Good story, but a little too traditional
Revisado: 06-10-21
The story was gripping, depressing, and at times a bit gory. I love the premise. However, I did not love that it was a pretty traditional family... in the sense of gender roles and expectations for women vs men. There was a comment about how "males were more likely to survive than females." Surviving in this situation requires quick thinking and strategy more than anything else. Those aren't gendered concepts. It lacked any kind of diversity in any aspect, so it was hard to connect to, and that turned me off. But overall, it was a good book. The characters were a little 2 dimensional, but I liked seeing how they survived each new situation.

Historia
After surviving the Vile Rot, Isoka, Meroe, and the rest of Soliton’s crew finally arrive at Soliton's mysterious destination, the Harbor - a city of great stone ziggurats, enshrouded in a ghostly veil of Eddica magic. And they're not alone. Royalty, monks, and madmen live in a precarious balance, and by night take shelter from monstrous living corpses. None know how to leave the Harbor, but if Isoka can't find a way to capture Soliton and return it to the Emperor's spymaster before a year is up, her sister Tori's life will be forfeit.

Awesome!! Sometimes a little slow and confusing
Revisado: 05-19-21
Great story, but it was so different from the first that, at first, I didn't like it. Once I got used to the difference, I loved it. Great ending as well. Lots of details though, it was at times hard to keep track, and the pace was a little slow sometimes. overall great continuation of the previous book!

In the lower wards of Kahnzoka, the port city of the Blessed Empire, 18-year-old ward boss Isoka enforces the will of her criminal masters with the power of Melos, the Well of Combat. The money she collects goes to keep her little sister living in comfort, far from the bloody streets they grew up on. When Isoka's magic is discovered by the government, she's arrested and brought to the Emperor's spymaster, who sends her on an impossible mission: Steal Soliton, a legendary ghost ship - a ship from which no one has ever returned. AMAZING! MUST READ!
Revisado: 05-08-21
Best book I've read in a LONG time! Utterly captivating. Very well written women characters, lovely lesbian romance that feels natural alongside the action. A bit dark, mentions of rape and child abuse as backstory.
I personally loved the narration as well. Voice fit perfectly with a good range for all the different characters.

Historia
"All the women of my family had gone to war... Now my turn had come... So, it is the custom that a free woman leave her mother's house to bind herself and those of her blood to a neighboring clan, either by the sword or by the cradle." So begins the story of young Tamras, as she embarks on her journey to become a warrior's apprentice. This epic story is not about battles and armor, but rather about relationships, coming of age and wisdom, and deep insights into the human experience.

Mare just wants to settle down with the girl she loves, which would be easier if Denna weren’t gifted with forbidden and volatile fire magic. Both narrators really embody the characters. The story is refreshing. Edge of my seat. Love!
