Historia
Opal is a lot of things—orphan, high school dropout, full-time cynic and part-time cashier—but above all, she's a determined to find a better life for her younger brother Jasper. One that gets them out of Eden, Kentucky, a town remarkable for only two things: bad luck and E. Starling, the reclusive nineteenth century author of The Underland, who disappeared over a hundred years ago. All she left behind were dark rumors—and her home. Everyone agrees that it’s best to ignore the uncanny mansion and its misanthropic heir, Arthur. Almost everyone, anyway.

Historia
The city of San Siroco is sinking. The basement of Dr. Tamsin Rivers, the arrogant, selfish head of the research team assigned to find the source of the subsidence, is sinking faster. As Tamsin grows obsessed with the distorting dimensions of the room at the bottom of the stairs, she finds a door that didn’t exist before—and one night, it opens to reveal an exact physical copy of her. This doppelgänger is sweet and biddable where Tamsin is calculating and cruel. It appears fully, terribly human, passing every test Tamsin can devise.

Very weird, more sci-fi than horror
Revisado: 10-17-23
This is one of those books where the narrator is constantly in their head second guessing themselves. I keep listening because I wanted to know the ending but I really didn’t enjoy it.

Historia
When Margaret and her husband Hal bought the large Victorian house on Hawthorn Street—for sale at a surprisingly reasonable price—they couldn’t believe they finally had a home of their own. Then they discovered the hauntings. Every September, the walls drip blood. The ghosts of former inhabitants appear, and all of them are terrified of something that lurks in the basement. Most people would flee. Margaret is not most people. Margaret is staying.

Original story, beautiful narration. I loved how this story was written, not your usual haunted house book but just as scary. Don’t miss this one!

Political preaching is unbearable
Revisado: 09-08-23
I was so excited about this book. What a huge letdown! I love King and his mentioning of his view in past books was fine and minimal. In this book it was so distracting I couldn’t even finish it. Before he used his masterful writing to paint unique characters. In this book he is lazy and uses someone’s vaccine status and political views to let us know if they are a good character or not. For every single interaction! It was tiresome, and frankly insulting.

Loved this book, so glad Caroline Lee is back, I just love her! I liked the last two Moriarty books, but I didn't love them, not like I did this one. Great story and excellent character development. Definitely worth a credit and your time.

Only book I've never finished
Revisado: 12-30-14
What would have made Phantom Evil better?
I'm not sure if it was the ridiculous plot and characters or the narration, but I literally couldn't get through this book without cringing. I have no idea how anyone rated it 4 stars. Maybe the ending makes it worth it but I'll never know since I can't bring myself to finish it.
What was most disappointing about Heather Graham’s story?
The characters are so one-dimensional and the story is underdeveloped. It's like reading an outline rather than a complete book.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
As someone from the south, the southern accents the narrator tries to pull off are ridiculous and half the men sound like women. The basic narration was fine, I wish he would have just stuck to that and not tried to do an accent he clearly cannot pull off. It was so bad I couldn't stand it, like nails on a chalkboard.
