Historia
Scientists are learning more and more about how brain activity controls behavior and how neural circuits weigh alternatives and initiate actions. As we probe ever deeper into the mechanics of decision making, many conclude that agency—or free will—is an illusion. In Free Agents, leading neuroscientist Kevin Mitchell presents a wealth of evidence to the contrary, arguing that we are not mere machines responding to physical forces but agents acting with purpose.

Historia
From the celebrated neurobiologist and primatologist, a landmark, genre-defining examination of human behavior, both good and bad, and an answer to the question: Why do we do the things we do? Sapolsky's storytelling concept is delightful but it also has a powerful intrinsic logic: He starts by looking at the factors that bear on a person's reaction in the precise moment a behavior occurs, and then hops back in time from there, in stages, ultimately ending up at the deep history of our species and its evolutionary legacy.

I learned so much that is important to my studies that I have half a mind to find where Kasser teaches and go study with him. But this is not a beginner’s course and I intend to listen to it 2-3 more times to let it sink in. Best listen of the year for sure!

Historia
More than 2,000 years later, Plato's Republic remains astonishingly relevant to our everyday lives. It poses one question after another that might well have been drawn from the headlines and debates of our nation's recent history: What sort of person should rule the state? Are all citizens equal before the law? Should everyone have equal access to health care? Plato's greater inquiry, however, was into the question of defining justice itself and the reasons why a person would choose a life aligned with that virtue.

Hilarious in light of Trump
Revisado: 08-10-20
Amazing passage in later chapters, where the lecturer presents an extended review of Plato's analysis of oligarchy, tyranny, and the psychology of the tyrant. Presented in 2013, long before Trump, it is an uncanny and nearly perfect description of Trump's psychology and authoritarian tendencies, the populist appeal to the masses against "the elite", right down to the narcissism, the necessity of getting rid of both enemies and friends alike, the self-dealing and profiteering, the inability to hold friendship or empathy, it's all there, from Plato 2,500 years ago.
But even more remarkable is the lecturer's insistence that this sort of thing could never happen in America, because of the special qualities of American democracy, the separation of powers, the independence of the Supreme Court, and wait for it... that bulwark of democracy, the Electoral College!
Never thought I'd get such a belly laugh from a lecture on Plato's Republic!

In 16 in-depth lectures, Professor Dalton puts the key theories of power formulated by several of history's greatest minds within your reach. These lectures trace two distinct schools of political theory, idealism and realism, from their roots in ancient India and Greece through history and, ultimately, to their impact on the 20th century.

Historia
1984 isn't just a novel; it's a key to understanding the modern world. George Orwell's final work is a treasure chest of ideas and memes - Big Brother, the Thought Police, Doublethink, Newspeak, 2+2=5 - that gain potency with every year. Particularly in 2016, when the election of Donald Trump made it a best seller ("Ministry of Alternative Facts", anyone?).

Really an awesome book
Revisado: 10-29-19
I've always argued since reading 1984 in the 60's in high school that you can't understand politics - and especially American politics today - unless you've read 1984. This book makes that so clear, and is such a fascinating and easy book to listen too - I highly recommend it!

In What It Means to Be Moral: Why Religion Is Not Necessary for Living an Ethical Life, Phil Zuckerman argues that morality does not come from God. Rather, it comes from us: our brains, our evolutionary past, our ongoing cultural development, our social experiences, and our ability to reason, reflect, and be sensitive to the suffering of others.

Very useful!
Revisado: 10-29-19
Great book on this topic, highly recommended. However I do disagree with a couple of assumptions that so many atheists make - and I am a lifelong atheist. Firstly, obviously there is purpose to life, every living thing gets up in the morning filled with purpose. It's one thing to say our purpose was not given to us by a supernatural power, but it seems to me foolish to argue that there is no purpose. If there is no purpose, why does evolution exist? Why do living things try to survive and reproduce? Will you argue that the evident purpose of every living thing is not really a purpose?
Secondly, obviously science can tell us all we need to know about morality. Our purpose is to flourish as individuals and as a species - we know this from evolutionary theory. Therefore what is good is what helps us to flourish as a species, and what is bad is what hinders that flourishing. How do we know what helps us in this our purpose, and what does not? Science!

Historia
Charles Sanders Peirce is perhaps the greatest philosophical mind to emerge from the United States. He was hugely influential on William James, Alfred North Whitehead, and many other eminent thinkers. This small volume includes two famous essays by Peirce, "The Fixation of Belief" and "Questions Concerning Certain Faculties Claimed for Man." Also included is a short, intellectual biography of Peirce which focuses on his many contributions to science and philosophy. Chosen and very slightly edited by Professor David Christopher Lane, PhD.
