Kind-Hearted
Revisado: 12-12-24
I liked the values and intention of this book to encourage acceptance of people who are atypical. It was a little clumsily written. Not very sophisticated. But perhaps a good book for youth in this time.

Historia
Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul.

Unexpectedly Beautiful
Revisado: 09-22-24
It took me a while to get into this book. Ove is an unlikeable character. But he grew on me, as he did on Parvana. In the end, I was reminded of the stern characters in my German family. Hard-working, blunt, thrifty, and loving, in their own pratical way. For me, it's a story of a man from a generation shaped by war and need. It was healing to hear.

Historia
With no water, no air, and no native life, the planet Gora is unremarkable. The only thing it has going for it is a chance proximity to more popular worlds, making it a decent stopover for ships traveling between the wormholes that keep the Galactic Commons connected. If deep space is a highway, Gora is just your average truck stop. The Five-Hop is run by an enterprising alien and her sometimes helpful child, who work hard to provide a little piece of home to everyone passing through.

I enjoy Becky Chambers' writing and this series. There were some really good things about this book but it didn't quite hang together for me.

Fascinating woman
Revisado: 06-26-24
I really enjoyed learning about Belle da Costa Greene. She was a fascinating woman. I also enjoyed the exploration of the historical context of her life. However, the story was slow and too long.
One pet peeve I've developed with audiobooks. Readers should not misprounce words. It happened several times over the course of the novel. An example was the mispronunciation of the "Elgin Marbles." Belle da Costa Greene would surely have known how to pronounce that. Annoying and distracting.

Beautiful, violent and sad
Revisado: 05-17-24
I loved the story of the land and the succession of people on it. I also enjoyed the beautiful descriptions of nature. Most of the stories are sad and, while death is to be expected, there is a surprising amount of violence and murder. It was good but not uplifting.

a story for our time
Revisado: 05-08-24
A novella about Phillip, Naomi's son as an adult in the future. Excellently constructed story. A lot to ponder that is relevant in our current time. The world is palpable. As usual with Expanse stories, it's a bit grim. But also determined with a glimmer of hope. It left me thinking...

Historia
Hundreds of years ago, the last humans on Earth boarded the Exodus Fleet in search of a new home among the stars. After centuries spent wandering empty space, their descendants were eventually accepted by the well-established species that govern the Milky Way. But that was long ago. Today, the Exodus Fleet is a living relic, the birthplace of many, yet a place few outsiders have ever visited. As many Exodans leave for alien cities or terrestrial colonies, those who remain are left to ponder their own lives and futures.

Good characters
Revisado: 04-23-24
I enjoyed the characters in this novel. The story is mostly an exploration of the world through their stories. The multiple stories made it hard to follow at first. Seemed like a bit of a experimental narrative. It might be enjoyable to read it again, now that I know them all. It did come together in the end. In usual Becky Chambers style, they struggle with very relatable human problems. She is so kind to her characters in their imperfection. It is gracious and hopeful outlook on a flawed world.
I struggled a bit with the narration. The narrator often has a strange cadence with an emphasis on the wrong word and sometimes mispronouces words. She does voice the characters well.

So funny
Revisado: 03-13-24
I loved this audiobook. I can't think of what to write that wouldn't be a spoiler. Clever, silly, irreverent, social commentary - sarcastic with a moral center. A fun romp. Loved the animals. Laughed out loud at some parts. Wil Wheaton was the perfect reader. It wouldn't have been the same without him.

Western folklore and mythology are rife with brilliantly creative, fulfilled, feisty, and furious role models for aging women, despite our culture's focus on youthfulness. In her exciting new book, mythologist and psychologist Sharon Blackie explores these archetypes, presenting them in a way sure to appeal to contemporary women. Drawing inspiration from these examples, women can reclaim midlife as a liberating, alchemical moment rich with possibility and their elder years as a path to dynamic power.

huge blind spots, needed an editor
Revisado: 02-18-24
I wanted to like this because a dear friend recommended it. But I didn't enjoy it. The first section was very promising. Some gems of wisdom about giving birth to self in your elder stage of life, claiming a power that is not through one's relation to other people. There are good things throughout about cultural attitudes toward and mythology about elderly women. Also good things about weaving and creating, about sharing wisdom and mentoring, and relationship to the land.
But whenever she talks about Christian stories or wise women (ex: Hildegaard of Bingen) she is conpelled to dismiss Christianity. I mean, she doesn't have to be a Christian for me. Just at least give it the credit and respect you give other beliefs systems and mythology. You might find there are a LOT of cool Catholic sisters and women from other Christian traditions who are very wise and interested in the same things you are (archetypes, aging wisely and intentionally, connection to creation). Want to know about grace, calling, and Imago Dei? Maybe expand your research because Christian women have thought and written about all those things extensively.
I cannot stand the notion that "we are here to learn a lesson." That is really toxic theology. What lessons did victims of torture and murder come to learn? It deals poorly with evil. Which leads me to the privilege of the writer. How many of us have the money to live around the world (the last being an 8-acre sheep farm in Wales)? It gives a lot of time and freedom the rest of us don't have.
Maybe I would have liked this more if I was a Jungian scholar. Too many rambling stories. It felt scattered and would have been more effective if it were tighter.
Finally, what was that TERF rant in the middle section? I got through it and soldiered on, hoping the end section about death would be valuable. I wasn't. Those who put it down after the TERF section didn't miss a lot.

Great characters
Revisado: 12-06-23
I really enjoyed the character development in this book. I grew to love the whole crew. There was a bit too much to explain about each species and world. It sometimes got in the way of the story. But overall, fun and endearing. The narrator had some trouble with cadence which was sometimes distracting, although she voiced the characters well. She did not know how to pronounce the word "heretic" which was annoying when it was repeated on a chapter entitled "Heresy." Overall, I enjoyed it and am looking forward to more books in this series.
