Revisado: 03-06-22
It follows in the vein of A People's History of the US, etc. and is almost solely focused on the trans community in the US. Still pretty good though

Historia
On Anarchism provides the reasoning behind Noam Chomsky's fearless lifelong questioning of the legitimacy of entrenched power. In these essays, Chomsky redeems one of the most maligned ideologies, anarchism, and places it at the foundation of his political thinking. Chomsky's anarchism is distinctly optimistic and egalitarian. Moreover, it is a living, evolving tradition that is situated in a historical lineage; Chomsky's anarchism emphasizes the power of collective, rather than individualist, action.

Pretty Good
Revisado: 03-03-22
Word of Warning, the book is not an exhaustive treatment of anarchism. It's more like a loose collection of Chomsky's musings on anarchism with a huge chunk of the book dedicated to the Spanish civil war. But I'm pretty sure there are famous anarchist thinkers who just never get mentioned here

I'm a Little Worried about the Reporting
Revisado: 01-17-22
No one has to make up stories when it comes to the CIA, it's clearly an organization riddled with scandals that loves to overthrow democratic governments. This is probably the first 2/3 of the book. The final 1/3 goes ALL IN on the idea that the CIA assassinated John F. Kennedy. By the final chapter, the author is arguing that RFK assassin Sirhan Sirhan is the victim of a CIA mind control program. The author veers so hard into these conspiracies (with such disdain for dissenting opinions) that I'm retroactively worried about the reporting throughout the entire book.

The tale of the Bechtel family dynasty is a classic American business story. It begins with Warren A. "Dad" Bechtel, who led a consortium that constructed the Hoover Dam. From that auspicious start, the family and its eponymous company would go on to build the world, from the construction of airports in Hong Kong and Doha to pipelines and tunnels in Alaska and Europe to mining and energy operations around the globe.

Great book! Really exposes the shadowy world of private government contractors who operate totally outside of any "free markets" and instead rely on a revolving door of academics/politicians/businessman

Good, Slightly Lopsided
Revisado: 01-25-21
Based on the subtitle, I was a little worried that this would devolve into conspiracy theories. Luckily, the book is much more clear eyed about the role of the BIS. It has some great chapters about the bank during WW2, but after that there's a noticable drop in details. Instead of ruling the world, the BIS send to get neutered after WW2. Also, keep in mind that the BIS is separate from the IMF and World Bank, so you won't learn much about them here.

Historia
The United States invaded Iraq with grand ambitions to bring it democracy and thereby transform the Middle East. Instead, Iraq has disintegrated into three constituent components: a pro-western Kurdistan in the north, an Iran-dominated Shiite entity in the south, and a chaotic Sunni Arab region in the center. The country is plagued by insurgency and is in the opening phases of a potentially catastrophic civil war.

Strong Perspective
Revisado: 01-23-21
The key thing to keep in mind before you buy is this: the book is not written by a journalist. It's written by a US politician who had a lot of knowledge on the ground and connections with the Kurds. This makes the book really interesting and worth a listen. Just keep in mind that the author's own experiences loom large in his analyses of the conflict

Historia
The independence of the Federal Reserve is considered a cornerstone of its identity, crucial for keeping monetary policy decisions free of electoral politics. But do we really understand what is meant by "Federal Reserve independence"? Using scores of examples from the Fed's rich history, The Power and Independence of the Federal Reserve shows that much common wisdom about the nation's central bank is inaccurate.

Talking through a Theory
Revisado: 09-17-20
I liked it overall but at times it feels like he stretches out the content (e.g. the long summary of a scene from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy). Then again, you might like this if you're looking for a conversational style with jokes and pop culture references instead of a dry, formal work of non fiction.
