Wish I read it instead of listened to it.

I enjoyed the story but the narration wasn't great. It made me dislike Cora from the beginning although as I got into the story I liked her despite the awful interpretation. Narrator made Paige sound like a surly macho male and totally missed representing her true character. She did the two unlikeable males well. I'm pretty sure I've listened to this narrator before and enjoyed her so this was a bit of a disappointment. But the story kept me interested.

The story was crass and ugly. It was also funny and well written. If you're not sensitive to horrible tales it certainly holds your attention. But that narrator is fantastic. I didn't know someone could act like that using only their voice. I am so tempted to listen to Hidden Bodies just to hear him but it's really not my cup of tea. Life can be ugly enough for real. I enjoy suspense or psych drama but this one is really out there.

Narration was adequate but I just finished listening to You narrated by Santino Fontana and now the bar is set somewhere in the stratosphere. YOU really wasn't for me as I'm not a fan of ugly stories but the writing and narration kept me listening. This story was so pale and dull in comparison. I skipped a ton just to read the ending.

Maybe it's a somewhat interesting story.

But I can't get past the narration. Who didn't catch that it just wasn't working and find someone else? As others have said, narration is often robotic, and then oddly upbeat when the narrator should have adjusted her voice to the somber circumstances in the book. I think I got this book as a Kindle/Audible combo. I'll read it.

Engaging story. Eleanor was difficult to like although I warmed up to her as she warmed up to others. I have a hard time with real people with a flat affect as well so it might be me. A smile and hello should be doable for most anyone. Didn't love the narrated male voices. Raymond was awful and I think his character was grossly misrepresented by how she chose to portray him. Eleanor came off like a 70 year old biddy although I think that had more to do with the writing than the narrator. Many of Eleanor's observations were witty and dead on in regards to current culture but I had to keep mentally morphing her back into a 30ish person. Her odd innocence/ ignorance of life and people never rang completely true to me. I drive 2 hours a day so stuck with the audible version but I think I would have enjoyed it much more had I read it. Would have skimmed quite a bit but all in all it was an interesting story and I enjoyed the writing.

Any additional comments?

Easily had the whole sorry story mapped out in the first few chapters. Not gripping, not chilling, not any of the accolades given in so many of the reviews. The psycho husband was the worst. As flat and one dimensional as a paper doll. No need to reiterate what all the negative reviews have already said, but you might want to read them. They pretty much nail it. I think the writer has some story telling talent but it got buried in this book. Performance was really good though.
