Historia
If it weren’t for Emma Johnson, Caryn Johnson would have never become Whoopi Goldberg. Emma gave her children the loving care and wisdom they needed to succeed in life, always encouraging them to be true to themselves. When Whoopi lost her mother in 2010—and then her older brother, Clyde, five years later—she felt deeply alone; the only people who truly knew her were gone. Emma raised her children not just to survive, but to thrive. In this intimate and heartfelt memoir, Whoopi shares many of the deeply personal stories of their lives together for the first time.

For anyone who has or might yet live through grief
Revisado: 09-30-24
This is Whoopi’s story, not a self-help book, so you have to kinda at least like her a little bit. You get to know her a lot as she tells her story with an eye for the life lessons that she’s learned about kindness, understanding differences, learning from bad decisions, appreciating life (the good and the bad), and dealing with loss. EVERYONE should listen to chapter 14!

Historia
Stop me if you’re heard this one: Veteran comic Chauncy and social-media star José are the very definition of “opposites attract”. But sparks, and jokes, fly after the two of them embark upon a beautiful romance for the ages...two vastly different ages. Starring Drew Droege and Gabe Gonzalez, The Comedians is a modern queer love story, told through individual stand-up acts. We hear the ups and downs of their journey—from falling hard to failing harder than a botched punchline—in this hilariously relatable play about love, loss, and, above all, "The Laugh".

Poignant Drama Unfolds on Stand-Up Comedy Stage
- De Philip D. Hughes-Luing en 09-18-22
Clever idea but hard to understand at times and I didn’t like the end
Revisado: 02-14-23
Equal parts funny and cringey. Sometimes I would rewind 3-4 times and still have no idea what was said. Don’t listen with kids in the car.

Historia
For Titus and his friends, it started out like any ordinary trip to the moon - a chance to party during spring break and play with some stupid low-grav at the Ricochet Lounge. But that was before the crazy hacker caused all their feeds to malfunction, sending them to the hospital to lie around with nothing inside their heads for days. And it was before Titus met Violet, a beautiful, brainy teenage girl who has decided to fight the feed and its omnipresent ability to categorize human thoughts and desires.

Recommended in 8th grade textbook but can’t give to students due to language
Revisado: 10-19-22
Cool concept for a story set in the not-too-distant future where internet hardware is installed right into people’s heads…with commentary on how the constant advertising feeds a consumption mindset that impacts society, our planet, and individuals when it goes terribly wrong. Lots of typical teenage cursing that I don’t feel comfortable giving to my middle school students, though.

Historia
A hilarious and emotional personal account of the life, times, mistakes, and crippling codependence of comedian, producer, director, actress, and writer Whitney Cummings. Full of intellect, pathos, and profundity, I'm Fine...and Other Lies is, in Whitney's words, her first book, which means her last date. With her signature incendiary edge and self-deprecation, Whitney comes clean about what has shaped her into the trailblazing comic that she is today.

Who knew you could learn so much from a lanky, insecure comedian who makes dick jokes?
Revisado: 09-10-22
I am impressed by Whitney Cummings’ honesty and insight as she reveals the struggles that have let her to some important truths. Though my struggles have been somewhat different from hers, they have led me to some similar conclusions. Funny and raw and at times a bit vulgar, this book may not be for the most pristine among us, but if, like Whitney, you’re willing to just shut up for a minute and admit that you might not know everything, she just my teach you a thing or two that she’s learned from a lot of expensive therapy and recovery efforts.

Charity may have mad math skills and a near-perfect memory, but with a mouth that can’t speak and a body that jumps, rocks, and howls unpredictably, most people incorrectly assume she cannot learn. Charity’s brain works differently from most people’s because of her autism, but she’s still funny, determined, and kind. So why do people treat her like a disease or ignore her like she’s invisible?

A Must-read for parents and teachers
Revisado: 07-03-22
This is a must-read for any parent or teacher who has any contact at all with non-neurotypical children: “complete acceptance from the first minute” of each one’s differences should be our goal, and this book illustrates why and provides examples and many (too many) non-examples, ranging from cringey to heart-breaking. It may even help with my own anxiety (Breathe in joy. Breathe out fear).I loved the voices that some reviewers had issues with (esp. the 13-year-old narrator) but I did speed it up to 1.5x. Highly recommend.

Historia
Dale Maharidge’s father, like many World War II veterans, never talked about “the good war”. There was just one clue to his dad’s experience as a US Marine - a portrait with a close friend that hung permanently in their home. In The Dead Drink First, Dale, now a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, recounts his 18-year quest to find and repatriate the missing remains of his dad’s buddy, Herman Walter Mulligan, 73 years after he was killed in action.

Real, raw and reverent
Revisado: 11-29-21
The chronology of a journalist’s quest to unpack the burdens his father carried away from WWII that negatively impacted on their little family eventually led to some healing for himself and his brother with the help of many, many friends. I enjoyed the footage from recorded conversations that spanned over a decade though some were noisy and difficult to understand.

I'm not sure why other reviewers' had such a big problem with the narrator – I thought he was fine. The story, though, is great! Highly recommended for anyone who's ever loved and lost a dog. if you liked A Dog's Purpose, then you'll love this, too!
