Historia
When I first meet Sophie, she seems like any normal loving mother, trying desperately to help her teenage daughter. That’s where I come in. The perfect tutor to get Katie’s life back on track. I connect instantly with Katie, and Sophie’s thoughtful husband Scott. But Sophie’s dark eyes are full of jealousy when I talk to Scott or share a smile with Katie. I know I’m helping her daughter, whatever she thinks.

Another knock out!
Revisado: 12-18-24
I love Dalgliesh’s stories and this one didn’t let me down. While his Hidden Norfolk- Tom Janssen series remains my favorite, this was an excellent mystery. The narrator did a great job.

Fantastic Ending!
Revisado: 12-11-24
What a great book, and although I’m heartbroken that this is the final Department Q book, the ending was so perfect.
Having a new narrator step in is always jarring, but Steven Pacey was more than up to the job.
Outstanding, five stars across the board!

Historia
A murder victim dumped at the dead end of a lonely country road, face and hands obliterated by a shotgun blast, is not the way sheriff’s detective Nick Fourcade wants to start his week. His only lead takes him to the family of a hometown hero suddenly gone missing. Marc Mercier left his home for a weekend hunting trip and hasn’t been seen since.

Outstanding character development
Revisado: 11-29-24
Another knockout from Tami Hoag. What took this one to another level for me, was the character of B’Lynn Fontenot, the desperate mother, trying to get the police to take her seriously- that her son is missing and in trouble. The trouble is, that he’s an opiate addict with a record.
Tami Hoag has written the most accurate, compassionate depiction of what it’s really like to have a child lost to long term addiction.
The mystery for Nick Fourcade and Annie Broussard had just enough twists and turns.
My only quibble is with the narrator’s sad attempt at doing Nick’s Louisiana accent. It’s…not good.

Uneven
Revisado: 11-01-24
This is my second Matt Ballard book and I’m sorry to only be able to give it 3 stars.
Ellis has, in this, and the first book, a great story. I can forgive much if the story is worthwhile. I may even read another.
However, sigh…the problems. The biggest is the dialogue. The dialogue is unbelievable. Painfully so. Men, cops? talking like Hallmark writers imagine English posh people speak. It’s so bad.
Top that dialogue off with some overwrought acting in the narration and the only thing that saves these two books is the actual story. She writes some cool murder mysteries.

I wish I could rate this higher
Revisado: 08-06-24
I enjoy Kate Morton, and overall, I enjoyed this story. It had an entertaining mystery. What it sorely lacked was a skilled editor. Has Morton reached Steven King level of hubris that they can just go on and on with no brakes?
At 21 hours and 24 minutes, it was just too long. There wasn’t enough charm or story to warrant it going on and on and on….and on. Frankly, I would have loved this book, and it would have been a more taut mystery if there had been some skilled editing.

Historia
Deborah Harkness first introduced the world to Diana Bishop, an Oxford scholar and witch, and vampire geneticist Matthew de Clermont in A Discovery of Witches. Drawn to each other despite long-standing taboos, these two otherworldly beings found themselves at the center of a battle for a lost, enchanted manuscript known as Ashmole 782. Since then, they have fallen in love, traveled to Elizabethan England, dissolved the Covenant between the three species, and awoken the dark powers within Diana’s family line.

BORING!
Revisado: 07-25-24
The first 3/4s of the book were utterly boring. Just blahblahblah of insipid meandering blather. I had to speed up the narration pace to get through it. In the last quarter of the book, we FINALLY get to a plot, only for it to end on a cliffhanger, setting up a newer series involving the children.
If I didn’t love the prior series so much, I wouldn’t have bothered finishing this book. I probably will give the next book shot, but I fear that Ms. Harkness has exhausted this series and is just rehashing old ground to sell books. I really hope I’m wrong. Super disappointed in this one.

Historia
Misanthropic psychologist Dr. Grace Park is placed on the Deucalion, a survey ship headed to an icy planet in an unexplored galaxy. Her purpose is to observe the thirteen human crew members aboard the ship - all specialists in their own fields - as they assess the colonization potential of the planet, Eos. But frictions develop as Park befriends the androids of the ship, preferring their company over the baffling complexity of humans, while the rest of the crew treats them with suspicion and even outright hostility.

Most irritating main character. I was so glad when this story was over. I liked the author’s writing style, but this character…This is my first Ruth Ware book. Are all her main characters so neurotic and stupid? Good narrator though.
