Historia
Johnnie Rico never really intended to join up—and definitely not the infantry. But now that he’s in the thick of it, trying to get through combat training harder than anything he could have imagined, he knows everyone in his unit is one bad move away from buying the farm in the interstellar war the Terran Federation is waging against the Arachnids. Because everyone in the Mobile Infantry fights. And if the training doesn’t kill you, the Bugs are more than ready to finish the job.

A Disappointment if You Love the Movie
Revisado: 04-23-25
I don’t know if I’m being fair to Heinlein in giving such a unexcited review to Starship Troopers. I think that have i not watched the movie so many times i might have liked the book more. Not that it’d ever be, in my estimation, one of his best works but, honestly, I think the movie is so much more entertaining that this rather “ho hum” tale that perhaps I’d have been better served thinking that the movie represented the book rather than the movie diverging so drastically to deliver an exciting tale.

Still Keeping Me Involved
Revisado: 04-23-25
At the end of the first volume of this series my review stated that despite the somewhat YA aspect of the book i was intrigued enough to continue and that i wondered if this volume would keep me interested enough to go to volume 3. Now i know the answer - i just finished vol 2 and immediately bought vol 3.
My reactions to this volume are exactly the same as to volume 2. At this point i expect that barring something unexpected I’ll end up reading all the volumes of this series and just hope that the final denouement isn’t, like many long series, a disappointment.

Good Enough to Pull Me In
Revisado: 04-23-25
Although the book sometimes overwhelms with the feeling that I’m reading YA fiction it nonetheless has me intrigued enough to get the next volume. The question is of the next volume will equally keep me interested enough to buy the 3rd volume. Putting the YA issue aside the storyline is good, the action mixes well with it’s humor and the characters are at least consistent and their actions (if not their species) believable.

Historia
I have never been favored by the gods. Far from it, thanks to Zeus. Living as a cursed office clerk for the Order of Thieves, I just keep my head down and hope the capricious beings who rule from Olympus won’t notice me. Not an easy feat, given San Francisco is Zeus’ patron city, but I make do. I survive. Until the night I tangle with a different god. The worst god. Hades. For the first time ever, the ruthless, mercurial King of the Underworld has entered the Crucible—the deadly contest the gods hold to determine a new ruler to sit on the throne of Olympus.

A Surprise Ending Saves an Otherwise Mediocre Tale
Revisado: 02-05-25
I almost couldn’t finish this book. Every bit felt like a YA story, albeit with a few very adult moments. Throughout the book almost every situation progressed as expected with the main character being the heroine of a “coming of age” storyline.
Suddenly, however, everything changed with an event that is referenced by what seemed to be a throwaway line much earlier in the book. And, as a result, what seemed to be a book I’d never follow up on has become one that if a sequel comes, and I’m sure one will given the cliffhanger ending, I’ll definitely buy.

Second Try and I Still Can't Continue
Revisado: 01-26-25
I can usually push through any book but this book has me beat. This is the second time I've tried but after 4 hours {2 hours more than my first try) I'm throwing in the towel. I'm not sure why it got the reviews and ratings it did because to me it seemed less like a novel and more like several short stories very loosely tried together. If there was any continuity I really couldn't find it. The prose is flowery without any point. And while the narrator tried his best, even he couldn't breathe life into this book. I gave him 3 stars for trying but overall this book was a waste.

Historia
A Secret Service operative and dedicated survivalist, Special Agent Del Roosevelt had a plan for every world-ending scenario and regularly trained for them all. He was even ready for a date with the hottest woman in his office next Friday. At least he hoped so. But all that training, all those rations, all that prepping? Useless for the apocalypse that actually played out. Del wakes up half-buried in a giant trash pile, missing his thumbs. And, um, covered in red fur. He's stuck in a world of fuzzy monsters, senseless violence, and cult-like crusaders.

Overall a Pretty Funny Read
Revisado: 01-24-25
If it wasn't for the humor in this book my rating would be less positive. At first the book seems to be a typical LitPRG story but thankfully without all the, to me, boring, repetitive, renditions of the character's Stat sheets to which I admit I only slightly pay attention. But by severely limiting these unnecessary parts and by injecting a healthy dose of humor to them, and to the various characters ' actions, statements and thoughts, the book clearly differentiates itself from many others of that genre. As a result, the book brought a lot of laughs throughout and made some, surprisingly, pithy insights into many of the foibles found in today's interpersonal relations.
As the first in what is meant to be a continuing series, Master of Puppets has definitely left me awaiting the next in the series and introduced me to both an author and narrator who I will follow in the future.

Good Story, Well Read
Revisado: 01-09-25
I had to think about this audible book after listening to it over 4 days. First of all, the story is good, having kept my interest throughout - although there were several overlong parts that threatened to drag the whole down. The narrator did a pretty good job breathing life into the population of the book although some of his voices seemed a bit arbitrary and perhaps ill fitting to the character.
Having prefaced my review by the above, I nonetheless recommend this book for its novel premise through to its well done finish. Hopefully there will be more coming in the future for these characters, specifically, and from the author with other well thought out books.

Good Story That Almost Routed Me In
Revisado: 12-31-24
I admit that the title of this review is kind of ambivalent but it totally reflects my reaction to this book. I enjoyed it - I really did, BUT for some reason that I can’t put my finger on I’m just not ready to get Vol. 2. Usually I jump on the next book of a series, plowing through most, if not all, of the books making up the total series. In fact, I opened up Audible fully intending to buy Unbound but something stayed my hand. I’m not sure why that happened and I’m sure that sooner or later I will continue, but for whatever reason I’m going on to something different instead.
I definitely think you should give Ascendant a read. It’s truly good. Perhaps you’ll react differently regarding when to continue the series.

There’s just something engrossing about this series. After listening to the first 4 volumes, each one immediately after the prior, I’m starting the 5th. A wonderful mix of action, humor and fantastical Sci-Fi.

On its Way Down
Revisado: 11-09-24
As what happens to so many series when their books multiply seemingly with the main purpose being the sale of more books, this series seems to be decreasing in quality as the number of words increases. It almost seems to be an inverse proportion.
I had really looked forward to this iteration of the “Welcome to the Multiverse” series. Sadly, the quality of the storytelling is on a definite downward slope. Because this book is still better than average I’ll buy “Contention” the next book in the series - but I hope that this book’s slippage is an aberration. Otherwise the next will be my last.
