Historia
George W. Bush, the 43rd president of the United States, has authored a personal biography of his father, George H. W. Bush, the 41st president. Forty-three men have served as president of the United States. Countless books have been written about them. But never before has a president told the story of his father, another president, through his own eyes and in his own words. A unique and intimate biography, the book covers the entire scope of the elder President Bush’s life and career.

Engaging listen
Revisado: 02-27-25
Aside from revisiting how GW Bush mispronounces nuclear, this was a nice story well read with some insights on key events. I have always thought GHW Bush was the best example of how Presidents should carry themselves and this story reinforces that thought.

Historia
What is fascism? By focusing on the concrete, what the fascists did rather than what they said, the esteemed historian Robert O. Paxton answers this question for the first time. From the first violent uniformed bands beating up "enemies of the state", through Mussolini's rise to power, to Germany's fascist radicalization in World War II, Paxton shows clearly why fascists came to power in some countries and not others.

Incomplete Analysis
Revisado: 01-01-22
The author’s distaste for fascism was diminished by his diminishment of the problems inherent in socialist, military and communist dictatorships but my main issue with the book is his omission of an analysis of the role free institutions run by cultural elites play in creating the conditions in which fascist movements are born. The economic conditions in Germany and Italy after WW1 were the tinder that fed these movements and those conditions were created both internally and externally by the free institutions run by cultural elites. Saying that fascism rises from a class of people who feel underserved by the free institutions in its country is to ignore what for many is an intolerable condition. Analyzing what free institutions need to do to avoid creating a seeming permanent underclass filled with grievance would have made this work more satisfying and complete.

Historia
Following September 11, the United States successfully overthrew the Taliban regime. It established security throughout the country, and Afghanistan finally began to emerge from more than two decades of conflict. But Jones argues that, as early as 2001, planning for the Iraq War siphoned off resources and talented personnel, undermining the gains that had been made. After eight years, the United States had pushed al-Qaeda’s headquarters about one hundred miles across the border into Pakistan.

This gives you a good look at the US history in Afghanistan. Helpful to understand what was lost in our recent withdrawal.

Historia
In this intimate, haunting, literary memoir read by the author, an American icon tells her story for the first time, in her own gorgeous words - about a challenging and lonely childhood, the craft that helped her find her voice, and a powerful emotional legacy that shaped her journey as a daughter and a mother.

Depressing
Revisado: 07-24-21
I read autobiographies to hear in first person the view of a lifetime of successes and failures, joy and sorrow. If Ms Field’s life has been depressing as this book I feel sad for her and hope in her elder years she finds the joy she failed to notice around her throughout her life. He work includes many films and TV shows that enriched and added joy to my life. It is sad that, reading this book, they failed to give her the same joy or if so she chose to dwell on the sadness and anxiety. In the end I would trade the joy her work brought me if not doing it would have meant more joy for her.

Historia
Four days before Christmas in 1943, a badly damaged American bomber struggled to fly over wartime Germany. At its controls was a 21-year-old pilot. Half his crew lay wounded or dead. It was their first mission. Suddenly a sleek, dark shape pulled up on the bomber’s tail - a German Messerschmitt fighter. Worse, the German pilot was an ace, a man able to destroy the American bomber with the squeeze of a trigger.

Outstanding

A wonderful WW2 story with a timeless theme “we’re better of as friends than as enemies”. Well written and a very moving story. As a career USAF aviator this touched my heart in ways I never imagined possible.
