Historia
Lo Blacklock, a journalist who writes for a travel magazine, has just been given the assignment of a lifetime: a week on a luxury cruise with only a handful of cabins. The sky is clear, the waters calm, and the veneered, select guests jovial as the exclusive cruise ship, the Aurora, begins her voyage in the picturesque North Sea. At first Lo's stay is nothing but pleasant: The cabins are plush, the dinner parties are sparkling, and the guests are elegant. But as the week wears on, frigid winds whip the deck, and gray skies fall.

Cringy at times
Revisado: 11-27-23
The main character made predictable bad decisions over and over. There were times where I find myself angry at her.

Historia
Set in the industrialising England of the Napoleonic wars, a period of bad harvests, Luddite riots, and economic unrest, Shirley is the story of two contrasting heroines and the men they love. One is the shy Caroline Helstone, trapped in the oppressive atmosphere of a Yorkshire rectory, whose life represents the plight of single women in the 19th century. The other is the vivacious Shirley Keeldar, who inherits a local estate and whose wealth liberates her from convention.

I couldn’t get through it.
Revisado: 03-27-20
I love classics, but I’m sorry, I just don’t see what others are getting from this. It was painfully dull for me. 26 hrs of nothing happens. The narrator is very good, but couldn’t compensate for lack of story.

I really didn't "get" this
Revisado: 06-07-15
Just finished listening and find myself wondering what to make of this. I didn't read much about it before downloading and thought it just sounded kind of fun and I suppose it was. Was is the equivalent of a Seinfeld - a book about nothing? If so, I guess we're just supposed to enjoy the characters, which were just ok . . .there is one incident with the dog that, for me, made at least one character absolutely unredeemable, but the characters in the book react fairly lightly to do it. So, even the "good guy" does some pretty questioning things. I don't think I will be continuing on in this series. It makes no sense to me. I love Simon Prebble though so just hearing his voice for a while may have made it worth it.

What was the point of this?
Revisado: 06-04-14
I love this series, but this was very disappointing. I don't get it - for one thing, it's either placed out of order in the series or just goes back in chronology, but at least 60% of it hashes over events that were included in the previous books, often using the exact same words to relate the event. It was previously recorded on cassette and annoyingly tells us to turn the cassette over. I can't help but think the author needed some extra cash for Christmas shopping so hastily pieced together (no pun intended) little bits of previous stories and published a quick summary. Don't bother with this one. You won't miss anything! I will go on to the next and hope that she returns to the well written, enjoyable stories that I have so far loved.

Revisado: 05-25-14
Yes, it was somewhat predictable as another reviewer mentioned, but it was lighthearted and kept my interest from the beginning. I listened to it straight through, of course, while quilting, but even those who don't quilt will enjoy this story. I'm downloading the next one now.

This is another great Banks novel. Someone else mentioned the weird music. I agree - it's jarring and unnecessary. Doesn't belong at all. What were they thinking?

Very slow.
Revisado: 07-14-13
I read the reviews before I downloaded this and, because they were mixed, hoped for the best. Truth is, I'm surprised I got through it, but was working on a project so didn't have time to look for something else. For me, it never got going. Overall, it was just mildly sad and substantially uninteresting . . . . .
