The friends to lovers (especially a dating training) trope is one of my favorites, so when I read the premise I was REALLY excited about this one. And then I read the reviews and bumped it to the top of my list to listen immediately.

And I was just… totally disappointed. There is no mystery here. Nothing to work through. Nothing to root for. And it’s just so unfocused, it can’t decide what it wants to be. The secret agent thing adds NOTHING and wasn’t even interesting. The relationship between Beacon and Grace is clinical at best. Absolutely no angst, which is fine… but if you are going to have no angst, you gotta show chemistry. There was none. The secret agent conflict felt trite. I fast forwarded to listen to the ending and get it over with because I was so uninvested.

I am honestly surprised by the rave reviews. I may check out some others in the series because I typically like this author. This wasn’t it.

Zero chemistry. Zero stakes. I have no idea how Paige and Logan went from marriage of convenience to all of a sudden being in love with each other.

There is nothing hot, sexy or loving about Paige having to do all the work. I mean, she basically sexually harasses him until he finally submits, which is uncomfortable to read and frustrating as hell - I sure as hell am not going to beg any man to screw me.

And then when shit ultimately hits the fan and the truth of their arrangement is exposed, Paige is left to do ALL the groveling even after he was an absolute POS to her.

And the ending is cheesy as hell.

It was just, not well thought through. Skip it. I wish I could get my hours back.

I really liked the first 2/3 of this story. The friendship and unrequited love between Jack and Allie were sweet. Unfortunately, there was not enough follow through on the premise.

The idea that Jack is this AWKWARD—albeit swoony— doctor who is unlucky in love is not even really explored or relevant. It was just an insignificant mechanism to begin this “romance academy” that never pays off because it’s forgotten halfway through. It’s as if the author forgot what the premise was and never found her way back to it.

The whole conflict with Jack’s mom is just so trite and unrealistic, I found it hard to believe this was a real obstacle they faced as a couple. Not to mention the fact that Allie’s hesitance to commit at the climax of the story when Jack finally declared his feelings felt manufactured and like it came out of nowhere. There was no shortage of miscommunication between these two throughout, and eventually it all just seemed to exist just to prolong the conflict and extend the page count.

We are told throughout that there were some unreciprocated declarations between these two pre-book timeline (Allie apparently asked Jack out on a date years prior and he said no?)… and this is NEVER explained or resolved.

It all just felt unfinished, which is a shame because there were some lovely moments that got overshadowed by the things that didn’t work.

Just odd. There was way too much going on, and none of it contributed to the ultimate growth and development of Cameron and Jasmine. Way too many issues:

First, the whole obstacle between Cameron and Jasmine that prevented them from being together makes absolutely NO SENSE. Jasmine is in love with Cameron. She never communicates it to him despite his remaining single… but decides out of the blue she needs to get over him (with absolutely no reason) by dating another guy in their VERY close-knit group of friends? What?? So problematic.

Second, these characters are supposed to the in their mid thirties, yet there is no difference between their maturity levels THEN and NOW. I am supposed to believe that 33 year old man thinks he is dying because he doesn’t know what “benign” means? Juvenile. The lying? The deceit? The constant willful miscommunication that is supposed to reas as slapstick but it just is plain childish.

This whole thing felt like a draft that needed some serious editing.

First, the narration was excellent. It definitely filled in the story’s gaps.

The story was lovely and the love between Mia and Noah was beautiful and apparent. The story really did start strong. Unfortunately, from about midway and beyond, some plot elements felt ill-fitting and unrealistic. The direction felt unfocused and unconfident.

Not really sure the whole workplace drama added anything to the story, especially because it wasn’t fully developed or resolved. And Mia’s reluctance toward the end felt a little out of place (why now? Why all of a sudden? It’s not as if these feelings and issues hadn’t been there previously. Why now give voice to them? This is never really explored or explained.) And I think the author could have done a better job of clearly showing the turning point for when these characters left the charade and started feeling real things. The story lacked the tension it deserved because of its indecision.

Completely ridiculous and far-fetched story that is overwrought with unnecessary melodramatics (Linda is the absolute worst), and rushed feelings that never get developed properly.

But that wasn’t the worst of it. I am just not a fan of Vanessa Edwin as a narrator. At all. Her annoying, whispery cadence is so pretentious, disingenuous and contrived that it gives me a visceral reaction. Her male voices are pretty good, though, and really the only thing I tolerate about her narration. But I won’t listen to another book with her as a narrator. I fast forwarded through her chapters just to see what happened at the end.

I purchased this book because of Zachary Webber, and as usual, he is perfection as Oliver. It just wasn’t enough to carry it all.

I typically like Lauren Blakely, but this one felt uncharacteristically superficial. First, the premise is really far-fetched and I can typically suspend belief if the emotional stakes come from an authentic place but the story never really delivered there either. I felt like I was being told what to think and feel throughout instead of being shown through language and action. Not Blakely’s strongest effort in my opinion. I’d point readers to several of her others.

Then, there is the female narrator. There is a pitchy, whispery quality to her narration that feels contrived and inauthentic. It took be out of what little I did enjoy about the story because I found myself just annoyed by how fake her reading felt.

The premise of this book was promising. But ultimately, it was a letdown.

1.) the book was short and yet dragged on far too long (probably could have—and should have—been a novela).

2.) The story was just really far-fetched. For example, I find it really hard to believe that Em didn’t google ANY information about this CEO, both given what we know about her role in the company but also, who wouldn’t?).

3.) all of this could have been forgiven if the narration delivered… and unfortunately, both performances fell flat and felt ill-matched to the material. Sebastian York had no humanity in his performance (unpopular opinion, I’m not a fan of him for this exact reason - he is popular I think because of his deep bass vocal range, but to me he narrates like he is reading an instruction manual). Similarly, Grace Grant felt a bit robotic and juvenile, to the point where when the dialogue around sex started happening I felt uncomfortable. It’s a payoff that feels unearned.

I think if a Zachary Webber/Connor Crais and an Andi Arndt had read this, the emotional honesty they bring to their narrations might have conquered the story’s inadequacies. But we got who/what we got, and none of it worked.

Don’t waste your time.

What’s most telling about the MMC is not what he says TO Jenny. It’s what he says ABOUT Jenny in his thoughts. This guy is a real POS. Lauren Layne, what were you thinking with this one? I typically enjoy your books but this guy is a complete DB. It’s clear he sees her as a piece of meat and he never really gives her the apology she deserves. I don’t really understand how we get bridged from objectification, guerrilla sex and meanness all the way to “I’m in love with you.” If there WAS a journey from point a to point b, we as readers certainly weren’t along for that ride.

Also, I really don’t like this female narrator. This isn’t the first book I’ve listened to with her narration and it’s painfully slow, even when sped up because she pauses so long between sentences. I listened to her chapters at 2.0 speed and the pauses were still painfully long.

This one bothered me a lot. I just didn’t really believe the relationship, in fact… I wanted her to RUN.

I’m surprised by these reviews. I found Lincoln to be incredibly immature and difficult to like. I understand the trauma he has experienced. But so has she, and she still gives him the dignity of honesty, transparency and compassion. Not only does he lack communication skills, he also has the audacity to get upset with Daisy when she attempts to do exactly what he asked her to do: move on after he brutally ghosts and reflects her. It was hard to come back from that for me. Daisy forgives incredibly easily which, as a victim of her own trauma, feels wrong for her character’s growth path.
