Kevin R Free is the BEST!

The story is great. The characters are very human and believable. But it couldn't be better performed, and Free's performance turns this from a good book into a great listen.

Let me also say that this is not your typical "robot" story series because the bots are all more human than many of the humans in fiction. Murderbot has doubts, anxiety and a lot of "who cares". In later books there are bots that will remind you of some of the kids you hated at school, but who come through in the end. It's a great series.

Great listen and re-listen

Wil Weaton is God! I see that some people didn't like this version but I'm on my second time through and absolutely loving it. Weaton brings out the humor in the book perfectly. I started to watch the film but it so pales in comparison - not funny, not enough science. Hey, Andy Weir, you're great, too!

Firesign theater meets Negativland

A great show in the spirit of radio plays. MORE PLEASE. Plus the actors are great and the sound effects in eerily 3d stereo. I’m going back for a second listen.

Maybe good book but reading poor

I’ve read and listened to other books by this author and very much enjoyed them. This reader’s approach is not in keeping with the sense of Scalzi’s writing. I couldn’t get beyond the first chapter.

Stop with the violance against women

I have enjoyed Forder's books but I couldn't finish this one because of the use of rape and violence against women as the plot line. Honestly, it's hard to find a mystery that doesn't have rape somewhere in its story or back story and there are few women characters that escape this fate. But can we just stop that NOW? Constantly portraying women as victims, and especially as victims of sexual violence, perpetuates the vision that all women are potential, and desirable, victims. Add to the fact that the graphic detail in this book shows that the author does not understand the physical violence he is describing, such that it comes across as a pornographic rape fantasy. PLEASE DO BETTER!

Read with heart

I am always skeptical when a book is read by the author and my first impression in this case was not positive. However this is a book with much emotion in the story and hearing it in Stelter’s voice in the end made the impact that much greater.

Good writing but way too much Commando

I’ve enjoyed Forder’s books but he has slipped too far into action hero territory and that makes these books overly cartoonish. In too many places I could anticipate the exact words that would finish the sentence. I generally read British mysteries precisely because they are low on the macho scale which makes the characters more enjoyable. If you favor US action authors then this is right up your alley.

Too cruel for my taste

The story is good but I couldn’t finish the book because of aspects and incidents of cruelty that I found to be unbearably disturbing. If I remember I will avoid this author in the future.
