Some Americans cling desperately to the myth that we are living in a post-racial society, that the election of the first Black president spelled the doom of racism. In fact, racist thought is alive and well in America - more sophisticated and more insidious than ever. And as award-winning historian Ibram X. Kendi argues in Stamped from the Beginning, if we have any hope of grappling with this stark reality, we must first understand how racist ideas were developed, disseminated, and enshrined in American society.

So far, the reader's ebonics has made it difficult if not impossible for me to give this book a good listen. Additionally, the author skirts wildly from one historical concept to another. e.g. from Cotton Mather to Timbuktu and the Subsaharan trade routes (literally). It made my head twirl. To be fair, I am a white man of 64 years. My father was a Marine Corp veteran who spent his military years (eight) in North Carolina where I was born and lived for four years. New England was and is the home of all my ancestors. My father then became successful in business. I've never lived near any minorities. All that being said I will continue to listen periodically and update or continue on with this review. One other thing is that the reader is too young. This is a serious book with vast implications and an older reader may have served the listeners a bit better. So, until I return, I hope you give this ambitious book a listen too.

Based largely on documents declassified in only the last few years, One Man Against the World paints a devastating portrait of a tortured yet brilliant man who led the country largely according to a deep-seated insecurity and distrust of not only his cabinet and Congress but the American population at large. In riveting, tick-tock prose, Weiner illuminates how the Vietnam War and the Watergate controversy that brought about Nixon's demise were inextricably linked.

Not much new here. Fair writer. A better reader..
Revisado: 07-08-20
Because of the mountain of information out there about Nixon and his presidencies, this author (though a better than average writer) would have had to unveil a naked lady coming out of a cake in order to succeed in being fresh. The writer is repetitive and does lose his way from time to time; this gets boring. I guess I expected more. The reader attempts imitations of Nixon and his staff occasionally. It's so inconsistent as to be startling. For a neophyte on the subject, it is perhaps useful to listen. The reader is better than most save for what I mentioned. I did not get all the through yet but intend to have another slog and I have high hopes.

My favorite comedian, as a kid, and by far, was a relentless sex-starved pervert! Each and every instance of Bill going off track, way off track, is clearly illuminated here. One by one (60 of 'em). At the expense of a storyline, we hear one victim's story after another. If that's your desire then you got it here. Bill belongs where he is. From Lily White North-Western Massachusetts to looking at shiny cement cinder blocks all day. Penitentiaries were made for men like Bill Cosby,

Historia
The tragic death of 13-year-old Danny Croteau in 1972 faded from headlines and memories for 20 years until the Boston abuse scandal - a string of assaults taking place within the Catholic Church - exploded in the early 2000s. Despite numerous indications, including 40 claims of sexual misconduct with minors, pointing to him as Croteau's killer, Reverend Richard R. Lavigne remains "innocent." Drawing on more than ten thousand pages of police and court findings and interviews with Danny's friends and family, fellow abuse victims, and church officials, the author uncovers the truth.

The reader almost ruined the whole thing.
Revisado: 03-03-20
Mispronunciations. They are like shrieking horns. The only saving grace is that the reader mispronounces the word, in the same way, each time the word rolls around. And this reader adopts an attitude that I don't think the author had when writing. Anger. I can say that despite this defect I learned a lot. It reads more like a history of child molestation in central west Massachusetts. It could have been a good whodunnit but no. I think the book, therefore, is mistitled. That history is in fact so heinous that it was worth knowing about. There is little or nothing about Danny Couteau to speak of (the reader mispronounces even the boy's name). And the murder is NOT solved. Although the antagonist was at one point a suspect. In fact, he still lives in his mother's house. In the area where Danny was killed. The reader mispronounces the antagonist's name too. Levine (as if Jewish = Laveen instead of the French of Lavigne (Vine) in French it = La Veee-yeh. The man (when a priest) molested some 45 boys. He's got to be 80 soon. He was convicted of two instances of molestation. Did time and has since been released. Unless you really want to know the subject matter I'd pass.

Historia
In the 1950s, a young Indianapolis minister named Jim Jones preached a curious blend of the gospel and Marxism. His congregation was racially mixed, and he was a leader in the early civil rights movement. Eventually, Jones moved his church, Peoples Temple, to northern California, where he got involved in electoral politics and became a prominent Bay Area leader. But underneath the surface lurked a terrible darkness.

