Historia
In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humor and heart, she tells of growing up one of the few Asian-American kids at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother's particular high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother's tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food.

Just as good as everyone says
Revisado: 08-02-23
I was absolutely bullied into reading this by a friend (it’s been on my TBR shelf for 2 years). I think I kept putting it off because I knew it would destroy me, and destroy me it did. Michelle is a fantastic writer, capturing the nuance of mother-daughter relationships, the depths of grief, the passing of generational trauma, and the role of food in human connection.

Historia
A vivid memoir of food and family, survival and triumph, Love, Loss, and What We Ate traces the arc of Padma Lakshmi's unlikely path from an immigrant childhood to a complicated life in front of the camera - a tantalizing blend of Ruth Reichl's Tender at the Bone and Nora Ephron's Heartburn.

Great food memoir
Revisado: 07-06-23
Padma is surprisingly open about some of her most vulnerable moments, including divorce, her endometriosis, and ugly custody battle. But her discretions of food, especially her favorite Indian foods, are really what make this book great. Beautifully written, a great book for anyone who loves Top Chef or food.

Historia
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Well written, too long, perfect amount of petty
Revisado: 01-13-23
The ghostwriter should get an award, the imagery is poetic and it’s very poignant in its discussion of his father and wife. It could use a better editor though, while I came for the royal drama I didn’t need EVERY detail (I’ll never hear the word frostbite and be the same). But if you care at all about royals, you need to read this, this kind of first hand account of living in the British monarchy just doesn’t exist anywhere else.
Most of the headlines about this book are completely out of context and his family has the means to respond if they want to.

I wish I had this book 10 years ago
Revisado: 01-04-23
I have been following Tori for some time and couldn’t wait to read her book. A lot of her advice can be found for free on her podcast, however this book gives a much deeper dive into topics. As someone who grew up with a lot of shame around her spending and believed she was bad at money, I never learned much besides I should be saving more. Now I’m growing my net worth thanks to Tori. She does come from a background of no money problems, so I appreciate her bringing in other guests with different experiences. As someone one with debt, I really need to hear the stories of other people who conquered debt using these techniques. I believe anyone can benefit from this, but especially people who identify as women.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Funny and poignant, I couldn’t stop listening
Revisado: 08-18-22
I was too old for iCarly but it’s clear that writing is Jennette McCurdy’s true calling. Jennette discusses her childhood and trauma an a way that is both accessible and funny, without losing the real pain. Anyone in recovery will relate to it. I finished it in 2 days because I listened every chance I could.

Historia
On the morning of April 29, 1986, a fire alarm sounded in the Los Angeles Public Library. As the moments passed, the patrons and staff who had cleared out of the building realized this was not the usual false alarm. As one fireman recounted later, “Once that first stack got going, it was good-bye, Charlie.” The fire was disastrous: It reached 2,000 degrees and burned for more than seven hours. By the time it was extinguished, it had consumed 400,000 books and damaged 700,000 more.

Not really about the fire
Revisado: 05-03-19
This book is a comprehensive look at the past, present, and future of the Los Angeles Public Library, with the story of the fire sprinkled in. A lot of people enjoy that, but I was looking for more about the fire and the mystery and instead listened to hours about former head librarians.

Historia
Burnout. Many women in America have experienced it. What’s expected of women and what it’s really like to be a woman in today’s world are two very different things - and women exhaust themselves trying to close the gap between them. Sisters Emily Nagoski, PhD, and Amelia Nagoski, DMA, are here to help end the cycle of feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. Instead of asking us to ignore the very real obstacles and societal pressures that stand between women and well-being, they explain with compassion and optimism what we’re up against - and teach us how to fight back.

Great content, couldn’t finish it
Revisado: 04-29-19
The tips and advice in this book are fantastic, but I couldn’t get past all the trying to be cool references. The narration was awful too. I couldn’t finish listening and returned it, but plan to get a hard copy because the strategies really are great.

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

If this is a best seller, I should quit my day job
Revisado: 12-21-17
I couldn’t even finish this book it was so bad. I thought it would be a nice, lighthearted book after finishing a heavier novel. But the writing is astoundingly bad and Rosario Dawson’s over the top reading does it no favors. I kept trying to ignore its faults and get to the plot, but was totally lost at space condoms.
