As the day dawns on the fiftieth annual Hunger Games, fear grips the districts of Panem. This year, in honor of the Quarter Quell, twice as many tributes will be taken from their homes. exceeded expectations…
Revisado: 04-19-25
this story fits so snuggly into the previous novels - no larry hangman dream needed, no cognitive dissonance required. I assume the author created the back story before writing the original trilogy because, it would be very hard to do especially this book so perfectly…but t never feels like it’s a filler. we know haymitch will win - but the focus during the games is never solely about winning, as a result these hunger games were a fascinating story because it was more about loss than victory.
not sure where another book would fit - but I would read it. and if this truly closes out the panem story, then it is as quality an ending as I have seen. here’s hoping there might be one or two more puzzle pieces that got knocked under the sofa.

Historia
It's the most dangerous case of Will Trent's career. He knows this from the moment he sets foot in the abandoned Atlanta warehouse where a body lies on the floor—the body of an ex-cop. Bloody footprints leading away from the scene reveal that another victim, evidently a woman, was carried away and has vanished into thin air. And, worst of all, the warehouse belongs to the city's biggest and most high-profile athlete—a local hero protected by the world's most expensive lawyers.

I almost didn’t get through angie’s narrative
Revisado: 03-29-25
angie is a cockroach..I realize heroes need villains but honestly the anti storyline is unnecessary because will always has the person he is chasing. it’s interesting because I found this series beca of the TV series. after reading triptych and then books 2-4 I cannot watch the TV show anymore…Why? because ormewood is a “daphne” like character (scooby doo) than a serial killer and angie is presented as a victim rather than a sociopath with a personality disorder. yes her ACES score would be through the roof, but she may singularly be the most selfish, psycho version of herself. I find it hard to believe they couldn’t make a case against her - not least of which obstructing justice and tampering with a crime scene - but the author took it easy on her. please let her just disappear!

Historia
A sinister cabal of corrupt law enforcement personnel, intelligence agents, and military officials at the highest levels of government plotted to overthrow a president. Even after they failed, they continue to secretly pull the levers of power without any accountability to the American people. This isn’t the synopsis of a fictional spy thriller. This is what is actually happening in the United States government.

I consider myself to be pretty informed. having become intensely curious about politics after listening to the gulf war 1 on a clock radio in my office at my first job out of college. I never turned the radio off or stopped reading since. I realize that politics has become something that would be wholly unrecognizable to many great names that have served in one form of government or another. I have read enough history to not be naive and think politics is a binary, right left, good bad, pro or anti america. this book is absolutely enlightening. I save countless bookmarks and have bought additional copies to send to my sons.

Dozens died of radiation poisoning, fallout contaminated half the continent, and thousands fell ill. In Chernobyl, Serhii Plokhy draws on new sources to tell the dramatic stories of the firefighters, scientists, and soldiers who heroically extinguished the nuclear inferno. He lays bare the flaws of the Soviet nuclear industry....

I was in my freshman year at Georgia Tech when this happened, and I remember much of the confusion and the manipulation of facts, but I honestly had no idea of the impact of chernobyl even today. I see so many similarities to the soviet system and today’s government funded non profit agencies. and the kill the messenger and shred the message as we become increasingly a bureaucratic state. the epilogue in many ways as frightening as the early chapters. moreover, I look at the casualties in the present ukrainian conflict and you have to feel for those that are merely pawns in the larger geopolitical schema…

It happens more than you might think. One second someone’s life is totally typical, the next it’s terribly tragic. Everything they had, everything they planned, everything they were, all of it vanishes in a flash. Shock and sorrow leave the victim staring into tomorrow’s void, wondering: How did it happen? Who did it? And why?

Historia
Myron Bolitar has always dreamed about the femme fatale walking into his office and asking for help. The woman standing in his doorway has killer curves all right: She’s eight months pregnant, which kind of ruins the fantasy. Former tennis star Suzze T and her rock star husband, Lex, are both clients, and over the years Myron has negotiated his share of contracts for the power pair. But now Lex has disappeared and Suzze is in tears, fearing the online rumors questioning the baby’s paternity have driven away Lex.

it took me way to long to figure out the title
Revisado: 01-02-25
the original narrator would have probably made this story better, and while the story was not bad - it wasn’t up to my expectations. with audio books I think that is much more complicated to figure out where it fell. I also came to the conclusion that myron is floundering in the authors mind. the engagement, his brother, dad & mom, lots of moving pieces that I muddied the plot rather than improving it. is this myron’s midlife crisis?

Revisado: 12-06-24
if this was my first exposure to the genre, i’m not sure what my expectations would be…since it is far from my first, i’m left with implausibly, imperfect situations that even more unlikely always work out. there’s cliche and then there’s wishful thinking and then there is this book. I would almost consider that it was authored as a parody- think weird al yankovic…
if I could return I would, but I can’t finish it either!

Historia
The hour is critical. The American republic is suffering its gravest crisis since the Civil War. Conflicts, hostility, and incivility now threaten to tear the country apart. Competing visions have led to a dangerous moment of cultural self-destruction. This is no longer politics as usual, but an era of political warfare where our enemies are not foreign adversaries, but our fellow citizens. Yet the roots of the crisis are deeper than many realize. Os Guinness argues that we face a fundamental crisis of freedom, as America's genius for freedom has become her Achilles' heel.

a good (not great) analysis of liberty
Revisado: 10-21-24
this book is most like not going to make anyone but author happy after you buy the book. we are all welcome to our opinions, ultimately the only way you think is if you are challenged- after all anything else would be like weight lifting with air.
I appreciate his perspective and am somewhat agree more than I disagree with the author until we got to his comments about gore’s reaction in 2000 being the model. having had the unique perspective of having a close relative on gores legal team preparing for the us appeals and supreme court - gore did not take the election in even a “marquis of queensberry” effort. so many look backs at that election have revealed the truth - our country suffered as a result. I wouldn’t give this book to anyone who hadn’t read many books on this subject.
