Questionable advice
Revisado: 06-05-22
This is mostly just a grouping of platitudes. Some are thought provoking but others fall flat or offer questionable advice. It might have been more interesting to listen to the monk's voice since he speaks English.

Historia
From the day that old Nana Reja found a baby abandoned under a bridge, the life of a small Mexican town forever changed. Disfigured and covered in a blanket of bees, little Simonopio is for some locals the stuff of superstition, a child kissed by the devil. But he is welcomed by landowners Francisco and Beatriz Morales, who adopt him and care for him. As he grows up, Simonopio becomes a cause for wonder to the Morales family, because when the uncannily gifted child closes his eyes, he can see what no one else can - visions of all that’s yet to come, both beautiful and dangerous.

Elitist and boring
Revisado: 06-01-22
Nope.... I put this book down early on and marked it "abandoned", but then forced myself to pick it up and force myself through its long-winded pages for the sake of checking off a square in Book Bingo... I hated it. The first reason I put it down was because of emotional manipulation of the reader/listener. As a mother of small children, I don't enjoy throwaway descriptions of mothers dying with their children during a pandemic just for the sake of painting a bleak picture. There were countless examples of this kind of thing throughout the book. At the same time, the "magical realism" meant that characters and storylines were not constrained by reality, which made me struggle to care about the fates of the characters. Another example of emotional manipulation is the ending. We're told in the synopsis of the book that this magical boy is going to change the fates of the family. But the main person he cared about and supposedly saved ended up miserable without much to show for his life. We're told the 40+ years that weren't covered by the book might have been happy years, but the book jumps forward to only leave us with a feeling of (manipulated) sadness.
I absolutely agree with another reader who called out the elitism and racism of this book. The hero of the book is a patron who has to deal with his ignorant peasants. We get very little of the peasant perspective. I could go on.... I haven't hated a book this much in a long time.

Historia
When the great Thomas Hardy published this heart-wrenching novel, he had no idea it would be his last. But the book stirred so much controversy and protest, Hardy vowed to never write fiction again. Jude the Obscure tells the story of a stonemason, tricked into a loveless marriage, who craves a formal education and a finer existence. Separated from his wife, Jude begins a new life with his cousin, and the couple defies social convention at every turn.

Irritating voices, cliché advice
Revisado: 10-24-19
The scenarios and "wisdom" are all very trite but it was the irritating voices that finally made me stop listening. The ensemble cast are overly enthusiastic and sound phony. One "American" voice was so goofy about 1/4 in that I simply couldn't listen anymore.

Hard to put down
Revisado: 09-29-19
At first it seems like yet another YA dystopian trilogy (and I'm not even a fan of the genre) but it's fun and light. You know from Chapter 1 that it's going to be about a love triangle, but the rest of the characters have enough depth to make it more interesting. I got swept up in the cinderella part of it - a girl who often goes hungry suddenly enjoying strawberry tarts at the palace, which was even more enjoyable to me than the love story.

Historia
In The Righteous Mind, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt explores the origins of our divisions and points the way forward to mutual understanding. His starting point is moral intuition - the nearly instantaneous perceptions we all have about other people and the things they do. These intuitions feel like self-evident truths, making us righteously certain that those who see things differently are wrong. Haidt shows us how these intuitions differ across cultures, including the cultures of the political left and right.

Lessons learned will stay with me
Revisado: 06-26-19
The ideas are well researched, well explained, and make a lot of intuitive sense. This lens allows you to become an observer of highly partisan posts rather than reacting to them. The lessons will stay with me a lifetime and may even help salvage some familial relations.
One criticism is that the middle of the book goes down an academic rabbit hole. I had to speed up playback to get through about 4 very dull hours.

Masterful
Revisado: 06-07-19
I totally agree with the reviewer who said they kept revisiting the characters months after. There are parts of the story, lessons learned, that will stay with me for a long time. And I also learned a lot about carpet making and will pay much more attention to the designs of Persian rugs from now on!

Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

Perfect narration - a masterpiece!
Revisado: 03-13-19
After 30+ hours of listening, I still didn't want it to end. This book is truly a masterpiece with characters that come alive.
One small note to the publisher is that it didn't make sense to change "reader" to "listener" just because this is an audiobook. The character was still writing, not recording his voice. It's one thing to make this change in celebrity memoirs but not in major works of literature, please!

Before long, she found herself a single mother, scraping by as a housekeeper to make ends meet. Maid is an emotionally raw, masterful account of Stephanie's years spent in service to upper-middle-class America as a "nameless ghost" who quietly shared in her clients' triumphs, tragedies, and deepest secrets.

Respect for single moms
Revisado: 02-06-19
Loved it! This is not an extraordinary story and that's what makes it so compelling and important. It's the reality that so many people face, written in a way that draws you, makes you feel like you know the people, and makes you root for their success. Mixed in were some genuinely jaw-dropping moments - some funny and some sad. Buying this book made me an active participant in Stephanie's journey out of poverty and into a successful writing career, another bonus!
