Historia
Did Garibaldi do Italy a disservice when he helped its disparate parts achieve unity? Was the goal of political unification a mistake? These questions are asked and answered in a number of ways in this engaging, original consideration of the many histories that contribute to the brilliance - and weakness - of Italy today. David Gilmour's exploration of Italian life over the centuries is filled with provocative anecdotes as well as personal observations.

The book is asking a question through 400 years of the peninsula’s history. What is Italy? A most perplexing, laughable, interesting answer.

Historia
At the start of the 17th century, Paris was known for a few monuments, but it had not yet put its brand on urban space. Like many European cities, it was still emerging from its medieval past. But within a century, Paris would be transformed into the modern and mythic city we now know. Most people associate the signature characteristics of Paris with the 19th century. Joan DeJean demonstrates that the Parisian model for urban space was in fact invented two centuries earlier, when the first full design for the French capital was implemented.

This book was so intriguing. Loved it all. The pictures are referred to often in the book so I highly recommend having the book in hand. This book gives the foundations to the modern-day lovely Pairs as we know it and how it developed 1600s-1700s.

Historia
From one of China’s most acclaimed writers, his first work of nonfiction to appear in English: a unique, intimate look at the Chinese experience over the last several decades, told through personal stories and astute analysis that sharply illuminate the country’s meteoric economic and social transformation. Characterized by Yu Hua’s trademark wit, insight, and courage, China in Ten Words is a refreshingly candid vision of the “Chinese miracle” and all its consequences, from the singularly invaluable perspective of a writer living in China today.

Different than expected.
Revisado: 08-15-20
I thought this was a history of China with a focus on chines characters. What it is is more of a biography. It is a story of his life with the grand events of China seen through his eyes and the experiences he had. Once I got over the change of expectation and knew what I was listening to I really enjoyed it. Small vignettes of stories that were priceless in the crazy 20th C China.

Historia
Morrison offers an illuminating study of two linked traditions that have figured prominently in 20th-century thought: Buddhism and the philosophy of Nietzsche. Nietzsche admired Buddhism, but saw it as a dangerously nihilistic religion; he forged his own affirmative philosophy in reaction against the nihilism that he feared would overwhelm Europe. Morrison shows that Nietzsche's influential view of Buddhism was mistaken, and that far from being nihilistic, it has notable and perhaps surprising affinities with Nietzsche's own project of the transvaluation of all values.

Worth the work.
Revisado: 07-15-20
This was a great beginning slightly slow middle and a fantastic finish. Lots of work to get the gist of the whole meaning of the book and concepts. I loved it though. I plan to read it again next year to refresh all the abstract ideas I learned. I bought a hard copy of the book since the ideas were worth underlining and pondering over.

Historia
April 16th, the year is 1963. Birmingham, Alabama, has had a spring of nonviolent protests known as the Birmingham Campaign, seeking to draw attention to the segregation against Blacks by the city government and downtown retailers. The organizers longed to create a nonviolent tension so severe that the powers that be would be forced to address the rampant racism head on. Recently arrested was Martin Luther King, Jr.... It is there in that jail cell that he writes this letter; on the margins of a newspaper he pens this defense of nonviolence against segregation.

Great narration. Captivating. I never knew what the content of the letter was. His ideas on civil rights still pertain to our inconsistent, complex America in 2020.

Don't miss listening to this one!
Revisado: 11-13-16
What did you love best about Leonardo's Brain?
This book teaches how we think and perceive the world.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Leonardo. Maybe author plays up too much his genius but great story and analysis of the man's abilities and consciousness.
Have you listened to any of Grover Gardner’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I know this voice any where. He has always done just fine.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, because you need to digest, ponder and spread the ideas to others before you should come back for more.
Any additional comments?
Buy and listen. Also make sure you will have time to stop and look up the works of art author describes to get the full idea of what is happening. Learning is so much a visual thing, as the book helps demonstrate.

Historia
William Shakespeare's gripping play showed Caesar's assassination to be an amateur and idealistic affair. The real killing, however, was a carefully planned paramilitary operation, a generals' plot put together by Caesar's disaffected officers and designed with precision. Brutus and Cassius were indeed key players, but they had the help of a third man - Decimus. He was the mole in Caesar's entourage, one of Caesar's leading generals, and a lifelong friend.

Historia
What is masculinity? Ask ten men and you'll get ten vague, conflicting answers. Unlike any book of its kind, The Way of Men offers a simple, straightforward answer - without getting bogged down in religion, morality, or politics. It's a guide for understanding who men have been and the challenges men face today. The Way of Men captures the silent, stifling rage of men everywhere who find themselves at odds with the overregulated, overcivilized, politically correct modern world.

Great book, engaging ideas but...
Revisado: 03-17-16
Would you listen to The Way of Men again? Why?
It was a great read, the narrator is the author himself. He makes you feel like a real man with his tough piercing voice. He fits perfect as the narrator. But who failed in their job to get the glitches out of the recording? There were dozens here and there. Maybe a smarter person than I can keep their train of thought but when you hear a glitch, you stop and think, "was that one word i missed or a whole sentence, now what was he saying, dang, I guess i should pay attention, oh man, here's another glitch, what's going on here?"
You get used to it and there are only 50 or so.
I gave it 2 stars for the glitches. Jack gets 5 for his performance.

Would you listen to Revelation, Resistance, and Mormon Polygamy again? Why?
yes
What other book might you compare Revelation, Resistance, and Mormon Polygamy to and why?
Brigham Young, Turner
What about Lisa Baney’s performance did you like?
A good recording stays out of the way of a good listen.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Staggering that this is the beginning of my religion.
Any additional comments?
This is a great story never told, at least in audio. All Mormons need to read this and see what really happened in Nauvoo and the later effects of that period into Utah. This book was so interesting in creating a narrative to the origin and the playing out of events in the story of polygamy.
