Historia
What do you do after you write a #1 best-selling book about your drunken, sexual misadventures that makes you rich and famous? Celebrate by getting more drunk and having insane amounts of sex, obviously. And pretty soon you've got another f-ing book on your hands. Stuffed full of ridiculous stories of bad decisions, debauchery, and sexual recklessness, Assholes Finish First starts where I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell left off, then proceeds to "some next-level shit."

Quick start but peters out
Revisado: 09-20-21
This book starts pretty funny and with a good pace, but after the first story (bullhorn) it grinds to a slow painful slog through marginally funny, mostly embarrassing or gross anecdotes. At some points I felt pretty grungy after reading sections, like I needed to wash the images away. I finished it only so I didn't break my streak of finishing books. But probably should have moved on to something better after the first 50 pages. But you might like it, everyone's different that way.

Historia
The Simulmatics Corporation, founded in 1959, mined data, targeted voters, accelerated news, manipulated consumers, destabilized politics, and disordered knowledge - decades before Facebook, Google, Amazon, and Cambridge Analytica. Silicon Valley likes to imagine that it has no past, but the scientists of Simulmatics are the long-dead grandfathers of Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk. Borrowing from psychological warfare, they used computers to predict and direct human behavior, deploying their “People Machine” from New York, Cambridge, and Saigon.

Amazing story, needs professional narration
Revisado: 09-12-21
Fascinating story and amazing research. But the pacing, quality, and voicing of the narration is distracting and awkward (to my taste).

Historia
It is 997 CE, the end of the Dark Ages. England is facing attacks from the Welsh in the west and the Vikings in the east. Those in power bend justice according to their will, regardless of ordinary people and often in conflict with the king. Without a clear rule of law, chaos reigns. In these turbulent times, three characters find their lives intertwined.

Good quick read; not quite Pillars of the Earth
Revisado: 08-20-21
A really nice read that was better in the middle than the beginning or the end. Some intrigue and dastardly deeds, and good characters. Highlight is the voice acting, which made it easy to "see" the characters and their personalities. Recommended.

Historia
The Emperor of All Maladies reveals the many faces of an iconic, shape-shifting disease that is the defining plague of our generation. The story of cancer is a story of human ingenuity, resilience, and perseverance but also of hubris, arrogance, paternalism, and misperception, all leveraged against a disease that, just three decades ago, was thought to be easily vanquished in an all-out "war against cancer".

Amazing
Revisado: 07-04-21
Simply put, this is probably the best book I have and will ever read. I like science, but I'm not a scientist. I like stories, but not drama. The Emperor of all melodies satisfies on fronts. Well researched, well organized, and we'll narrated. Highest recommendation from me, fwiw.

Amazing story, below average writing
Revisado: 10-14-18
The author describes an amazing story first hand, but the combination of he said-she said narration and otherwise so-so writing detracts form the gravity of the events.

Historia
How big is the universe? How many numbers are there? And is infinity + 1 is the same as 1 + infinity? Such questions occur to young children and our greatest minds. And they are all the same question: What is infinity? In Beyond Infinity, Eugenia Cheng takes us on a staggering journey from elemental math to its loftiest abstractions. Along the way, she considers how to use a chessboard to plan a worldwide dinner party, how to make a chicken-sandwich sandwich, and how to create infinite cookies from a finite ball of dough.

Sad to get to the end

A really pleasant, thought provoking book. And such a pleasant narrator. (Only minor thing is there are figures in the physical book that would be nice reference in some way while listening.)

Historia
In 2007, a short blogpost by Gawker Media outed PayPal founder and billionaire investor Peter Thiel as gay. Thiel's sexuality had been known to close friends and family, but he didn't consider himself a public figure, and believed the information was private. This post would be the casus belli for a meticulously plotted conspiracy that would end nearly a decade later with a $140 million dollar judgment against Gawker and its bankruptcy. Only later would the world learn that Gawker's demise was not incidental - it had been masterminded by Thiel.

Good book, not great performance.
Revisado: 04-01-18
I thought this was a very well written book about a fascinating set of events and the people involved. Very thought provoking and well written. However, it would have been more enjoyable to listen to with a professional voice actor as opposed to the author. For me, his pace, relatively flat tine, and punctuated delivery made listening to the book difficult. The story shines though, and all in all, well worth sticking with it.
