Historia
The hardscrabble folks of Troublesome Creek have to scrap for everything - everything except books, that is. Thanks to Roosevelt's Kentucky Pack Horse Library Project, Troublesome's got its very own traveling librarian, Cussy Mary Carter. Cussy's not only a book woman, however, she's also the last of her kind, her skin a shade of blue unlike most anyone else. Not everyone is keen on Cussy's family or the Library Project, and a Blue is often blamed for any whiff of trouble.

Riveting and Enlightening
Revisado: 03-06-25
Having many relatives harkening from antidiluvial (West) Virginia, I had a natural curiosity concerning folks from this area. What a pleasant surprise to find such an even-handed and well-researched effort! Supremely well-written and engrossing, with a performance eloquent in its simplicity, I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical novels based on actual events. This would make an excellent movie!

A Masterpiece
Revisado: 10-16-24
Weaving a masterful story through many, many points of view, all amazingly well performed (male and female alike), the author captures you quickly and draws you along with suspense and humor. Just as you think the story is over, up pops another point of view and it gallops along in another direction. Clear your calendar or dont start until you have the time to become enmeshed.

In Need of a Good Editor
Revisado: 09-23-24
If you like well-read, old-fashioned melodramat, drawn out with shameless padding and sentimentality, prepare to spend a week listening to this set of... was it seven? books. I lost patience with the hapless heroine after a while and with the author after about the fourth book. Her love interest was so full of judgements without inquiry that I could see this story but a version of Pride and Prejudice, Emma and Sense and Sensibility with Northinger Abbey thrown in for good measure. The heroine was hapless and helpless in an extremely irritating repetition of mishaps that I found my eyes rolling as my mind begged the author to "get on with it!"

"Droll and Bombastic"
Revisado: 08-19-24
If you want to read an apt review of this book, just follow the habit of some readers and turn to the last chapter in which a review of one of the clerks' literary efforts is made by a newspaper editor. The performance is engrossing as far as the men's parts are concerned but whiney when it comes to the women. perhaps this was in order to accomplish the Bombastic. If so, it was effective.

Such Courage
Revisado: 08-09-24
Listening to this series of vinettes revealing old New York, I was enthralled and impressed with the courage and perception it must have taken to show that society to itself in what has to be unsettling and sometimes shocking ways. The discontent of the author is evident, which drew my pity but the skill with which her insights were expressed and then performed made this book week worth my time and, I hope, yours.

ATouching Story
Revisado: 07-12-24
While this narrator could not be said to have dulcet tones, he was believable as a man who had achieved 100 years. I was surprised to discover that his old man voice and very deliberate, slow delivery were actually his own. Being based on a true story, makes this a more interesting tale, especially with the perspective of dust bowl exigencies. Towards the end it seemed as though there were some fillers as far as overdrawn t descriptions went but it is worth a listen all the same. For die hard animal lovers it might be even more appreciated.

Historia
The history of colonial America is a story of extraordinary scope, with Europeans, Africans, and the native peoples of North America interacting in a drama of settlement and conflict that lasted nearly three centuries. Go back in time and relive this epic story in 36 spellbinding lectures. While concentrating on British North America, Professor Allison also covers developments in the colonial outposts of Spain, France, the Netherlands, and the all-important British possessions in the West Indies, which were the source of the most lucrative crop in the New World - sugar - and the reason for the enormous growth in the slave trade.

Fascinating Content

Well-organized and well-written lectures. My only annoyance was the seemingly affected very drawn out drawl of the professor much akin to those used in satires of the so-called "upper crust" of England.

Eunsun Kim was born in North Korea, one of the most secretive and oppressive countries in the modern world. As a child, Eunsun loved her country...despite her school field trips to public executions, daily self-criticism sessions, and the increasing gnaw of hunger as the countrywide famine escalated. By the time she was 11 years old, Eunsun's father and grandparents had died of starvation, and Eunsun too was in danger of starving. Finally her mother decided to escape North Korea with Eunsun and her sister.

A Courageous Account
Revisado: 04-16-24
It is good to learn from someone who actually lived in North Korea. The horrors of this dictatorship are so carefully guarded that getting the truth is a rare and hard-won prize. Well-narrated and quick-moving, I found it riveting.
