Historia
How did a libertine who lacks even the most basic knowledge of the Christian faith win 81 percent of the white evangelical vote in 2016? And why have white evangelicals become a presidential reprobate's staunchest supporters? Jesus and John Wayne is a sweeping account of the last 75 years of white evangelicalism, showing how American evangelicals have worked for decades to replace the Jesus of the Gospels with an idol of rugged masculinity and Christian nationalism.

A Timely and Challenging expose
Revisado: 03-20-21
Kristin Kobe du Mez has given us a gift in tracing the roots and development of 'White Evangelical Masculinity and Militarism" along with it's outgrowth and effects. She is a punchy and writer with a frank style that keeps one's ears pricked, nevertheless she writes soberly. This is history but also a page turner. Read/listen with this in mind (because this is how she has written)--where and why have evangelicals gone outside of the Bible to define, and defend themselves? Then evaluate afresh, 'Is this what Christ has commanded?' du Mez reminds us in her conclusion "Appreciating how this ideology developed over time is essential for those who wish to dismantle it. What was once done might also be undone" (p304). After reading this I only thought she might conclude with the dictum 'Semper Reformanda!"

Historia
Through a nationwide telephone survey of 2,000 people and an additional 200 face-to-face interviews, Michael O. Emerson and Christian Smith probed the grassroots of white evangelical America. They found that despite recent efforts by the movement's leaders to address the problem of racial discrimination, evangelicals themselves seem to be preserving America's racial chasm. In fact, most white evangelicals see no systematic discrimination against blacks. But the authors contend that it is not active racism.

Historia
A dramatic and revelatory account of Joe Torre’s 12 years as manager of the New York Yankees. Joe Torre is the most successful - and most respected - baseball manager of the modern era, steering the Yankees to six American League pennants and four World Series championships. When he left the team in 2007, it was front-page news around the country. Famously diplomatic during his tenure with the Yankees, Torre finally speaks out about what it was like building and managing the dynasty during those 12 glorious and tumultuous years.

More than a memoir!
Revisado: 05-14-20
The books contains great stories from a great manager during some great years with some great teams. But more than that, Torre/Verducci provide insight into sports psychology, philosophy of leadership, transitions in the sport and more! Some quotes from interviews are used more on multiple occasions, but to good effect drawing out different nuances of particular contexts. Kramer's reading is an excellent performance and adds to the read.

excellent finish to a remarkable series!
Revisado: 04-14-20
I loved this book! If you are thinking about this series know this--the story only gets better as you go from book to book. This final instalment is a perfect and moving ending. These are powerful, fun, exciting and creative children's stories. Andrew Peterson's name should be mentioned with the likes of C.S. Lewis and Chesterton.

Andrew Peterson wonderfully weaves profound themes throughout a fun (and at times humorous) and heart-warming (and stirring) story of a family seeking a better country. highest recommendation!
