fun, but light in the science department.
Revisado: 05-06-24
I felt like the character arches were a bit artificial feeling, and the science fiction was communicated for maybe a young adult level. this surprised be because I learned of the series from a self-discribed scify geek. This book feels like scify from decades ago. It almost feels like a softcore porn script that bloomed into an actual book. I can almost hear the author trying to figure out how to get the strongest male possible with the most elegant female possible.
but don't get me wrong, it was still fun and I'm glad to have read it. it just was not the meaty scify I was hoping for.

masterful.
Revisado: 11-26-23
The caty ladies took a bit of getting through for me, but added the necessary lightness to what would have been a heavy book. I love the way the story was woven. The darker side of relationships laid bare, the hidden wounds, the possibility of healing, the unexpected turns.

Historia
Imperial Intelligence couldn't find them, the Imperial Fleet couldn't catch them, and local defenses couldn't stop them. It seemed the planet-wrecking pirates were invincible. But they made a big mistake when they raided ex-commando leader Alicia DeVries' quiet home/work, tortured and murdered her family, and then left her for dead. Alicia decided to turn "pirate" herself, and stole a cutting-edge AI ship from the empire to start her vendetta. Her fellow veterans think she's gone crazy, the Imperial Fleet has shoot-on-sight orders. And, of course, the pirates want her dead, too.

good not great
Revisado: 08-02-22
good reading. I liked the voices and the emotion. The plot was fun, but a bit predictable. I do like harder sci-fi, but this will do. I feel like it was written half as an homage to our current military, and a fantasy as to what that military could be with future tech. Not a clear vision... but fun.

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

such fun for a science nerd.

science nerds are hard to please, so I'm sure that some people will pick apart aspects, but super fun. non-science nerds may be bored by some of the problem solving.

Historia
God is change. That is the central truth of the Earthseed movement, whose unlikely prophet is 18-year-old Lauren Olamina. The young woman's diary entries tell the story of her life amid a violent 21st-century hell of walled neighborhoods and drug-crazed pyromaniacs - and reveal her evolving Earthseed philosophy. Against a backdrop of horror emerges a message of hope: if we are willing to embrace divine change, we will survive to fulfill our destiny among the stars.

very dark in places. better done than most of the postal apocalyptic books. addresses in part: leaving religion, cult-think, class, race, and the inability of politics to react well.

Historia
Environmental devastation and economic chaos have turned America into a land of horrifying depravity. Assault, theft, sexual abuse, slavery, and murder are commonplace. And a zealous, bigoted tyrant has won his way into the White House. Directly opposed is Lauren Olamina, founder of Earthseed - a new faith that teaches "God Is Change". Persecuted for "heathen" beliefs as much as for having a Black female leader, Earthseed's followers face a life-and-death struggle to preserve their vision.

Powerful, dark sequel that stands on its own
- De David en 09-27-11
powerful, if a little naive.
Revisado: 07-22-20
I really enjoyed this book. It is overtly political. speaks to fundamentalism, the short sighted side of conservative politics, cults, trust, racism, and much more. Very dark in places, but worth it. if you like Trump/Pence, this will chanlange you. I found the growth curve of the AC more realistic than Earth Seed... even though I know Earth Seed has similarities to Mormons, Scientology, and others.

competing story that really made me think
Revisado: 07-12-20
really made me thing about how I spend my time, and who I give my power to... yes, it is a little heavy in the lefty politics, but presented in a way that illustrates some consequences, not just preaching at you. Complex characters that are easy to enjoy watching.

I know Jason would have mixed things to say about hearing me say it but: He does not sound like a politician. today in 2019, we need this message even more. it it time to pull together, and step outside the wire because that is what needs to be done.
