Historia
On March 11, 2011, a powerful earthquake sent a 120-foot-high tsunami smashing into the coast of northeast Japan. By the time the sea retreated, more than eighteen thousand people had been crushed, burned to death, or drowned. It was Japan’s greatest single loss of life since the atomic bombing of Nagasaki. It set off a national crisis and the meltdown of a nuclear power plant. And even after the immediate emergency had abated, the trauma of the disaster continued to express itself in bizarre and mysterious ways.

Well written from perspectives I hadn’t heard
Revisado: 02-28-25
Loved the book, hadn’t thought about impacts of the tsunami other than Fukushima and had never really considered the impact of the village cultural perspective on disaster

Historia
Following Germania and Danubia, the third installment in Simon Winder's personal history of Europe. In 843 AD, the three surviving grandsons of the great emperor Charlemagne met at Verdun. After years of bitter squabbles over who would inherit the family land, they finally decided to divide the territory and go their separate ways. In a moment of staggering significance, one grandson inherited the area we now know as France, another Germany, and the third received the piece in between: Lotharingia.

One of my favorite books
Revisado: 04-05-23
I love the lighthearted nature of this walk through Lotharingian history as much as I’ve liked it’s predecessors. The narrator does a great job and I’ve listened several times

Historia
In the late fall of 1095, Pope Urban II gave a speech in Clermont, France, and set all of Europe into motion. As many as 150,000 people eventually responded to the call, leaving everything they knew behind to undertake what appeared to be a fool's mission: marching several thousand miles into enemy territory to reconquer Jerusalem for Christendom.

Great Book
Revisado: 11-22-18
Another excellent book from one of my favorite authors. Brownworth does a great job of diving into the minutiae of the events in question without taking away from the enjoyability of the book. Dovetails nicely with his earlier “The Normans” and “Lost to the West”
