Historia
When members of a prominent family disappear from a coal-mining village - and a human eyeball is discovered in a bird's nest - the local constable sends for help from Scotland Yard's new Murder Squad. Fresh off the grisly 1889 murders of The Yard, Inspector Walter Day and Sergeant Nevil Hammersmith respond, but they have no idea what they're about to get into. The villagers have intense, intertwined histories. Everybody bears a secret. Superstitions abound. And the village itself is slowly sinking into the mines beneath it.

NOT QUITE
Revisado: 04-17-17
I enjoyed 'The Yard' and felt that it was good beginning to, for me, a new historical detective series. Part 2 as described here did not quite live up to my hopes. The story, displaced from London, seemed to lack the same focus as the 1st book. London was such good backdrop to The Yard and why the author felt that he should take the characters away to another part of England so soon in the series was confusing and unnecessary. I'll give another book a chance and see if it meets the expectations.

Historia
In the autumn of 1938, Germany's reichsführer, Heinrich Himmler, is growing frustrated at the British using their regional power in India to block the passage of an SS expedition to Tibet. Determined to spite them, he plots to steal something the British hold dear and have failed for the seventh time that spring to achieve: a first summit of Mount Everest. Seventy years later, seasoned mountain guide Neil Quinn's ninth visit to the top of the world's highest mountain, this time in charge of the 16-year-old son of a Long Island billionaire, begins to unravel.

YOU CAN FEEL THE COLD!
Revisado: 04-17-17
For listening and loving to 'The One Man' this title popped up in my 'Since you liked etc.' suggestions. Mount Everest ( all 29,029 feet of her ) in many ways is the star. Seamlessly flowing from one time period to the other, the author draws you in to his thriller and dangles you over the edge. The two main characters fit the puzzle together and leaves you very satisfied at the end. Harry Farthing does a capable job as narrator and you get accustomed to his reading style as the novel progresses. Well worth the time spent.

Historia
1944. Physics professor Alfred Mendel and his family were trying to flee Paris when they were caught and forced onto a train, along with thousands of other Jewish families. At the other end of the long, torturous train ride, Alfred is separated from his family and sent to the men’s camp, where all of his belongings are tossed on a roaring fire. His books, his papers, his life’s work. The Nazis have no idea what they have just destroyed. And without that physical record, Alfred is one of only two people in the world with his particular knowledge. Knowledge that could start a war, or end it.

AUSCHWITZ
Revisado: 03-11-17
Just the name of this terrifying place sends chill down my spine. The disgusting effort to ethnic cleanse the Jews. Auschwitz was the focal point of the Nazi wickedness and full of horrors including Dr. Mengele. What would you do if you had escaped and were asked to go back ? This idea is the focal point of this terrific novel. The characters grab your heart and don't let go. I read this book shortly after the book HHhH and the juxtaposition is gripping. Enjoy!

Historia
Victorian London is a cesspool of crime, and Scotland Yard has only 12 detectives - known as “The Murder Squad” - to investigate thousands of murders every month. Created after the Metropolitan Police’s spectacular failure to capture Jack the Ripper, The Murder Squad suffers rampant public contempt. They have failed their citizens. When Walter Day, the squad’s newest hire, is assigned the case of the murdered detective, he finds a strange ally in the Yard’s first forensic pathologist, Dr. Bernard Kingsley.

POST JACK THE RIPPER
Revisado: 03-11-17
Jack the Ripper has disappeared and the people of London are not very loving towards the Bluebottles and now the neophyte Murder Squad is beginning to take shape. A plethora of really good characters start what appears to be an addictive historical detective series. At first i found the narrator and the dialogue seemed rather dry as it was filled with short one sentence chatter but the prose developed and the narrator caught the sense of each character and did a great job although the Welsh voice sounded like a Scot or a Liverpudlian ... no big deal. Lookout murders there's a terrific team coming to get you !

Historia
A debut novel in the vein of Greene and le Carré, A Dying Breed is a brilliant and gripping story of the politics of news reporting, intrigue and blood set between the dark halls of Whitehall, the shadowy corridors of the BBC and the perilous streets of Kabul, in the shadowy le Carré-esque world of foreign correspondents reporting from war zones around the world. Carver, an old BBC hack, is warned off a story when a bomb goes off, killing a local official in Kabul, but his instincts tell him something isn't quite right....

Espionage a la John Le Carre
Revisado: 11-09-16
If you like your espionage at a pace and with the depth of John Le Carre you will love this debut novel. Terrific characters, current issues and great narration by one of the best. Afghanistan is the setting hand Hannington puts you right there as well as some background surrounding the conflicts that have occurred there. Just didn't want this novel to end.

UTRED AND THE DANES
Revisado: 09-24-16
I like my history with a healthy dose of political fact, intrigue. treachery. love and blood! Bernard Cornwell always provides all of these, His research is impeccable and his delivery spot on. The story of Utred continues to unravel in the entertaining fashion that you come to expect with Cornwells' novels and did I mention the blood ? The narration is not just great it is outstanding ! All the characters live just as intended and the delivery of the action grabs you and doesn't let go. Thank you Jonathon Keeble. You just cannot resist moving on in the series.

London, September 1666. The Great Fire rages through the city, consuming everything in its path. Even the impregnable cathedral of St. Paul's is engulfed in flames and reduced to ruins. Among the crowds watching its destruction is James Marwood, son of a disgraced printer and reluctant government informer. In the aftermath of the fire, a semi-mummified body is discovered in the ashes of St. Paul's, in a tomb that should have been empty. The man's body has been mutilated, and his thumbs have been tied behind his back.

JUST KEPT GETTING DEEPER INTO THE BLOOD AND ASHES
Revisado: 09-22-16
If you enjoy historic novels you will really enjoy this one. Taking place in the ashes of London after the Great Fire of 1666 the mystery just keeps getting deeper and deeper. Well developed characters intertwine with historic events and some of the real players even make an appearance. The fire rid London of many of the rats that brought the plague to its' people but not all of them got fried by the fire.

Excellent historical yarn
Revisado: 09-19-16
This mystery takes place in the New York of 150 years ago. The time and place leap off the page and you are drawn into a terrible crime. Well written, well read, the story also resonates with current issues in the United States and in many countries in the Western World. Immigration or refugees with religious beliefs that run contrary to supposed 'god given' rights of the fine democracy. Will definitely be reading another by Lyndsay Faye !
