Best so far of the series
Revisado: 08-06-24
I would have to say that this is my favorite book of the series. The redemption of Malcolm transformed into Thomas was brilliantly done. He was flawed, and humbled,in an away that few of us will ever experience however, his transformation make this an excellent story. I’m not a fan of this narrator, but I think he did a pretty decent job Narrating the story. I have listened to this one twice already. I think most readers/listeners would enjoy itNarrating the story. I have listened to this one twice already. I think most readers/listeners would enjoy it’s sentiment.

Loose ending.
Revisado: 06-06-22
I have thoroughly enjoyed this series. All three books are well written. I especially enjoyed this one. However, the ending was just abrupt and it leaves one wanting for more. Therefore, I hope Ms. Linden has more to say regarding this family.
Aside from a rather abrupt dissatisfying ending, the book was good and worth the time spent listening to it.

Historia
Elizabeth Meredith, the youngest daughter of Rosamund Bolton, is nothing like her sensible sisters. Impatient with fancy manners, the young beauty has shunned the royal court in favor of a quiet life at Friarsgate. But to protect the future of the land she loves, she must venture into the court of King Henry VIII to find a suitable husband. Elizabeth soon scandalizes the court by forging a friendship with Anne Boleyn and by flirting with Flynn Stewart, bastard brother to King James V of Scotland.

My favorite of the series
Revisado: 04-06-22
This book is about Elizabeth, the youngest daughter of Rosamund and is the heiress of Friarsgate. She is made heiress after her irritating sister Philippa renounces the inheritance. It is time for her to marry but she has no real interest in doing so. She is taken to court by Lord Cambridge (as he taken all three of Rosamund's daughters to court to find husbands). She does not find love at court but finds love with Highlander Baen McColl. I enjoyed listening to this one and I would have to say Elizabeth is my favorite of the three daughters. She is bold, outspoken but kind and loving. She is stubborn as well which made for some interesting dialogue between the H and h.
Anne Boylen loses her head at the end of this book and it was very interesting how Ms. Small dealt with her as a character. I think readers would like the creative stance she took with her character.
This is the third book in this series and i would like to end the review with how much I appreciated Tom's role in this series. i believe the listener will agree with me when I say, his character enhanced this series tremendously. He was generous, kind and supportive. He was always available when needed and made many sacrifices to see to happiness of them all. It i I laughed out loud so many times when he would start or end a pithy comment with "my dear girl/boy"
The narrator's voice was just grating but not so much you could not finish the story.
This book is credit worthy in my opinion.

I really do not like Philippa
Revisado: 04-06-22
This book is my least favorite in this series but not an unworthy listen. I really did not and still do not care for the heroine in this story. If Ms. Small intended for the reader to be irritated by her, she succeeded. She was spoiled, unnecessarily pompous and just irritating. I was hoping Crispin (H) would just move on. She was slightly less irritating by the end but only slightly.
The secondary characters were good enough to make he story interesting and will keep the listener from giving up on this one. Tom, Lord Cambridge is again featured in this story and brings the same wit and flamboyance to this one.
I think you could take or leave this one. The historical events are interesting and added depth to the story. I am not convinced this one is credit worthy.
The narrator had a high pitched whine that was not very pleasant on the ears but after a while I did adjust to it (listened on 1.3 speed)

Good story; decent narration
Revisado: 04-06-22
I really enjoyed this book. It is done in the usual forthright style of Bertrice Small. There are interesting, strong women, intrigue and court nonsense. The book opens with Rosamund falling in love at first sight with Patrick Leslie and he with her. I was sad for them both when their relationship ended. Nevertheless, she finds love in the end. There are some interesting historical events occurring as a nice backdrop to this story. I really enjoy books that weave true historical events with a good love story.
Who I enjoyed the most about his book was Tom, Lord Cambridge. He is a secondary character with a preeminent role. He is a support, voice of reason, and a fount of wisdom in this story. His flamboyant and witty style add a very nice touch to this book. I do believe this book is meant to be read/listened to in succession. There are four books total. I will be taking some time to read Rosamund as it is not currently on audible and is the first book in the series. However, there is no need to them in order to enjoy them.
The book is lengthy but not boring; well written and decently performed.

19 hours of bliss.
Revisado: 03-19-22
I knew I would enjoy listening to this book as I had already read the book. I was not disappointed. Alex brought this magnificent story alive. He gave each character the right tone and nuisance that brought one into the story and kept the listener firmly put. The story is well told, interesting, historically accurate and well worth a credit or member price to listen.
This book is about Francis and Ashley. Both are cavalier soldiers exiled in France trying to make a life for themselves and finding love and adventure in the process. I will not recount the story, it is not necessary in this review, however, it is full of all that those of us who love Stella Riley's books enjoy and was well worth the agonizing wait. Now we must all wait again for the Lord of Misrule, book four in this series....I will be impatiently waiting.

I liked everything about this book
Revisado: 08-08-21
There was really nothing I did not like about this book. The pace was good, the dialogue was interesting, and the conflict between the hero and heroine was minimal. It was nice to listen to a story when the author allows the characters to behave as adults and actually communicate. I think that this i what I enjoyed the most. Lilian and Valentine were ALWAYS honest with each other and straight forward. This fact did not detract from the story and did not make it boring. or lack complexity. That just goes to show that prolonged conflict and lack of communication does not make a story more interesting but more frustrating in my opinion.
The narration was good. Her male voices were not as good as other narrators but it was not off putting.
The story was interesting, not too long and the characters were enjoyable.
You will not waste your time or credit with this one....

One dimensional
Revisado: 07-15-21
This book was very one sided. We only get the story from the heroine's point of view. I kept waiting on the hero's thoughts and by chapter 4 I figured the author chose not to give him any... Sad. The book could have been so much better. I liked Minerva, She was strong, kind and resourceful. Nye was just a big dumb, mean oxen of a man who did not contribute much except sexual passion to the story. I would not use a credit on this book.
I usually like Colbreath's books but this one is not very good.

Well written!
Revisado: 03-06-21
I would have given this book a 5 star rating except the heroine is a child. I was uncomfortable with that, yet realize that this was the way for the time in which the story was written. Teenage girls were married to older men....
That being said, the book is excellently written and the performance is spot on.
I enjoyed both the historical backdrop and the characters themselves.
Elenanore is intelligent and wise beyond her years and is no doormat. I appreciate that Ms. Small did not make her weak and subservient. I enjoyed Ranulf as well. He is the kind of hero one loves. He is honorable, loyal and kind. Yet more than able to care for those he loves. The villains are truly wicked and I enjoyed one of them receiving her just due.
The book is long but not at all boring or tedious. The secondary characters are enjoyable as well.
It is a good story and is certainly credit worthy.

Worth the wait
Revisado: 12-07-20
I have been waiting along with most others for the second installment of The Difficult Dukes and I am not sorry for it. If it took Ms. Chase this long to strike the right notes for this tale, then I would say the time was well spent. The two main characters were excellent and made for each other. She was the making of him and he was the right complement to her. The story was very well developed and we got to know the characters quite well. Though dissolute, Ashmont has a good heart and is ripe for change. His transformation was well done and believable. Cassandra opened her heart to Ashmont and Ms. Chase did an excellent job of telling it.
Ms. Reading does a good job with the narration as usual.
This is a tale of a dissolute rake and a fiercely intelligent young woman finding companionship, love and common ground with each other.
This book is definitely worth a credit.
