Terrific Narration
Revisado: 10-30-23
Ian Carmichael sounds like Lord Peter, no surprise since he has played the character on screen. But he also does a stellar job with the other voices and really brings the story to life. It’s a great mystery but does show its age with some unfortunate cultural stereotypes and language.

Historia
Sir John Waveney has inherited Waveney Hall. A veteran of the Great War himself, his inheritance has come because of the deaths in action of his two distant cousins, leaving him as the next male heir. He hopes to make the acquaintance of his two remaining cousins, Lady Jenifer Marr and Anne Belinda. But Lady Marr proves very vague about her twin sister's whereabouts. Is she traveling with a friend or (as has been intimated) has she been incarcerated in a mental institution? No one seems to actually know, and several people seem bent on frustrating John's attempts to find her.

Great narration of a terrific period piece

This is one of my favorite non-Miss Silver books by Patricia Wentworth, particularly the obstinate hero. The narrator does an excellent job.

This is a delightful book with a heroine who falls in love with the countryside and then with the right man. The narrator has done an excellent job of giving each character a distinct personality.

Historia
Bruce Attleton dazzled London’s literary scene with his first two novels, but his early promise did not bear fruit. His wife, Sybilla, is a glittering actress, unforgiving of Bruce’s failure, and the couple lead separate lives in their house at Regent’s Park. When Bruce is called away on a sudden trip to Paris, he vanishes completely until his suitcase and passport are found in a sinister artist’s studio, the Belfry, in a crumbling house in Notting Hill, and Inspector Macdonald must uncover Bruce’s secrets. This intricate mystery from a classic writer is set in a superbly evoked London of the 1930s.

Terrific performance + great story

The narrator did a wonderful job making so many characters distinctive. An excellent and complicated mystery marred only a little by the casual prejudices so common to that era.

Historia
Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) is one of the world's best-selling, most cherished authors of children's literature whose books have enchanted generations for over a hundred years. Yet how she achieved this legendary status is just one of several stories of her remarkable and surprising life. Inspired by her 23 "tales", Matthew Dennison takes a selection of quotations from Potter's stories and uses them to explore her multifaceted life and character: repressed Victorian daughter; thwarted lover; artistic genius; formidable countrywoman.

Ponderous & not as entertaining as it could be
Revisado: 02-06-23
The author is so familiar with all of the voluminous drawings, diaries and notes Beatrix Potter left, and so intent on tracing every single leaf she ever drew to connect it with the same leaf in a story she published twenty years later, that he loses perspective and the reader drowns in minutiae. Thinking back over the book, there is an undertone of the author actually grudging Beatrix her success despite some fierce obstacles (family, societal expectations). Her success isn't described, explained or enjoyed. My frustration with the writing was increased by the narrator's delivery. This book was read by someone determined to place emphasis in every sentence, and it was tiring to listen to.

Historia
The Surrays and their five children form a prolific writing machine, with scores of treatises, reviews and crime thrillers published under their family name. Following a convergence of the whole household at their Oxfordshire home, Ruth—the middle sister—decides to spend some weeks there recovering from the pressures of the writing life. Their next return is heralded by the tragic news that Ruth has taken her life after an evening at the Surrays' hosting a set of publishers and writers, one of whom is named as Ruth's literary executor in the will she left behind.

Great story undone by erratic narration
Revisado: 06-01-22
I love ECR Lorac's books, but the narration does not do this book justice and was so annoying I returned it a few chapters in. There are awkward pauses in the recording and the narrator has a selection of annoying voices. Very disappointed.

Historia
One hundred and fifty years ago, Chawton was the final home of Jane Austen, one of England's finest novelists. Now, it's home to a few distant relatives and their diminishing estate. With the last bit of Austen's legacy threatened, a group of disparate individuals come together to preserve both Jane Austen's home and her legacy. These people - a laborer, a young widow, the local doctor, and a movie star, among others - could not be more different and yet they are united in their love for the works and words of Austen.

Brilliant performance; jarring dialogue
Revisado: 03-30-21
Richard Armitage does his usual brilliant job of creating distinct multiple characters and his performance is outstanding. I can't say the same about the dialogue, which is jarringly 21st century modern for a book set in immediate post-WWII England. The story is charming, if a little too "tick all the boxes", but the author badly needed an editor to point out that no educated British teacher in 1946 would chide someone by saying "It's an ego thing with you". Only the Armitage performance kept me listening, although as it went on, there were paragraphs of 21st century phrasing that set my teeth on edge.

A delight
Revisado: 12-08-20
This is one of my favorite Georgette Heyer romances, containing scenes that make me laugh out loud, not to mention everything necessary in a Regency romance - duels, dances, a trip to Bath, and at least two love triangles. I thought Eve Matheson did a splendid job with the voices, particularly with distinguishing the male characters who are friends and who have a great deal of conversation with each other.

Venetia Lanyon, beautiful, intelligent and independent woman, lives in comfortable seclusion in rural Yorkshire with her precocious brother Aubrey. Her future seems safe and predictable: Either marriage to the respectable but dull Edward Yardley, or a life of peaceful spinsterhood. But when she meets the dashing, dangerous rake Lord Damerel, her well-ordered life is turned upside down, and she embarks upon a relationship with him that scandalizes and horrifies the whole community.

Wonderful but condensed
Revisado: 12-08-20
Richard Armitage does a splendid job, but be aware he is reading a condensed version of the book. The editing has been well-done, and wouldn't be too noticeable if you hadn't read the book. If you have, some sub-plots are missing.

This radio version condenses the original Trollope novel very well, stays true to the story while taking some necessary dramatic license. Well-acted and very enjoyable.
