Historia
When Elon Musk was a kid in South Africa, he was regularly beaten by bullies. One day a group pushed him down some concrete steps and kicked him until his face was a swollen ball of flesh. He was in the hospital for a week. But the physical scars were minor compared to the emotional ones inflicted by his father, an engineer, rogue, and charismatic fantasist.

unexpected, I ended up liking Musk.
Revisado: 03-29-25
He is tough around the edges, but his moral campus and work ethic is right on. Inspirational and visionary. Yes, private life is colorful, but book was very well researched and fair to his pros and cons. I especially liked the closing paragraph: if we take the darkness and complex out of our soul, we also negate the good. Humans are not perfectly good or bad, simply we are unique, and Musk does make impossible possible more then once. that is not luck, that is character.

misrepresentation of both cultures
Revisado: 07-11-24
how did this book ever get popular?
only because it is oversimplified black and white clishe.
Druids are romanticized, even claimed that they did not commit human sacrifice, which is historically simply false. and of course Christianity is simplified to today's popular evil one.
both are spiritually and historically wrong.
the reality was way more complex and interesting.
I know this is fiction, but our society is in such polarized , and uneducated commotion because we are surrounded by this fictional good and evil illusion
it does not even make good fiction. .

Historia
Moved by his mother's death and his Irish Catholic family's complicated history with the church, Timothy Egan decided to follow in the footsteps of centuries of seekers to force a reckoning with his own beliefs. He embarked on a thousand-mile pilgrimage through the theological cradle of Christianity, exploring one of the biggest stories of our time: the collapse of religion in the world that it created. The goal: walking to St. Peter's Square, in hopes of meeting the galvanizing pope who is struggling to hold together the church through the worst crisis in half a millennium.

no spirituality, dry basic history
Revisado: 06-11-24
The title would have been better as:
Secular dry history while I'm walking.
I do not know why the author thought Pilgrimage and Eternity was a good title. He has no idea what pilgrimage is. This was nothing better than a basic church history, bitter-toned ramblings of somebody trying to walk from England to Rome.
We all know that no institution is perfect, and the Catholic Church is by far no exception. And yes, we should point out the church's failures and hurtful history. But simultaneously, there is a wonder, joy, and amazing deep spiritual quality that is more than ever needed for our society. There is a reason why the church has survived thousands of years even though it was a flawed institution. No, it was not just power and money.
The point of a pilgrimage is to connect with the eternal truth that shines through all humanity's flaws. The point of the Pilgrimage is to peel back all that is false and connect to a deeper self.
I'm sorry to say Mr Egan does not know how to connect to basic emotional intelligence beyond a superficial opinion of mind. This book is about a righteous mind with no heart and soul awareness. It was as remote from the spiritual as possible, focusing on nothing but the negative and cynical.
Mr Egan were you just trying to sell one more book on a popular sentiment wave? Because there was not even an attempt at pilgrimage here.
So if you are looking for the spiritual here, don't bother.
And if you are interested in history, there are better books.

Historia
Sleep is one of the most important but least understood aspects of our life, wellness, and longevity. Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why we suffer such devastating health consequences when we don't sleep. Compared to the other basic drives in life - eating, drinking, and reproducing - the purpose of sleep remained elusive.

painfully long winded with little content
Revisado: 05-03-24
unless you know nothing about biology, there is not much new here.
cite long winded anecdotes that can be summed up by single sentence of scientific content.
also though not surprisingly since it is a male writer, totally ignores number one reason why women cannot sleep, that is menopause and mid evening hot flash. there is talk of body temperature cooling and room temperature cooling but totally ignored the elephant in the room.
so ladies, if you are struggling with sleeping durle to menopause, save your dollars, this book will not help.

finally peace
Revisado: 07-01-23
such simple content. I have been studying and meditating on emotional maturity, or rather the lack of it, not only in families but in every relationship. Unfortunately, though our culture is obsessed with self, it is drowning in addictive and narcissistic patterns. Emotionally strong and centered and wise people are not easy to find.
I bet you will also find the content such that you already knew this, but this book connects the dots impeccably. I had a few aha moments that brought lightness to my being.
well woth the listen.

Siddhartha's search for enlightenment leads him to the river of life itself. On his journey he learns from many teachers: the ascetic Samanas, the all-knowing Gotama the Buddha, Kamala the lovely courtesan, and Vasudeva the simple ferryman.

Historia
A young woman is in love with a successful surgeon, a man torn between his love for her and his incorrigible womanizing. His mistress, a free-spirited artist, lives her life as a series of betrayals—while her other lover, earnest, faithful, and good, stands to lose everything because of his noble qualities. In a world where lives are shaped by irrevocable choices and fortuitous events, and everything occurs but once, existence seems to lose its substance, its weight. Hence we feel “the unbearable lightness of being."

balanced between absolute vulgarity and poetic beauty of human conscietiouness there lies lyrical perfection.
one of the best pieces of literature.
I have a hard time with vulgarity in literature but Kundera brings it into necessity and meaning, sheer brilliance

much needed breath of fresh air
Revisado: 04-04-23
It was a breath of fresh air to listen to topics reviewed by DeSantis using both common sense, knowledge of law and history, and wisdom.
I find both Trump and the current liberal left equally damaging.
DeSantis gives me hope that there is still a leader who is educated, grounded in common sense, and honors and recognizes our laws that guarantee freedom and prosperity.
to lead means not to be swayed by opinion. well said, Governor; we badly need this wisdom and guidance at the White House
