It hurt my ears
Revisado: 03-03-25
I did not like the narrators voice at all. The vocal quality was bad, as in like fingernails on a chalkboard. Irritating. I do confess to having misophonia so that could just be me. I didn’t think there was enough difference between the voices of the character and finally just gave up. I didn’t finish the book.

Historia
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

An Early American Mid Wife
Revisado: 02-20-25
Ariel Lawton, author of “The Frozen River” creates an interesting cast of characters who are millwrights, doctors, restaurant owners/workers, a pastor and his wife, soldiers, housewives, carpenters, grain and meat buyers, a judge, lawyers, horsemen, beautiful unmarried women and men who are interested in them, and a midwife.
The author builds her characters and gives them descriptions, names, and her impressions of their character. She tells memorable bits of their joys, heartbreaks, trauma, murder, childbirth, and mystery.
Like the turbulent river in the book, there is an under current of suspicion, concern, anger and fear. Several rapes and a murder have people on edge.
Even the readers are on edge, waiting until all the clues come together and the guilty are finally known.
I enjoyed this novel, which follows much of the real life of the mid wide who is the main character.
A great read!

Back To The 70s
Revisado: 02-09-25
I had hoped for more Longmeyer books and even told my husband the author could write some great books about Walt and Henry in their younger years. So I was very happy to learn about “Tooth and Claw.” An epic story of stranded men, a woman, and a very huge and savage polar bear with a penchant for killing people. I couldn’t put it down, I had to keep turning the pages to find out what was happening!
Great story and narrator. To the author : please keep the more coming!

Pippa, a high school senior takes on the difficult task of solving a murder that occurred several years earlier. The hometown people, her friends, family and her budding friendship with the victim’s brother are all well developed characters. There are twists and turns that keep the tension rising as she gets closer and closer to solving murder and more in this mystery novel. Good read.

Historia
A terrifying Lucas Davenport thriller from number one New York Times best-selling author and Pulitzer Prize–winner John Sandford. They call them Travelers. They move from city to city, panhandling, committing no crimes - they just like to stay on the move. And now somebody is killing them. Lucas Davenport’s adopted daughter, Letty, is home from college when she gets a phone call from a woman Traveler she’d befriended in San Francisco. The woman thinks somebody’s killing her friends, she’s afraid she knows who it is, and now her male companion has gone missing.

The Worst of the Worst
Revisado: 08-01-24
There have been many villains in the Prey series, but Pilate and his band of disciples are very serious killers. Of course our hero and his band of crime fighters are in their trail. The story is well played. I did like seeing a more grown up Lettie, her involvement and growing crime fighting instincts. It will be interesting to see how she is portrayed in future books.

Historia
Murder. Scandal. Politics. And one billionaire heiress so dangerous in so many ways. An explosive Lucas Davenport thriller from number one New York Times best-selling author John Sandford. All hell has broken loose in the capital. An influential state senator has been caught with something very, very nasty on his office computer. The governor can’t believe it - the senator’s way too smart for that, even if he is from the other party. Something’s not right.

I disliked that Grant so coolly got away with murder and other crimes. I hope Lucas has another chance to reveal how ruthless she is, despite her silken look. I also liked learning more about the computer Geek/hacker and his criminally minded wife, Lauren, and her nonchalant action with one of her stolen jewels. They added flavor to the book!

Historia
.Lucas Davenport has seen many terrible murder scenes. This is one of the worst. In the small Minnesota town of Deephaven, an entire family has been killed - husband, wife, two daughters, dogs. There’s something about the scene that pokes at Lucas’s cop instincts - it looks an awful lot like the kind of scorched-earth retribution he’s seen in drug killings sometimes. But this is a seriously upscale town, and the husband was an executive vice president at a big bank. It just doesn’t seem to fit.

Interesting Characters
Revisado: 03-11-24
I liked the variety of characters in Stolen Prey. Bankers, thieves, a schizophrenic, the interestingly named trio from Mexico, Uno, Dos and Tres. Not the most intelligent, but good at being bad and offering some comedic moments. The usual squad of police officers and the relationship between Lucas and Dell. The plot was very good, and tricky. Great fun!

The Secret History
Revisado: 11-10-23
Donna Tartt’s book about a small group of six students and their Greek professor, with ancillary characters to round out the story, is interesting. The story takes place at a small college in a small town in Vermont.
The reader gets to know the characters through their relationships collectively and their interactions between two or three of the group at a time.
Richard, the newest member to the group tells the story. He is curious about the others, who have known each other longer. He notices strange behaviors, has suspicions about the activities they indulge in that exclude him; and gains insights into their motivations, core beliefs, insecurities, and their deep secrets.
Richard, who is not well off financially, while the others don’t appear to have financial worries at all, is shocked to learn that this is not completely true. He also comes to know that these new friends, whom he feels extremely grateful too because they welcomed him into their group, don’t have a strong moral compass among them.
Richard starts to feel troubled and insecure as he’s drawn more deeply into his relationships with them. Their finances, families, addictions, and previously unknown criminal activities are wrapping their tentacles around Richard too and are scaring him, for good reason. Deadly things are going to happen.
Good story. Not so good narration. Ms Tartt does not have the vocal range required to do men’s voices. Many carried shades of Bunny and he had an irritating tone.

Scarpetta’s first performance
Revisado: 10-08-23
The story started strong, giving us glimpses into character personalities and introducing some of their histories. The plot was good but story lagged in the middle. However towards the end the tension increased. I thought giving us an unknown bad guy choice was shocking but true to life and murder. Many people are killed by complete strangers and not by a family member or someone the victim knew. Good story and good listen!

The Republicans are coming to St. Paul for their convention. Throwing a big party is supposed to be fun, but crashing the party are a few hard cases the police would rather have stayed away. Chief among them is a crew of professional stick-up men who've spotted several lucrative opportunities, ranging from political moneymen with briefcases full of cash to that armored-car warehouse with the weakness in its security system.
