A wonderful story
Revisado: 09-19-23
I loved this story. I loved the cast of characters. It felt at times like interconnected short stories but that did not take away from the novel. This was a very good read.

Nothing happens. Did I miss the boat?
Revisado: 07-30-19
I feel like I truly missed the boat on this one. To my great surprise, this book was dull and boring. Nothing happens. No intrigue, no climax, no nothing. For me, this was not a good read.

Abandoned at the 50% mark. Couldn’t connect with this story or its characters at all. The more I listened the more disinterested I became.

After three hours in, there was still no story line or character that grabbed me. I slowly became more and more disinterested in the story. For me, this was not a good listen.

Historia
In a secret, subterranean world beneath the prairie of the Old West, a homesteader risks her life in search of a safe haven. A workman in Andrew Carnegie's steel mills is turned into a medical oddity by the brutal power of the furnaces. A young woman created through genetic manipulation is destroyed by the same force that gave her life. With her distinctive blend of magical realism, science, and poetic prose, Anjali Sachdeva demonstrates a preternatural ability to laser in on our fears, our hopes, and our longings in order to point out intrinsic truths about society and humanity.

This is an interesting collection but I didn’t connect with any of the protagonists in any of the stories. It just wasn’t for me.

Historia
Brilliantly executed and compulsively listenable, Unsheltered is the story of two families, in two centuries, who live at the corner of Sixth and Plum, as they navigate the challenges of surviving a world in the throes of major cultural shifts. In this mesmerizing story told in alternating chapters, Willa and Thatcher come to realize that though the future is uncertain, even unnerving, shelter can be found in the bonds of kindred - whether family or friends - and in the strength of the human spirit.

Terrific

Once again, an absolute winner from Barbara Kingsolver. A history lesson (Mary Treat), social commentary, and just an all around terrific story by a terrific writer.

Historia
Everything about 15-year-old Cat's new town in rural Michigan is lonely and off-kilter until she meets her neighbor, the manic, beautiful, pill-popping Marlena. Cat, inexperienced and desperate for connection, is quickly lured into Marlena's orbit by little more than an arched eyebrow and a shake of white-blond hair. As the two girls turn the untamed landscape of their desolate small town into a kind of playground, Cat catalogues a litany of firsts - first drink, first cigarette, first kiss - while Marlena's habits harden and calcify.

Gritty, raw, good.
Revisado: 10-26-17
Gritty and bleak, but also hopeful. I liked the contrast between the grown-up Cat and the adolescent Cat who was enveloped in Marlena's world. That is, I liked reading of Cat's reflections on that brief time with Marlena, that so defined the rest of her life. The book was not mawkish. A good read (listen).
