Beautiful and Complex
Revisado: 01-06-25
The Garden of Evening Mists is beautiful and complicated. It is one of the best books I've read in the last few years. It is both heartbreaking and uplifting.

Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

Great story but too long
Revisado: 07-15-24
Great story but it tended to drag at times -detracting from the narrative of an existential journey. It was as if the author lost his place and had to regroup. Nonetheless, the book was entertaining-but not spiritually impactful as some reviews suggest.

Historia
This is the way the world ends, for the last time. The season of endings grows darker, as civilization fades into the long cold night. Essun - once Damaya, once Syenite, now avenger - has found shelter, but not her daughter. Instead there is Alabaster Tenring, destroyer of the world, with a request. But if Essun does what he asks, it would seal the fate of the Stillness forever. Far away, her daughter Nassun is growing in power - and her choices will break the world.

A waste of time
Revisado: 04-28-24
Sadly, 'The Obelisk Gate' was a sleeper and a waste of time. It does nothing to add to the overall story and trilogy except perhaps deeper insight into several of the characters.

Historia
Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

A Waste of Time and Boring
Revisado: 03-15-24
The Witching Hour is, without a doubt, not worth the effort. The unflaggingly turgid prose peppered with absurd conversations lending nothing to the story, plot, or formation of a charater(s). To say I struggled to get through this book is an understatement.
I skipped entire sections, even a chapter or two to see if I would feel the loss. I then went back to read what I skipped to see if there were any gains in appreciation of the story line; nope! If the reader can leave out entire sections and chapters and feel no loss, there must be something amiss.
Having read other books by Ann Rice, I purchased the entire trilogy - thinking it would be an enjoyable journey. Sadly, I am mistaken. I sincerely doubt I will ever turn a page in the 2nd or 3rd book. The 1st book did me in. Based on the reviews of books 2 and 3 (Lasher and Taltos) these stories are, in many reviews, worse.
I have to wonder whether there was an editor or maybe they ran off after a few chapters. What was the author and the editor(s) thinking? If you enjoy Ann Rice and read this book or trilogy, I can safely say you may never read another of the author’s books.
Let me close by saying that during the reading of the ‘Witching Hour’ I picked up ‘Finnegans Wake’ that has the reputation as one of the most difficult works of fiction in the Western canon. I can not say that ‘Finnegans Wake’ was easier to read but it was MUCH more interesting. And there you have it.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.
