Even though someone inflicted a lengthy spoiler on this before I was able tolisten to the book, I still really enjoyed it and felt the suspense.

Historia
Scholars, journalists, and politicians uphold Muslim-ruled medieval Spain - "al-Andalus" - as a multicultural paradise, a place where Muslims, Christians, and Jews lived in harmony. There is only one problem with this widely accepted account: It is a myth. In this groundbreaking book, Northwestern University scholar Darío Fernández-Morera tells the full story of Islamic Spain. As professors, politicians, and pundits continue to celebrate Islamic Spain for its "multiculturalism" and "diversity", Fernández-Morera sets the record straight.

Too Little Content and a Bit Polemic
Revisado: 05-29-17
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Not really. It's not that the book didn't have some useful content - it's just that it could have been said in 25-50 pages. The books was also too polemic for my comfort - I do actually agree with his view of Andalusia (for the same reasons, most of which I already knew) but I am distrustful of books out to prove a premise, even if the premise is correct. I understand he was writing to show why current academia is wrong on this, but I still prefer a truth seeking book, not an "I'm going to prove you wrong" presentation. Although I wouldn't call this an anti-Muslim book, it will be interpreted as such because of the way it is written, since we are in a time and culture where consigning everything Islamic to hell on earth is common.

Excellent Overview
Revisado: 09-22-16
What did you love best about The History of Christian Theology?
The Professor gives a very interesting and helpful overview of Christian theology. I am a Protestant Christian - sort of post-evangelical - with an interest in both Church History and Theology, but I have not been to seminary, and my knowledge, while perhaps a little better than the average Christian's, is very piecemeal. I've been looking for a book or online class like this for a long time. I wasn't sure if I'd get what I wanted from this class, not being familiar with the Professor, but it was exactly what I needed. It has also served as a jump off point for studying original sources. The author does not seem slanted in one direction (or when he is, he says so), so I think different kinds of Christians can benefit from it as well as some non-Christians, who want to understand Christianity more deeply.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. There was too much to think about in each chapter.

Historia
In White Trash, Nancy Isenberg upends assumptions about America's supposedly class-free society. Poor whites were central to the rise of the Republican Party in the early 19th century, and the Civil War itself was fought over class issues nearly as much as it was fought over slavery. Reconstruction pitted poor white trash against newly freed slaves, which factored in the rise of eugenics. These poor were at the heart of New Deal reforms and LBJ's Great Society; they haunt us in reality TV shows like Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and Duck Dynasty.

Not What I Expected
Revisado: 09-03-16
Is there anything you would change about this book?
II guess I expected it to say at least a few good things about so-called "white trash" and to maybe actually get to know some who are currently alive. Instead, it was just a sometimes boring and always dry details written by a scholar who apparently never talked to a cracker in her life. She not only offers nothing positive about the people, she offers no hope for change.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
They aren't supposed to be histories, but if you are interested in better descriptions of "white trash" people of the upper south, read Colin Woodward's American Nations or even Thomas Sewell's "Black Rednecks and White Liberals."
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Kirsten Potter?
Her voice was overly derisive.
Was White Trash worth the listening time?
I'll just say it was very disappointing.

What did you learn from How to Be Sick that you would use in your daily life?
I can't say I learned acceptance of my chronic illness from the book but it did have some helpful ideas.
Any additional comments?
If you are a member of another faith, be forewarned that this book is not merely "inspired" by Buddhism (in a way like DBT therapy was inspired). It is very much how to practice Buddhism. As for me, I have always respected many of Buddha's insights, while at the same time, being a practicing Christian who looks to my own faith in Christ as the final arbiter of all. I was very able to take the parts I think are true from a Christian point of view and discard the others, but not everyone may want to do that.I'm sure many readers will be thinking, "Oh, another hateful or weird Christian who can't accept other faiths." To some extent, that is true, but as I said, I actually like many of the Buddha's teachings. I think they hold a lot of truth. As a Christian, I just believe Jesus is the way off "the wheel." And i am only writing this for people who won't be able to receive the truth that it does contain because of the vehicle it's driving. I don't want them to waste their time and money on something they won't benefit from. And as you can see, I didn't trash the book in my star rating. BTW, I found the narrator almost too soothing, lol.

