Historia
The city of Celum is not much like Liscor at all. While Erin is surrounded by familiar, human faces, she’s far from home and without her inn. At the same time, a certain ill-tempered Lyonette is squatting in Erin’s inn, and Goblins are on the move. The Goblin Lord’s threat reaches across the entire region, and the Redfang tribe has rallied against him with the Floodplains tribe, although their Chieftains do not agree on some crucial matters. This winter, there is only snow, Goblins, magic, and iambic pentameter.

Yeah, I'll say it here. Alex becomes a brewmaster. That's it; that right there makes this book worth reading. In a desperate side hustle, Alex becomes a legendary brewmaster famed within law enforcement and criminal circles.
Alex does a great job, and voices certain scenes perfectly.
How not to give away more spoilers than brewmaster alex? I can't so, go listen to the tale of the world's newest runewrite brewmaster.

A one star book could be a very dry topic, story, crude, or someone preaching down to the reader. I generally don't have 1-star books. I will just return them and go my own way. My last three were from the same series; I had hit a very dry spot in my listening.
A 2-star story, would be something that was phoned in by a writer that typically has done much better work. I have a couple of reviews from authors that just seemed to phone it in, one most recently from an author that decided to mix current politics into his novel. If I wanted that, I would just watch the news.
A 3-star review is where I really start. It means I enjoyed the book. That I did not have a hard time following it (I have lost a lot of my conversational hearing). That the story kept to a plot, the characters were not static, and the world built was plausible.
A 4-star review is something that I really enjoyed. It puts the author on my map to keep an eye out for. I go through 12-15 books a month. (audible is my primary source of entertainment. ) I will search for the author's works regularly and seek out their stories for future purchases.
A 5-star review, These are not as rare as one would think. These are the books where the characters grow, learn, and act according to their nature. Where the world is not only plausible but believable. Where there are economic systems, businesses, and rules of law that make sense. Where the story is woven, progressed, and told with caring and dedication. These are books, series, authors, and narrators that bring it all in a package.

Murder isn’t uncommon in a big city, but when young women start turning up dead next to mysterious symbols painted in their blood, the police turn to Alex Lockerby to find the killer. Unfortunately, the bloody symbols aren’t any form of magic Alex knows, leaving him precious little to work with and a nagging feeling that he’d better stop this madman before he finishes whatever spell he’s attempting.

It doesn't matter how far you run
Revisado: 01-18-23
Uncle Sam will find you. Especially if you have a skill set that will help them. Alex is drawn, in a small way, into the political machinations of government bureaucrats. It is an entanglement I think just about every American wants to avoid.
Alex Knox is at the top of his game with this book. As I've said in other reviews of this series, some narrators are often hard for me to hear. I have to stop, pause, and hit the back button because they do not speak clearly enough or enunciate enough. Don't lose your hearing, folks; protect it at all costs. Alex Knox is clear as the old sprint telephone pin drop. Yeah, I am that old.
Dan Willis gives us a story that blends political force with personal desires. It's a twisted curve ball that really wasn't what I expected. I typically have a good grasp on mysteries, but this time, Dan snuck it in past me, and I struck out. I sincerely mean that in the most complimentary way.

When a madman starts robbing banks the really old-fashioned way - by blowing holes in them with magical explosives - the police want Alex to catch him before he kills and robs again. Alex splits his time between chasing the homicidal bomber and helping Danny figure out what happened to a dead writer who was basing her book on Broadway’s most famous murder. While the bomber continues to elude Alex, he becomes convinced that the writer was killed by someone who wanted the old murder to remain unsolved.

This book is my favorite of the series so far.
Revisado: 01-18-23
Dan Willis gives you two mysteries in this book; either of them could be a book on its own. He weaves the pair together deftly and with his typical runic noir style. Our understanding of the characters gets deeper, even as Alex scrambles from one issue to the next.
Alex Knox, well, no offense to Vic meant, but he is Alex Lockerby now. I'm sold on the switch. He does an excellent job of bringing the story to life in my mind.
Yet more mystery problems, How do I tell you the story is great without giving spoilers? Well, That's just it; if you are here and started from book one, you've likely seen my other reviews. Dan Willis Arcane Casebook series is simply an excellent listen. They are diverse in stories, plots, capers, and characters. None of these books feels like a previous book. New problems, new cases, and plenty of new ideas.

