"Inspire Greatness" is different than the typical leadership books.

I've read dozens of books on leadership since it's been a passion of mine for decades. My biggest critique of them is that they tend to be conceptual and obvious. "Be empathetic." "Be a great listener."

Everyone tends to believe that they are already these things. So these books tend to be light on actual impact.

Matt Tenney's book, "Inspire Greatness: How to Motivate Employees with a Simple, Repeatable, Scalable Process" is quite different.

The book sets the tone at the start with this startling premise: that employee engagement is not the responsibility of the human resources department but instead, is THE PRIMARY JOB of every leader.

Not setting strategy, accomplishing targets, driving efficiencies, etc.

Yes, those are all noble objectives and of course every leader is hired to achieve specific results. Yet, how are you going to accomplish those outcomes if you don't have highly engaged, passionate employees that have an owners, not a renters, mindset about the company?

Matt Tenney also understands that changing leadership behavior overnight is unachievable. What IS achievable is behavior change through new habit formations. Small, bite-sized, habit change.

If you want a refreshing, actionable guide on how you can inspire the greatness in your people, read this book!

This book is really two books in one. It starts with the "managing up" part so if you have a boss, I highly recommend you read this useful, engaging, and "tell it like it is" book. I learned some things in the "managing down" part and definitely wish that this book had been around when I first started managing people.

I've been in the workforce for decades so I wasn't sure if this book would bring any new insights. IT DID! Loved the section on how to create a vision or mission with your team.

I listened to the audiobook and found the author's reading of her book to be an added bonus.

Ellen Taaffe is a highly regarded expert in her field, developing female leaders through her programs at the Kellogg MBA program at Northwestern University in Chicago.

Taaffe's concept of "The Mirrored Door" are the biases that women have internalized and don't even know that they have internalized (SO pernicious!) However, this insightful book shows you YOUR own mirrored door and the ones your friends and colleagues also have. Once you discover your mirrored door, Taaffe shows you how you blast through it and bring your mentees, colleagues and friends along with you.

I found the advice in her book extremely practical and her personal stories relatable and authentic. I especially enjoyed listening to the audio version, Taaffe's voice is calming, warm, and grounding, Buy this book for yourself and the women in your life, from high school seniors to college graduates to mid-career and beyond!

As an activist in the diversity, equity, and inclusion space since 2014, I’ve read and experienced many thought leaders over the years. All illuminate the challenges, yet few offer practical actions that leaders can take.

This book provides insightful and simple steps leaders can take, no matter where they are on their journey to foster more inclusion and engagement among their teams.

I particularly enjoyed the audiobook, Gena’s voice is energizing, yet calm, and full of warmth. Her own personal stories were valuable, vulnerable, and relatable (especially the one about the her neighbor’s flag!)

If you are a leader who wants to increase inclusion in your team, department, or organization, this is the book!

In this profoundly personal, yet informative book, Frederick Marx (filmmaker of "Hoop Dreams" and other movies of social change) details the history, nature, and practices behind rites of passage, monumental moments of a human's life that can be marked by ritual and filled with meaning.

Marx details the urgent need for society to mark these moments of initiation, for example, of how children move out of childhood into adolescence and adulthood, hopefully bearing with alacrity the additional responsibility that pairs with fresh freedoms.

He also discusses the impact of his father suddenly dying at age 41 and the deep trauma that left on his 9-year old self, his siblings, and his mother. He movingly describes the celebration of life he organized for his dying beloved wife, who was to pass away 12 days later. Humbly describing his own searching, his moments of anxiety, questioning and self-doubt, Marx opens himself up, courageous in laying bare his own vulnerable humanity.

The audiobook is laced with audio interviews, which adds authenticity, purity, and spirit to the experience.

Marx has devoted his life to bringing the sacred to the every day, the practice of mature masculinity, advocating for the bi-directional benefits of mentorship, and consequential need for the initiation of our youth. Part non-fiction, part memoir, part how-to, this book forges a fascinating and compelling call to action, to have ourselves come alive by making a difference in the lives of others, no matter where we are in the web of life.

OUTSTANDING!

The most relevant Brene Brown book for the work I do as a coach specializing in leadership agility, psychological safety, and performance optimization.

I've been a fan of Brene's work for some years now, starting with the set of "The Power of Vulnerability" talks on audio.

I found this book EXTREMELY practical and actionable, with many exercises, practices, and actions to take in order to make the ideas of the book come to life in YOUR life.

I can immediately apply so many of the tools in the book, they are practical, effective, and insightful. I will be downloading materials and accessing the resources from the book's website for use at work (there's TONS of material there!) The workbook alone is 40 pages. And I'm going to experiment tomorrow with leveraging the List of Values with as a team-building activity, excited about that, I think it's going to be fun and insightful, as well as useful in the long run.

I read lots of really great books, although many times while the books are inspirational, they might not have an actual observable impact on my life. This book is one of the most actionable I've read in a long time.

Reading the book also gave me lots of food for thought on self-observation and self-management.

Highly recommend this if you want pragmatic actions to take on becoming a more effective leader.

I thought I was a pretty good negotiator and my work associates scored that skill in my top 5 in a recent 360 degree feedback. However, this book illuminated circumstances where it didn't occur for me to ask and showed how deeply rooted and unconscious some of my own self-perceptions were, based on gender-based childhood experiences and cultural influences. My actions and therefore my results in the future will now be different and more impactful as a result of this book and I am paying it forward to other women by my hearty and almost fervent recommendation of it. Read it, you will be grateful that you took the action!
