Simon Prebble’s performance is, as usual, masterful, to complement Peter Lovesey’s clever writing style and portrayal of Bath’s favorite detective. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys either Prebble or Lovesey.

The storyline was unusual, unpredictable, and believable, with a satisfying conclusion. The main character is likewise believable and demonstrates development as the book unfolds. I appreciate Dick Francis’ humor and the narrator’s ability to convey it subtly.

This installment showed developments in the main character’s own journey as a person, which I enjoyed. The plot was more complex than in the two previous books - perhaps overly complex in parts, which made the plot seem unnecessarily slow to unfold in places. It casts religious institutions in a negative, self-serving light, which may be an accurate portrayal of some churches, yet I dislike the author also conveying a negative image of faith itself. Overall, although this was a necessary book in the series for completion’s sake, it was not my favorite.

In the Frame was enjoyable to read and I recommend it to anyone who is drawn to unusual mysteries. The prose and dialogue are well-written, and the main characters are likable. At times I needed to re-listen to portions to I understood where the characters were and which particular antagonist was in pursuit. Unlike most narrators, Ralph Cosham does not attempt to change voices radically for female characters, which makes the flow of the story smoother and easier on the ears. Finally, during listening I gleaned odd bits of information about Australian and New Zealand culture.

Both the composition and delivery of this story are truly exceptional. Jack Carr continues the skillful narrative of the previous novel, while Ray Porter masterfully brings each character to life. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys action and thrill with a substantive plot. Some scenes may be disturbing, yet in a way that contributes to the plot and characters rather than in a contrived, gory or gratuitous way. I look forward to the next in the series.

John McWhorter provides a more interesting, seldom discussed history of the English language and the Germanic languages in general. Unlike other histories of English, which mostly describe etymological shifts and developments in English, McWhorter investigates causes. He examines how groups of language speakers through history have not only brought new words to English, but have given its underlying grammar, its foundation, quirks that make it strange and unique.
McWhorter’s style is thorough without being pedantic; and filled with fresh imagery and humor. In addition, he narrates his own work beautifully - a rare combination in the world of audiobooks.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and will undoubtedly listen to it again, as well as seek other books from McWhorter.

The author takes an unexpectedly fresh, darkly humorous view on plagues and widespread maladies in the last two millennia; their sufferers; as well as notable (and sometimes infamous) figures connected to them. I had expected an academic foray into germs, bacteria, etc., but was pleasantly surprised to hear fascinating historical anecdotes and facts, sarcasm, humor, empathy, and a wide range of expressive prose. The narrator's voice has just the right rhythm and tone for this book. I recommend it to anyone interested in history and plagues who would like a memorable way to thread eras together. The author's own opinions are apparent throughout the text, yet she treats historical subjects fairly, for the most part.
