Most of the talk around AI is just that; TALK. Marketing, buzz-words, theories.
In industry, people are focused on their image and on getting immediate profits.
In academia, people are focused on getting funding and on getting their research published.
Most of the media eats this stuff up. You often hear thiings like, "AI is already here, it's in your phone, it's in your browser, etc."
Very rare is it to see anyone approach the REAL question of what is intelligence? How can we understand it's principles and how can we apply those principles in software?
This audiobook introduced me to Numenta. I listened to it a few years ago and even now I'm as excited about it as I was then.
Unraveling the secrets of the neocortex is not something that's going to be done in a few months by some big tech giant, certainly not by the narrow minded AI "experts" in academia and not by the military.
I believe that if anyone is going to solve intelligence before 2100, it's going to be Numenta (the company started by Jeff Hawkins that's working on this problem right now).
It may be an old book but it's still an excellent introduction. This is not about some new trendy technology, it's about building the next era of machine intelligence.
Some of the reviews mention how the book is disorganized. The author explicitly mentions that some parts will go into a lot of technical details. On my first listen I skipped those parts and had no issues. The narrator also has a really deep voice and somehow people find that condescending.
This book is not about AI as you know it today. It's about building a real general learning system like the one we have. It's also not just talk or theories or marketing, the person who wrote this has been working on it for over 10 years now.
Out of all the books I've gone through on audible, very few have had a lasting impact on me like this one had.

Historia
In this eye-opening account, Cal Newport debunks the long-held belief that "follow your passion" is good advice. Not only is the cliché flawed - preexisting passions are rare and have little to do with how most people end up loving their work - but it can also be dangerous, leading to anxiety and chronic job hopping. After making his case against passion, Newport sets out on a quest to discover the reality of how people end up loving what they do.

Initially I was going to give this 2 stars because it felt like I just read a bunch of random stories. Upon further reflection, I decided to bump it up to 4 because even if that's how you see this book, the stories and lessons learned are worth it.
Such as when it talked about cognitive tunneling, lean manufacturing, why some teams are more productive than others, how students who use handwritten notes remember more.
This is one of those books where you should take notes as you read it, otherwise you'll finish it like I did with a vague understanding of what you just read.

I don't normally read history books but almost finished with this one and it's been an amazing listen. Very interesting story and makes you realize why many things in the modern world are the way they are. It's also a part of history that you probably won't hear much about unless you go search for it yourself.

A book to remember
Revisado: 08-08-16
Any additional comments?
I had an intuitive understanding of how to win people over but I could never see the big picture. Books like "How to Win Friends and Influence People" made me realize how important certain details (ie names) were but there wasn't much that I could take away and apply to my own life.
This book helped me make sense of human relationships. When it talked about the friendship formula, everything just clicked.
proximity, frequency, intensity, duration
and here's the crazy part, I read that part of the book about a month ago and still remember it, I will always remember it
Before reading this book, friendships were something that just "happened." but now I can see the underlying process. As a result, I now find social interactions more enjoyable and make friends more easily.
There was more goodness in the book too and after reading some of the other reviews, I think I will go back and give it a second listen.

Historia
In Overcomplicated, complexity scientist Samuel Arbesman offers a fresh, insightful field guide to living with complex technologies that defy human comprehension. As technology grows more complex, Arbesman argues, its behavior mimics the vagaries of the natural world more than it conforms to a mathematical model. If we are to survive and thrive in this new age, we must abandon our need for governing principles and rules and accept the chaos.

Not the type of book you'd read again.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Overcomplicated?
The idea that we should approach complex technology with a similar approach to biology.
Which character – as performed by Sean Pratt – was your favorite?
not applicable
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
...no
Any additional comments?
I was going to give this 4 stars but after thinking about it some more I decided it deserved 5.
The book does not make any exaggerations. Although it was a quick read, it gets you thinking about how we're headed towards a world in which increasingly fewer people understand.
