Historia
When it comes to action and adventure, every hero needs a good sidekick. Holmes has Watson, Batman has Robin, and Daniel has . . . Orrin. More like brothers than friends, they always have each other's backs. And as Daniel is the big, strong, handsome type, Orrin is more than happy to remain in his shadow at school, at parties, pretty much everywhere. Then things take a turn for the truly weird when a terrible accident catapults the pair into a world totally unlike their own, in which the rules of a role-playing game hold sway.

Performance Had Issues
Revisado: 03-15-25
Every time a class or skill was said, it was said in a loud jarring robotic way. Every. Single. Time. I got tired very quickly of hearing “HERO!” multiple times in a single sentence. It would be fine if it was just when system prompts say it, but there are times when the narrator just reads something like, “My friend is the “HERO!”, I’m not a “HERO!”, they’re the “HERO!”” Story isn’t bad if you can get past it, but I dock the performance 2 stars and the book overall 1 star because of it.

Witches, Golems, Dragons Oh My!
Revisado: 01-31-25
Narration quality is as excellent as always from SoundBooth Theater.
This book is short, but good. It moves at a brisk pace mixing survival with magical progression and world building. The story sets the foundation for a promising ongoing adventure with multiple story threads already setup. The setting is a mix of high fantasy magic and a crapsack world. The main character is snarky and self reflective, while supporting cast is an interesting mix of golems that “express” empathy and knights that live like hobos.

Adair Finch is the most powerful warlock in the world, and one of the best private investigators for hire. He has dealt with corporate vampires, murderous werewolves, and even fae royalty. Everything was perfect until he lost one case—the case where he also lost his brother. So Finch retired. From magic. From PI work. From everything. Bree Blackstone, a twelve-year-old witch, doesn’t know or care about any of that except Finch’s reputation. In the middle of the night, she bangs on Finch’s door. Her mother has been murdered, and now the assassin is after Bree as well.

Magical Private Investigator Ground Hog Day
Revisado: 12-02-24
Sound Booth Theatre always knocks it out of the park with their performances.
The premise is interesting and well executed of an investigator that can relive the same day until they solve the mystery in a single day.
Aside from the fantastic premise, the other highlight of the book is the dynamic between the main character and his kid sidekick. The sidekick is a sympathetic girl, but also a frustratingly naive child. One moment will be heartwarming interactions, the next will induce forehead smacking as the kid obstinately derails the investigation and makes things difficult for the main character. Don't let let the second half of that character dynamic dissuade you, it is a good relationship with entertaining dialogue that fleshes out the main character character and seemlessly adds opportunities to explore his backstory.

Magic Card Mobster Drama Turned Gritty PI
Revisado: 11-28-24
The same tough talking, testosterone soaked world as the first book. If you liked the magic cards, dark setting, and constant fighting of the first book, you will like this one. The voice acting is excellent, the story is fast paced, the fights are well written.
My only criticisms are the relationship between the main character and the heroine being off putting due to age difference, and the author going out of his way to describe flaws in every other male character such as being fat, stupid, evil, or insufferably self-righteous. However neither of these are glaring enough to not enjoy the book, and the latter critique is common in litrpg anyways.

Historia
It’s Drop Night, the one night every decade when the gods hand out cards to a lucky few. If you get a deck, you’re a deckbearer capable of wondrous feats within the Great Game system. You can control powerful monsters and summon mantles that let you fight alongside your beasts. Ethan Wolfe, top enforcer for the Grimm family mob, has already been overlooked on two previous Drop Nights. People of his ilk seldom receive cards, as the gods tend to favor people who follow their divine mandates, but that doesn’t mean Wolfe can’t hope.

Cards, Crime, and Dogs
Revisado: 09-21-24
Soundbooth Theater’s performance is excellent as usual, the quality of sound effects and narration are some of the best.
The story is a combination of gritty crime family drama and fun magic cards. It follows the start of the main character’s journey of having cards, while a criminal turf war breaks out with him in the middle. It’s a fast paced book with lots of action and a few dramatic twists. Though, admittedly the main twist of who the main antagonist is is easy to see coming early in the book.
The main character is an anti-hero. A “criminal with a code,” who is a bad guy that wants to hunt worse guys. He also likes dogs, and they are very good boys.

He's got no talent for magic, and not a scrap of superpowers to his name. When The System boots and unlocks his powers, it forces him to follow in his father's footsteps, but he'd rather take after his mother... Maybe there's a way he can do both...

Super Powereds Meets Megamind with a Dash of D&D
Revisado: 08-22-24
This book was a blast. Great narration, great world building, great humor, great action. It’s full of comedy, fights, and “numbers go up”.
This book feels fast paced and chaotic, but not aimless. It juggles a lot of plot threads without feeling lost or derailed.
If you like superhero fantasy and/or litrpg, or ever wondered what a mad scientist mage would be like this book is for you!

Good Nature Based Litrpg
Revisado: 08-17-24
First the obvious. Travis Baldree is, as always, an amazing narrator.
Secondly, this series is at its best when it goes from action packed fights to game mechanics that are inspired by the natural sciences. From evolving beasts to balancing life and death, it feels appropriate to a nature themed game.
Thirdly, the team Venom “vibe” is nice as they grow from working together to supporting each other in game and outside of it.
Lastly, the main character is often fixated on past experiences when outside of the game or thinking about life outside the game. Which drives him to escape into the game, and the game pushes him to change as a person in game and outside of it. This is a good concept in theory, but it feels off in execution. It’s there, but feels like it could have been explored better. As it is it’s not much more than just “I do this stuff in game and now I’m like a different person in real life.”
