Leslie Jones is a treasure of a human. She is raw and wise and brave and kind. So grateful for her voice and her story. Congratulations, Leslie!

Great information that is well packaged and excellently delivered. A lesser storyteller would have lost me to the odd and disjointed acoustics.

I've got no issue with humanizing icons, but after listening to this compilation of information using claimed journalistic techniques, I was left with the impression that this was an effort in dehumanization. A warts-and-all attempt that devolved into an all-the-warts approach.

There is good and interesting research in this book; much of it available elsewhere, though not compiled into a narrative.

The worst stuff is wildly distasteful. The dog whistle that Stan Lee turned his back on the faith of his father; that he wasn't a good enough Jew, he married a gentile, he was cremated, etc. It's a bridge too far and reeks of personal orthadoxy. This is more pervasive in the earlier biographical chapters, but is sprinkled throughout. Bad form, sir.

The reader does a serviceable job of pacing out the material in tones from slightly left of neutral to J. Jonah Jameson levels of quirky vitriol. I think he did a good job interpreting the source material.

Overall, this book feels less an unveiling of an icon and more like elder abuse.

Just like the man himself, this book is measured & insightful. It was so refreshing to hear an intellectual and compassionate voice in the face of impossibly difficult decisions. Reminds me of what I value in leadership. Here’s to hoping for more of this in our future.

I suppose this is in the vein as Gone Girl, but the multiple narrators and dates got muddled quickly. Once the mystery begins, it's fine.

The performances were good. Distinct and good male voices put on by the female performers. Overall pleasing to listen to.

There's a chapter near the beginning of this memoir that is Norm laying himself bare for the reader. The chapter has two words in it, "I forget," and is, in context, a gut punch that, while it doesn't exactly set the tone for the rest of the book, is unforgettable and may be the truest throw away in the non-fiction section.

Based on a True Story is Norm's recollection told through an absurd filter, one that should be factory standard for the celebrity memoir genre. It's just plain fun and funny.

Is it better to hear how Norm's agent got him an audition with SNL, or how he bribed Lorne Michaels with a steady supply of government-grade liquid morphine? Better to hear the mea culpa of a gambling addiction, or a tale of squandering a million dollar Vegas credit only to drive to the Salton Sea to make a deal with a devil a second time.

Norm Macdonald is very well read. This isn't your everyday comedy memoir. And as the reader for this audio book, his delivery is perfect and nuanced. When he's reading the top 25 jokes from Weekend Update from all time (24 of which are credited to him) there's an air about his voice, and it's not gloating - it's catharsis.

I've long been hesitant of starting this series due to the number of volumes that had already come out when I learned of it. I finally took the leap with the audio book and I'm glad I did. The story is masterful and the performance is pleasant and approachable. A poor performance can wreck a good story, fortunately for me, George Guidall excelled. The character performances were distinct and believable; King's surprisingly lush sentences were ladled on like gravy.

It's great science fiction/fantasy. The story seems a bit muddled at times, but that's a minor qualm.

I am already planning a listen to the next three volumes.

Would you listen to The Buried Giant again? Why?

Definitely. Partly to revisit the characters and get some of the nuance of the story that I'm sure I missed the first go around - mostly for Horovitch.

What did you like best about this story?

It's constant pace. It's doesn't have to hit you in the face. Axl and Beatrice are on a journey, the subtext of the journey is delivered subtly and on the way. It's not flight butressed by essays, but a nice walk; a full and satisfying walk.

What about David Horovitch’s performance did you like?

He's a master. If you want to learn about yourself if you're the kind of person who'd like audiobooks, start with this; If you don't, you won't. It doesn't get better than this. The character changes are effortless and real. I've started to search for books to try not by author, but by clicking on this narrator.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Every ounce of dialog from Axl. Start to finish.