Alex comes into his own
Revisado: 01-18-23
People say the series takes off, but that has always driven me nuts. I wouldn't be x books in if I didn't already like the series. No, what Mind games does is flesh out the depth of the supporting cast of characters. You begin to have small looks into their lives, their responsibilities, and their driving motivations.
Alex Knox does his usual superb job of bringing you into the story. At times you feel as if you are a ghost standing next to Alex Lockerby as he stands over a clue.
The problem with mystery books is I suck at not typing spoilers, so trust me. Dan Willis has crafted a mystery that will enthrall you for the whole 11 hours and four minutes.

Alex is in a race against time. Dan Willis brings our favorite gumshoe back into our lives. This time, people he knows are in grave danger. (I hate this part of the review because me and my blabber mouth will likely insert spoilers. So if I sound vague, that is why)
Alex Knox does an excellent job building on his suite of voices for this series. By the end of the book, I am hooked on his version of Alex.
Again, how do you write a review about a mystery book's story without giving spoilers? Well, you will just have to trust me, Dan is the man when it comes to giving you everything you need to parse out the case as it progresses. This is a superb listen, give it a go.

How do you solve an impossible puzzle
Revisado: 01-18-23
You work at it. Alex, still reeling from the first case, dives into his second major case. It is one puzzle after the next. It isn't magic that solves the case; it is hard work. This book solidified my interest in the series. The first was great, and this one confirmed that any Alex Lockerby book would be an enjoyable listen.
As to the performance, I was expecting Vic back, but Alex Knox does a superb job. He picks up and runs with the characters. I find him easy to listen to, and his voice acting is excellent.
The story is good, and as not to give things away. Alex has a tough time and relies on all of his bag of tricks to solve this case. Mundane and Runes. It is well crafted and an enjoyable listen.

When a magical plague is released in a Depression-era New York soup kitchen, private detective Alex Lockerby finds himself in a desperate hunt to catch a madman before he can strike again. His investigations lead Alex to a famous thief, a daring heist, and the search for a mythic book of ancient magic, but none of that brings him any closer to finding the man responsible for the massacre. With the police and New York’s Council of Sorcerers desperate to find the culprit, Alex becomes a suspect himself, thanks to his ties to the priest who ran the soup kitchen.

So this is the start of a wild ride
Revisado: 01-18-23
So, Where to start? This is the book that kicks off such a bright and unique world.
Dan does an excellent job weaving a workable and expandable magic system into a world we readers can visualize. Modern conveniences we currently take for granted can be accomplished by low forms of magic or high if you have the coin. Simple things like a rune might keep you warm for a time, or a cold stone might cool your ice box for a month. It's well done.
The limitations of a man just starting out are defined, and like a man starting out, the MC uses his wits, cunning, and grit to do the leg work required for a man to succeed. I think it is this willingness to do the work, to put the effort in, that really sells Alex as the type of lead character I like.
The performance, This is the first book I've heard Vic read. He does a fine job. I've lost most of my conversational hearing, and I had no problems following him as he walked us through this tale. I originally hoped to have Vic back when I started books two and three, but I have to say the new narrator blended right into the story.
As for the story, It's a detective caper mixed with damsels, dames, old men, priests, and a good bit of mystery. I've enjoyed listening to Alex grow over this first book. He resolves the case in good order, and there are plenty of ah, oh, moments to keep most people interested.

A unique begining to a new tale
Revisado: 11-29-22
I've just finished part one of the 4 part series.. It is a very good start to an enjoyable listen.
I am typing this as insit in the deer stand, so please forgive the brevity..
I like the MC and his compatriots. The author does a good job laying out the back story, character growth, and action. The cast of characters weave in and out of a evolving story.
Steve Campbel's narration is excellent. This is the second series i have listened to that Steve's narrated. I appreciate his clarity of pronunciation.. I've lost a lot of conversational hearing. Many narrators are good, but nos as consistent in their clarity.
I will ad more as i finish part 2.