I found out more than I could have imagined. From Indiana to California to Guyana. Jim Jones proved to be a slimeball. Strangely I used to think he was a regular guy/pastor who went off the deep end. No. He was always off the deep end. And I wasn't all that interested in the guy. I have now listened to this book three times. It's one of my favorites. And my library is large. It's just so outlandish what this man did! Happy listening.

Bravo to this "ensemble of actors. An amazingly tasteful script. The director and the writer who adapted this for audio (not to mention the editor) deserve the award. Thank you all. I learned a great deal. This was a "page-turner." I cannot recommend it higher. I was a theatre major at the university and to be a part of such cast would have been an honor. Someone threw feces against the wall -- let it dry -- then peeled it off in shreds and let it fall to the ground, picking it up like a two-year-old with the Dead Sea Scrolls. What a bunch garbage. Try Hampton Stiles's treatment of the subject. It's coherent. The reader btw was poorly chosen. What a muddle.

This is the story of idiocy gone off the deep end.
Revisado: 10-09-19
The reader is so good it kept me going and going and going.
I would not say it was horrifying. No. It was typical of unrestrained power --while at the same time, the power has no moral training. The power is useless, predictable, and without merit. The writing, however, is way above average. I figured it would be. Hubbard, and Miscavige after him are complex and destructive people. The religion of Scientology is even worse than I thought. It's a brainwashing deal. The leaders have been nothing more than thieves. That figures. The book then is informative and it displays the reality of a nasty organization. With all that said, I enjoyed it.
This religion is a CULT. No doubt.

In the Closet of the Vatican is a fascinating description and evaluation of financial, sexual and political misconduct throughout the Catholic Church at a time when new revelations are being uncovered each and every week. This audiobook explores the underlying causes and includes interviews with numerous Cardinals and other individuals, some of whom cannot be named. Martel reveals financial scandals in the Vatican bank; political collusion with unsavoury regimes, including Castro’s Cuba and Pinochet’s Chile; sexual abuse and hypocrisy over homosexuality.

"Houston, we have a problem."
Revisado: 04-14-19
As a socially conservative Democrat and a Roman Catholic I could have taken offense at the author's numerous accusations that anyone being anti-gay was automatically gay. Case in point being the numerous members of the Curia, from priest to Pope accused of being gay or assumed to be, Due to their "fake" social conservatism such as the Traditionalist Burke "the Cardinal queen." It is amazing how many members of the Curia were in fact, interviewed by this author. And even more amazing just how many of the Curia is thought to be gay or gay homophiles. It is as if the entire circle of men around the Popes (Pope Saint John XXIII to the Blessed Pope Paul VI to Pope Saint John Paul II to Pope Francis today) e.g. the entire cadre of responsible men around the Holy See and his Cardinals (and the Cardinals too) and their Bishops and priests (and the Bishops and priests too) have been nothing more than maniacal sex fiends addicted to plush surroundings and expensive accouterment. From the paintings on the office walls to the luxuriant carpets (all strewn about) to the equally luxuriant furniture. The author spent a great deal of time making the point that the Blessed Pope Paul VI was NOT gay. Why? Not until in the last paragraph of the book does the author admit being gay himself. I found this book to be self-serving on his part (in the sense that he thinks that he and everyone are gay). If clerics do not soon begin legal proceedings for libel and slander then one must assume we are reading the truth. The Roman Catholic Church is being led by degenerate homosexuals. I must say that the author is a very high-quality writer. The translator was of high-quality too. The performer was near perfect. The church lingo was perfectly brought to the ear. I must say, though, that the author is astonishingly cynical and sure of himself but well informed of history. How he obtained all the sensitive interviews remains to be seen. And the Curia was cleaned like a trout before frying. Its guts spilled out and all about. (I gave the story a two because it was gratuitous)

Best ever treatment on the Book of Hebrews!
Revisado: 02-27-19
Pastor John Piper, as all those familiar with him know, loves the Lord. His exposition here is full of his trademark excitement and penetrating insights. I wish I lived in the Twin Cities -- I could go to his Church. The Book of Hebrews can sometimes be considered difficult and is often skipped over. If one is familiar with the Book of Exodus then The Book of Hebrews is far more understandable. However, whether you do or not, Pastor Piper fills in many gaps and brings alive the verses one by one. Then one by one again. He digs deeply. I sense that John Piper has an anointing from the Holy Spirit for expository preaching/teaching, Much more so than some Reformed Theological preacher/teachers. I pray he's with us for many more years. As he has announced in recent years of a cancer diagnosis. Thank you, Pastor! bravo.
