Historia
On the eve of Marcus Cicero's inauguration as consul of Rome, the grisly death of a boy sends ripples of fear through a city already wracked by civil unrest, crime, and debauchery of every kind. Felled by a hammer, his throat slit and his organs removed, the young slave appears to have been offered as a human sacrifice, forbidden as an abomination in the Roman Republic. For Cicero, the ill forebodings of this hideous murder only increase his frustrations and the dangers he already faces as Rome's leader.

A lesson for today
Revisado: 07-05-23
Great historical fiction by a master of the genre, who puts to life Ancient Rome at its inflection from republic to dictatorship.
The struggles of Cicero to try to maintain the institution of the Roman form of democracy while advancing his own fortunes surrounded by immensely wealthy and corrupt individuals are compelling examples of the timeless incongruity of power and integrity.

Brilliant composition and presentation of a pivotal phase of Roman politics seen through the eyes of a slave serving the model of lawyer/statesmen seen to the present day

Historia
With compassion and candor, leading neurosurgeon Henry Marsh reveals the fierce joy of operating, the profoundly moving triumphs, the harrowing disasters, the haunting regrets, and the moments of black humor that characterize a brain surgeon's life. If you believe that brain surgery is a precise and exquisite craft, practiced by calm and detached surgeons, this gripping, brutally honest account will make you think again.

Contemporary Neurosurgery: a reality check
Revisado: 02-02-19
Amazingly frank compilation of insights by a leading Neurosurgeon of our times. ‘There are no miracles in brain surgery’ is one of the many revelations well known within the medical community, but not in keeping with public’s expectations. And nowhere is the absurd hopelessness of a nationalized health system unmasked more clearly than in this first book of Mr Marsh. Questions of humanity, meaning of life, what price for dignity and mere survival are presented from the unique perspective of a senior Neurosurgeon at the tail end of his career. While his thoughts may disappoint some, the reality presented will hopefully inspire development of a more healthcare delivery approach beyond algorithms and formulas.

View from within the literary world
Revisado: 08-06-17
Mr Grisham is a truly gifted story teller who can create characters and atmospheric settings with few and effectively chosen words. The deep dive into the world of writers, along with their values and insecurities, is pretty compelling - as are the reflections on the valuation of the literary world by our society. The conclusion of the story is a bit disappointing and shallow- which makes this more of a fun summer read rather than a memorable story.

Historia
Down the road from a working-class British pub, along the brick wall of a narrow alley, if the conditions are exactly right, you'll find the entrance to Slade House. A stranger will greet you by name and invite you inside. At first, you won't want to leave. Later, you'll find that you can't. Every nine years, the house's residents - an odd brother and sister - extend a unique invitation to someone who's different or lonely: a precocious teenager, a recently divorced policeman, a shy college student. But what really goes on inside Slade House? For those who find out, it's already too late....

Catch the Jew! recounts the adventures of gonzo journalist Tuvia Tenenbom, who wanders around Israel and the Palestinian Authority for seven months in search of the untold truths in today's Holy Land. With holy chutzpah, Tenenbom boldly goes where no Jew has gone before, at times risking his life as he assumes the identities of Tobi the German and even Abu Ali in order to probe into the many stories in this strange land and poke holes in all of them.

Thank You!

Much appreciated insights. Well written narrative on long overdue subject matter. This book is very thought provoking, especially its sections on ICRC and other NGOs. I hope this book will prompt greater discussions about antisemitism within Germany.
