Historia
Young Elly's world is shaped by those who inhabit it: her loving but maddeningly distractible parents; a best friend who smells of chips and knows exotic words like 'slag'; an ageing fop who tapdances his way into her home, a Shirley Bassey impersonator who trails close behind; lastly, of course, a rabbit called God. In a childhood peppered with moments both ordinary and extraordinary, Elly's one constant is her brother Joe. Twenty years on, Elly and Joe are fully grown and as close as they ever were. Until, that is, an earth-shattering event that threatens to destroy their bond for ever.

I have a new favorite author 🩷
Revisado: 01-04-25
I’m so happy audible suggested this book! What a beautifully written story, both at the sentence level and overall. Many authors stink at narrating their own work but SW is EXPERT. It contains all the elements I love in a great book—heart, humor, quirky endearing characters, a bit of tragedy that drives and bonds the characters and a full-circle ending that leaves your heart full. I give this my highest recommendation! A great way to start my year of reading (January 2025)

Historia
After Lucy is found wandering the streets, covered in her best friend Savvy’s blood, everyone thinks she is a murderer. Lucy and Savvy were the golden girls of their small Texas town: pretty, smart, and enviable. Lucy married a dream guy with a big ring and an even bigger new home. Savvy was the social butterfly loved by all, and if you believe the rumors, especially popular with the men in town. It’s been years since that horrible night, a night Lucy can’t remember anything about, and she has since moved to LA and started a new life.

Historia
Lucas knows the perfect night entails just three things: video games, wine, and pad thai. Peanuts are a must! Other people? Not so much. Why complicate things when he’s happy alone? Then one day the apartment board, a vexing trio of authority, rings his doorbell. And Lucas’s solitude takes a startling hike. They demand to see his frying pan. Someone left one next to the recycling room overnight, and instead of removing the errant object, as Lucas suggests, they insist on finding the guilty party. But their plan backfires. Colossally.

Love Backman, wrong narrator
Revisado: 12-07-24
I love FB. His writing is quirky and his characters are endearingly curmudgeon. The narrator is right for many books, and I like her, but anything by Backman should probably be read by someone who gets his style and doesn’t make the characters sound so shrill and annoying. I blame the director/producer. Too bad but I’ll have to read this with eyes to capture his voice.

As the daughter of a drug dealer, Wavy knows not to trust people, not even her own parents. It's safer to keep her mouth shut and stay out of sight. Struggling to raise her little brother, Donal, eight-year-old Wavy is the only responsible adult around. Obsessed with the constellations, she finds peace in the starry night sky above the fields behind her house until one night her stargazing causes an accident. After witnessing his motorcycle wreck, she forms an unusual friendship with one of her father's thugs, Kellen, a tattooed ex-con with a heart of gold.

Beautiful writing. Hard story.
Revisado: 08-26-24
This is a hard one for me. The writing is itself gorgeous. The story is compelling for its own sake IF you can allow the context of the character’s emotional and psychological experiences and development to color your perception. But…that’s the thing. In the real world there’s no way I’d ever allow myself to consider this acceptable. Self contained in this book where we understand the nuance, well, okay. Take it for what it is—but it was still hard to choke down in some places. EVEN as Kellen was sympathetic as a character because of what he meant to Wavy as the ONLY person looking out her her—IRL he’d be major ick. This writer took on a very daring story and probably only worked because her writing is so good.

Revisado: 06-10-24
Like ground hog day for dating, at times LOL funny, and if you have dated for any length of time on the apps or found yourself single again after being married or partnered for a time you will appreciate the multi-layered metaphors of this book. Miranda Raison is chef’s kiss in her narration and Lauren’s character arc is relatable and endearing as well as entertaining. I loved it!

Revisado: 12-21-23
Hill doesn’t just write—he spins a yarn so detailed and well developed, the characters so fully fleshed out and considered from all angles, you really feel like you understand them at a granular level. And Ari Fliakos is the perfect narrator for his novels. Don’t skip this one. It’s brilliant.

Historia
It’s been a decade since Trumanell Branson disappeared, leaving only a bloody handprint behind. Her pretty face still hangs like a watchful queen on the posters on the walls of the town’s Baptist church, the police station, and in the high school. They all promise the same thing: We will find you. Meanwhile, Tru's brother, Wyatt, lives as a pariah in the desolation of the old family house, cleared of wrongdoing by the police but tried and sentenced in the court of public opinion and in a new documentary about the crime.

Historia
In the wake of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the late 20th century was a time of unprecedented hope for democracy and freedom in Eastern Europe. Young writers, journalists, and adventurers such as Katya Cengel flocked from the West eastward to cities like Prague and Budapest, seeking out terra nova. Despite the region’s appeal, neither Kyiv in the Ukraine nor Riga in Latvia was the type of place you would expect to find a 22-year-old Californian just out of college. But Cengel ended up living and working in both. This book is her remarkable story.

Story is Great
Revisado: 01-30-23
I couldn’t handle the narrator —who seems to read everything way too chipper — she’s all wrong for this book. So I read this one with my eyes and it was an excellent story. The one star review is clearly due to the narrator, not the writer. The narrator is key and can influence a story in big ways.