I loved it!
Revisado: 05-11-16
What made the experience of listening to Medical School for Everyone the most enjoyable?
What I liked best about this course was that it showed me how doctors arrive at a diagnosis - the method of considering, ruling out, etc that is used. It made me realize that a doctor's ability to use of method is just as important as their knowledge of the body, its functions and of disease processes. And as a person who has often felt frustrated with the medical care I've received and the attitudes of many doctors, I believe it will help me both to better present my symptoms and concerns and to understand what the doctor is doing as s/he works toward diagnosis and treatment.

More like a book than lectures
Revisado: 05-11-16
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Probably not. It did have some very interesting parts, but I agree with another reviewer that it got too political. Even though I don't necessarily disagree with most of her political views, I didn't decide to listen to the lectures because I wanted a political commentary on language - I was just interested in the development of American English.
Would you be willing to try another one of Professor Natalie Schilling’s performances?
No. I usually love Great Courses, but this was more like a book than lectures. The professor probably knows her stuff, but neither the content nor her delivery were very inspiring.

"A semi's gone over the embankment." The call wakes Sheriff Joanna Brady in the middle of the night, but what brings her fully alert is the rest of the story. The driver didn't drift off to sleep and cross the center line - he was shot, multiple times, by someone with serious firepower. And when the truck crashed through the guardrail, its payload wound up scattered all over the road - boxes upon boxes of Legos.

short and shallow -and I usually like Jance
Revisado: 11-19-15
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No. Plot short and boring. And to say "not character driven" is an understatement. I realize it was meant to be short. I saw that it was before buying it. But I expected better from Jance, whom I normally like.
What was most disappointing about J. A. Jance’s story?
Not interesting,
What does Karen Ziemba bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Karen Ziemba is always an excellent narrator - her work on this is not a problem.
Was No Honor Among Thieves worth the listening time?
Not really.
Any additional comments?
I normally like both of Jance's female characters - Joanna Brady and Alli, whose last name I cannot recall at the moment. In this book, they meet and it's as if Jance thought this would be enough. But neither were represented in their fullness (their characters here were card boardy) and the plot was something I could have constructed in Jr. High school. I really hate to say that, because as I said, I usually like Jance's books with these characters, but not this time.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Yes - if you are a young girl or if you just want to remember when you were a young girl and read Nancy Drew books.
Would you be willing to try another one of Jessie Birschbach’s performances?
Not unless it was a book I desperately wanted to listen to.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
not that type book
Any additional comments?
I know everyone can't be Laura Linney, who narrated the first few Nancy Drew books, but I disliked this narrator. Her voice is okay to listen to but when she tries to speak "in character" for the various people in the story, it hurts my ears. Her accents are atrocious. She makes the Drew housekeeper, Hannah Gruen, into a southern speaker. Okay, i can't prove that Hannah Gruen wasn't a southerner, but other Stratmeyer books, including the Bobbsey Twins, did have southern speakers and it was obvious. There is no indication in Nancy Drew books that Hannah was southern (or black). They supposedly lived in the midwest and Gruen is a German name. I know, I'm being picky here. But still, all her accents were like caricatures of accents. She needs to work on this and in the meantime, they need to give the job to someone else.

With the victim fighting for his life, the entire squad and the local FBI office are hell-bent on catching the gunman. Bernie, too, wants in on the investigation, despite regulations forbidding eyewitness involvement. But that doesn't mean she's going to sit idly by, especially when her husband, Sergeant Jim Chee, is in charge of finding the shooter. Bernie and Chee discover that a cold case involving his former boss and partner, retired Inspector Joe Leaphorn, may hold the key.

As good as her father; narration could be better
Revisado: 08-16-15
What did you love best about Spider Woman's Daughter?
I listened to both this and Rock with Wings, both by Anne Hillerman. I enjoyed both stories and am so glad to know that this series has been taken over by the late Tony Hillerman's talented daughter. The narrator, though, grows irritating after a while. Okay, I get it that she is trying to imitate the unique way of speaking that some Navajo have. But almost all the Navajo women (not Bernie, so much) have voices that whine and the white women all sound like little old white ladies who are trying too hard to be sweet. It really grates after a while. Story makes it bearable.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Spider Woman's Daughter?
Love the Navajo angles and the Southwest scenery.
