CLIFFHANGER ENDING!
Revisado: 08-10-21
Wow, the action was amazing. I didn't want it to end, but then it did so suddenly! I love how the female heroines are both strong and vulnerable, intelligent but sometimes hasty, humble and prideful, but overall amazing characters. I also really appreciate that the male characters are not potrayed as weak imbeciles as seems so often the case these days.

Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

Historia
In the final book of the Wizard for Hire trilogy, Ozzy and his friend (and Rin’s daughter), Sigi, are in danger. They are still being hunted by Ray, the power-mad villain who will stop at nothing to find the formula to the mind-controlling discipline serum - one that Ozzy’s parents created and injected into him. Knowing the dangers that lie ahead, Rin introduces Ozzy to four more friends who also claim magical, wizard-like abilities. Again, Ozzy has no reason to believe that magic exists or that Rin’s eccentric friends can help.

Satisfying Ending!
Revisado: 01-23-21
Don't worry, real magic saves the day at the end. And the check boxes all make sense. The voices are very distinct and well done, and the narrator didn't get on my nerves as much this time with the yelling sections. An absolutely fun and WONDER-full book series!

Historia
Fourteen-year-old Ozzy lives near Portland, Oregon, and is desperate for help. His scientist parents have been kidnapped after discovering a formula that enables mind control. Their work was so top secret that Ozzy is afraid to go to the police, but without help, he fears he'll never find his parents. Then he stumbles across a classified ad in the local newspaper that says "Wizard for Hire. Call 555-SPEL." Ozzy has read about wizards in books like Harry Potter, but wizards couldn't exist today, could they? After Ozzy meets the wizard Labyrinth - a.k.a. Rin - he's even more skeptical.

Okay writing, but screaming narration bugged me
Revisado: 12-17-20
This was a little hard for me to get into, but finally after a couple of hours I started to anticipate each new chapter.
It was interesting how the book keeps you wondering throughout the book whether or not Ren is really a wizard or just a kindly, unbalanced old man taking advantage of circumstances and calling it magic in a con artist sort of way.
However, there is one point at the end where antagonist shouts "You Humans!". Suddenly it all clicks together and makes you really want to read the sequel!
I do appreciate the narrator's enthusiasm, but really dislike the screaming. That, or maybe a lot of the YA books he has narrated indicates a lot of screaming. The other thing, though, is that the voices he uses for Ozzie, Siggie, Clark, Charles, and Ren sound so much like his characters in another author's series that it was easy for me to get confused as to which book I was listening to.

History abounds with examples of government officials making decisions, well-intentioned or otherwise, that harm others. Unfortunately, these unintended consequences are never anticipated, and rarely considered once they occur. As the Tuttle Twins find in their latest adventure, central planning can ruin people's lives.

Great for kids and grown ups
Revisado: 05-27-20
Though the reading was slower to appeal to younger children, the story was well written and enjoyable. It's also great for short attention spans - about 20 min long. This book provides a good introduction to principles of individualism vs collectivism, unintended consequences, and eminent domain as shared by economist F.A. Hayek in his classic "Road to Serfdom".

Most kids would do anything to pass the Iron Trial. Not Callum Hunt. He wants to fail. All his life, Call has been warned by his father to stay away from magic. If he succeeds at the Iron Trial and is admitted into the Magisterium, he is sure it can only mean bad things for him. So he tries his best to do his worst - and fails at failing. Now the Magisterium awaits him. It's a place that's both sensational and sinister, with dark ties to his past and a twisty path to his future.

Thought provoking and delightful
Revisado: 01-27-20
My 12 year-old son asked me to read this series and I'm glad Audible had it on audiobook. Yes, there are similarities to the Harry Potter Series - young, disadvantaged boy attending magic school, trio of first years becoming friends, bad guy was "defeated" in a past war but went into hiding, bad guy fears death and tries to use dark magic to overcome it, snarky kid bullies main character, top magic professor takes an interest in main character, etc.
But there are so many original elements that are refreshing and make this a very interesting and promising series. For example, I love the vivid descriptions of the Magisterium inside the mountain, bringing back memories of school field trips to caves with stalagmites and sulphur pools and giant sparkling crystals. I try to imagine how the "elementals" look, along with the creepy swirling eyes of the chaos born characters. Also, the main character is not the "main hero apparent", making me curious to see how both characters will develop in future sequels.
An interesting dilemma concerning the nature of the soul is also introduced in this novel that will lead to great conversations with my son. Is our very nature pre-determined by the choices of others long before we have consciousness of those choices? Such actions affect us to be sure, but what about the value of our own choices? Collum chooses to accept the invitation to attend the Magisterium, despite his father's fears and years of his negative, biased comments. Col makes friends, chooses to disobey the rules in some cases and in others chooses to respect the rules, all with varying consequences. Does this mean he has to accept the "inevitable" conclusion that is presented to him at the end of the book? Is life ever so completely black and white?
Kudos to the authors for a delightful debut!

Does nature really make us feel better? The 3-Day Effect takes a look at the science behind why being in the wild can make us happier, healthier, and more creative. Whether it’s rafting down Utah’s Green River, hiking in Utah’s wilderness, or walking through Rock Creek Park in Washington, DC, scientists are finding that the more exposure humans have to nature, the more we can benefit from reduced anxiety, enhanced creativity, and overall well-being.

Revisado: 07-22-19
This looks on the cover like a fun book that your kids might enjoy, but the language and references to sexual body parts made me turn it off before I got through the first chapter. Disappointed with audible for doing this one and for making it look kid friendly when it is totally not.

Darling coming-of-age / friendship bonding story!
Revisado: 06-13-19
Great narration and fun story. I kept thinking I would love to have my daughter read this! Most preteen girls will relate with the feelings of inadequacy and jealousy discussed here. The ending is very satisfying, yet makes you want to listen to the sequels. My only complaint - it was over too quickly!
