Historia
Performance artists Caleb and Camille Fang dedicated themselves to making great art. But when an artist's work lies in subverting normality, it can be difficult to raise well-adjusted children. Just ask Buster and Annie Fang. For as long as they can remember, they starred (unwillingly) in their parents' madcap pieces. But now that they are grown up, the chaos of their childhood has made it difficult to cope with life outside the fishbowl of their parents' strange world.

This book was not for me. I did not like the narrator's voice. I did not find the plot compelling and I did not find anything redeeming in the characters.
I found the narration very monotone, dry and boring. The storyline and the ending were just too unrealistic to interest me. I basically feel like I slogged through to the end. I kept thinking something interesting might happen and since I purchased the book and didn't want to feel like I had wasted my money by not finishing it.

Historia
Patty and Walter Berglund were the new pioneers of old St. Paul - the gentrifiers, the hands-on parents, the Whole Foods generation. Patty was the ideal sort of neighbor, who could tell you where to recycle your batteries and how to get the local cops to do their job. She was an enviably perfect mother and the wife of Walter's dreams. Together with Walter - environmental lawyer, commuter cyclist, total family man - she was doing her small part to build a better world.

Interesting Social Commentary
Revisado: 09-24-10
From a strictly entertainment perspective, there were times when I couldn't get enough of this book and kept listening and listening when I really needed to be doing something else. Then there were places in the book where I thought, "this is boring and trite, will it ever end..." Viewing this book from the perspective of a social commentary it's definitely all good. I think this book, through it's characters, provides a great commentary on contemporary American society and the role that "Freedom" plays in it.

I could not stop listening to this book. It gave insight into the colonial/political/ethnic history of Ethiopia and also told a a human story that touched on faith, forgiveness and determination.

A good listen but...
Revisado: 01-17-09
This was an interesting story with good character development, a contemporary plot and an interesting setting. The narration was very good. Three things that disappointed me about this book are; First, the inclusion of sexual perversion in the story. It did not really add anything. Second, the fact that we never found out what all of the ugly business with the main character was. And, the ending left something to be desired.

Implausible Plot
Revisado: 07-09-07
I am a James Patterson fan but I must say that I was not too thrilled with this Patterson book. Without giving out any details, the plot was too far fetched. It made it hard to take the characters and the story seriously. I also did not care for the narrator. Her voice tended to be monotone and made listening to the book boring.

Historia
Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss, and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them, in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul, they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation.

This is a great story encompassing contemporary politics, history, ethnic animosity, women’s rights, friendship, and love. Although the story is heart wrenching at times, I was left with a feeling of hopefulness for the characters as well as the human race.
