeterred by those who throw hate. Especially good narrator!!!

Historia
On October 12, 1972, a plane carrying a team of young rugby players crashed into the remote, snow-peaked Andes. Out of the 45 original passengers and crew, only 16 made it off the mountain alive. For 10 excruciating weeks, they suffered deprivations beyond imagining, confronting nature head-on at its most furious and inhospitable. And to survive, these men and women not only had to keep their faith; they had to make an impossible decision: Should they eat the flesh of their dead friends?

Incorrect Pronunciation of Spanish Words!
Revisado: 04-19-24
This is a great story, well-researched and written. But the audio, produced in 2017, uses a narrator with a British accent who butchers the pronunciation of Spanish names and words such as Juan, cordillera, Jose, etc. Yes, the book is in English, but you should pronounce the Spanish words correctly.

Historia
It was 13 October 1972. Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, carrying a team of young rugby players, their families and friends, took off for the very last time. A deadly miscalculation saw F571 crash directly into the Andean mountains to devastating consequences: the body of the plane broke violently into two, its floor torn to smithereens; seats flew out of the air taking passengers with them. In the weeks that followed, the remaining people who were on board - the society of the snow - emerged to fight a dire, gruelling battle for survival.

The narrator’s British accent distracts from the story of the Uruguayans and Chileans that populate the book.

Narrator had a reedy voice that wasn’t pleasant to hear. Sex scenes seemed oddly worded. Like the family characters.

Disappointing
Revisado: 10-23-23
Enjoyed The Firm and was excited to see what happened to Mitch, Abby, and Ray after. There really isn’t much law in this “legal thriller”. A lot of the “action” is lawyers meeting with lawyers, clients, security experts, and politicians. When not in meetings they are making calls on their cell phones. Plot points were highly predictable. Don’t waste an Audible credit.
