Historia
Outside the island there is nothing: the world was destroyed by a fog that swept the planet, killing anyone it touched. On the island: it is idyllic. One hundred and twenty-two villagers and three scientists, living in peaceful harmony. The villagers are content to fish, farm and feast, to obey their nightly curfew, to do what they're told by the scientists. Until, to the horror of the islanders, one of their beloved scientists is found brutally stabbed to death.

A major disappointment
Revisado: 06-30-24
I loved Turton's earlier novels but this one is a major disappointment. Contrived plot and characters who I couldn’t care about. In fact, I wonder if the author even cared about them.

Historia
In her international bestseller SPQR, Mary Beard told the thousand-year story of ancient Rome. Now she shines her spotlight on the emperors who ruled the Roman empire, from Julius Caesar (assassinated 44 BCE) to Alexander Severus (assassinated 235 CE). Emperor of Rome is not your usual chronological account of Roman rulers, one after another: the mad Caligula, the monster Nero, the philosopher Marcus Aurelius.

A worthy follow up to her excellent SPQR
Revisado: 02-09-24
I am generally well-grounded in Roman history, so I give this book high marks for expanding beyond the “who, what, where, when” of history to the “how”. For example, it amazed me how descriptions of Roman dining explained so much about how Roman rulers ruled. Mary Beard does an excellent job narrating her book. Her voice added so much to my enjoyment and attention to her work. This is a worthy follow up to her excellent SPQR.

Amazing start
Revisado: 02-07-24
Bottom line, the combination of Gregory Ashe's story and J.F. Harding's narration is terrific and amazing. I can’t believe that Harding pulled off such a completed script, keeping four couples separate, even as they banter all together. This is just the start. Three more novels to go. It’s going to be a wild and wonderful trip.

Second time was the best
Revisado: 11-14-23
Just finished this book for the second time, two years later. This time with the Audible recording. I had forgotten much of the details but knowing the general plot allowed me to focus on how well the author crafted such a complex story. I can say I enjoyed it much more the second time. Audible's narrator was terrific, which added so much to the overall experience.

Historia
Brute leads a lonely life in a world where magic is commonplace. He is seven and a half feet of ugly, and of disreputable descent. No one, including Brute, expects him to be more than a laborer. But heroes come in all shapes and sizes, and when he is maimed while rescuing a prince, Brute's life changes abruptly. He is summoned to serve at the palace in Tellomer as a guard for a single prisoner. It sounds easy but turns out to be the challenge of his life.

Nuanced and beautifully written
Revisado: 11-17-21
I took my time with this one. It was so nuanced and beautifully written I didn’t want to rush it. The coming together of the protagonists moved at a deliberate pace, but it was believable and necessary for these two.
K C Kelly's narration was spot on. Perfect voices for the two MCs; I loved hearing them speaking. The supporting characters were great, too, particularly Warin.
Terrific story that I know I’ll come back to again.

Perfect combination of author and narrator
Revisado: 09-03-20
I’ve read this novel three times, twice along with Kirt Graves' narration. Each time I’ve read it, I’ve come away marveling at TJ Klune's ability to craft a story that's emotionally true and totally engaging. Kirt's narration Is powerfully on point, bringing TJ's words and characters to life. He has a way of conveying strong emotions in a subtle, believable way. I can’t praise his narration enough.

Historia
Winner of six Lambda Literary awards, the Henry Rios mystery series is iconic and Michael Nava has been hailed by The New York Times as “one of our best” writers. Here, Rios delves deeply into his Latino identity as he defends a young man charged with assassinating a prominent Los Angeles Latino politician. The San Francisco Chronicle hailed the novel and its author: “A beautifully conceived but gritty novel.... Nava writes the kind of small, clean, powerful novels that build in emotional power almost invisibly, leaving us breathless at the end.”

Solid, hard-nosed mystery with an uplifting message
Revisado: 08-02-20
Solid, hard-nosed mystery, good characters, strong message about overcoming sexual and racist discrimination, and a powerful return to the world of the 1980s. The author's uplifting message of self-acceptance is beautifully expressed in a statement he makes in an appendix at story's end:
“Rios was saved by his homosexuality from walking in his father’s footsteps because he was forced to accept about himself the unacceptable. His coming out was not simply about sexual orientation, much less sex, but an expression of a fundamental truth about his very being. His coming out represented a decision to go through this life as a whole person, not one divided against himself.”
Sadly, this appendix is not included in the audiobook.

TJ Klune takes you deep to grief
Revisado: 07-25-20
To begin, TJ Klune is one of favorite authors. He takes you inside characters like none other, and with Benji he goes deep into grief, so be prepared for that. At times it feels overwrought to the extreme. But somehow it works. I’m not a Christian so I had to suspend my usual reaction to religious themed plots, but Cal being such an engaging character made it easy. Matt Baca does an excellent job narrating the story, capturing emotions beautifully.

Story just okay, narration excellent
Revisado: 06-07-20
I can’t rave about the story as others have. It was okay but dragged on and on a lot. But I was held by Stephen Lang's excellent narration. Koontz normally makes the implausible plausible but not this time. I went along for the ride, little more.
