Toxically, Hurtfully Homophobic

The amount of head space the protagonist devotes to viciously anti-gay sentiments FOR NO REASON while surviving an apocalypse of the undead renders the character ridiculous and the author as sad. I wanted to like this book, the series starts out very strong and the narrator is one of the very best top-shelf talents. But then comes the constant drip-drip-drip of homophobic insults and slurs, landing in my ears like personal sucker punches.

Kept This Devout Atheist Up At Night

I am a person who enjoys nightmares. I do not share the theological views of the Warrens. The movies about Ed & Lorraine give me giggles, as obviously dismissible flights of fancy.

This book is not at all like that. This is something else altogether.

Their stories gripped me with fear such that my throat tightened. My heart rate surged, I actually had to turn the lights on and go check that my dogs were ok and accounted for.

I wrote a very long and ponderous email to the priest of my local Catholic Church.

This book is a worthy sequel to The Necronomicon.

WHY WOULD HE READ LIKE THAT

The narrator is clearly gifted when it comes to narrating dialogue, so why he would make the choice of reverting to robotic voice while narrating is beyond me. Completely ruins the book when he starts barking like a 60's era star trek computer voice.

It's hard to estimate the edifice left behind by HP Lovecraft. As a lover of horror and science fiction, so many of my favorites turn out to have clear origins in his work.
