Historia
Somewhere on the frontier between thought and reality exists the Discworld, a parallel time and place that might sound and smell very much like our own, but which looks completely different. Particularly as it’s carried though space on the back of a giant turtle (sex unknown). It plays by different rules. But then, some things are the same everywhere. The Disc’s very existence is about to be threatened by a strange new blight: the world’s first tourist, upon whose survival rests the peace and prosperity of the land.

Bring Back Nigel Planer!
Revisado: 07-12-22
Colin Morgan just does not have the comic timing for Pratchett's humor. Planer was perfect for this series. Morgan's characterization is bad as well. And much of his narration is nearly unintelligible. I was extremely excited to get a new version of this whole series, getting rid of Stephen Briggs as the series narrator since he was a step down from Planer. But Morgan is two or three steps down from Planer. I'll likely give another title a try in the new version of the series, perhaps one of the "Witches" books to let Indira Varma give it a go. I'm willing to bet she's great. But Colin Morgan just doesn't stand a chance with me. I'll likely return this book and stick with my versions that have Nigel doing the narration. WAY better even if the recording quality is old and imperfect.

Love the Booktrack Editions!
Revisado: 10-22-20
I purchased Red Country a couple months ago and Loved it. When I logged on to Audible today, I saw the Booktrack edition. I had no idea what "Booktrack Edition" meant, so I read the blurb about the added music/soundtrack. I listened to the sample and thought it was awesome! The music REALLY adds to the narration. Luckily, Audible allows returns and exchanges. So I returned my non-booktrack edition of this audiobook and snagged the Booktrack edition. Listening to it again right now! LOVE it! Please, Audible! Do this to MORE books! At least add it to all of the books in Abercrombie's First Law world!

Most Over-hyped Book Award Winner!
Revisado: 06-27-20
This book is NOT good. I normally don't review books, but I feel so betrayed by this one. Not only betrayed by the book, but by all of the hype around it. I was told by a coworker how wonderful this book is and there are so many glowing reviews of it on Goodreads. I was ready for a stunner. I guess I should have researched to learn that these reviewers also reviewed the Twilight Saga the same way! BUT, it is easily the least interesting listen for me all year and perhaps even for several years. There is not ONE character that I was invested in and that's choosing from a boatload of characters. You'd think at least one of the plethora of characters could get me attached to them in some way. But no. Not an ounce of interest in any of them. And world-building? There's scarce little of that! What a boring, two-dimensional world! Not even DRAGONS could make this story interesting. You read that right! Dragons in a story and still no thrills! Very little in the way of action doesn't help matters. Best-case scenario, this is a mediocre, generic fantasy story. That's absolutely the nicest I can put it. There is chain-mail, swords and dragons. Apparently that's all it takes to get a fantasy novel published these days.

Historia
Seventy years ago, the interstellar supercarrier Ark Royal was the pride of the Royal Navy. But now, her weapons are outdated and her solid-state armour nothing more than a burden on her colossal hull. She floats in permanent orbit near Earth, a dumping ground for the officers and crew the Royal Navy wishes to keep out of the public eye. But when a deadly alien threat appears, the modern starships built by humanity are no match for the powerful alien weapons.

Space opera? More like Space High School Drama Cla
Revisado: 12-02-16
This novel reads much like an aspiring teenage author's Writers' Workshop submission. The dialogue is that of an amateur's. The character development is pretty much non-existent. The interpersonal relationships also ring of a teenage mentality. Women are one dimensional (if that!) They are all weak and clearly there just as objects of a lonely teenager's wet dream. Nuttall was/is obviously very unpopular with the ladies, because he knows absolutely NOTHING about women. The female characters' reactions to events are exactly what an unpopular, never-had-a-date 14 year old boy might picture in his hormone-soaked brain. The action scenes lack any real science or military knowledge. Nuttall knows nothing of how the military works (in practice or in relation to politics). He tries to follow Royal Navy protocol but somehow mixes up the ranks of Captain and Commodore. Research into Military Science, the physics of space, psychology of human beings (let alone, military personnel) and so many other fields is totally lacking. All of this in addition to the fact that NONE of his main characters are ever in any real danger of being killed off! EVERY single one of them survives. The only people that die are nameless cannon fodder pilots and marines not unlike the generic Star Trek Redshirts that beam down to alien planets with Kirk and Spock. Come on! If you want us to care about your characters, we have to believe that they are actually in danger. Not sure where all of the 5-star reviews are coming from for this book. Maybe his mom and grandma REALLY like his stuff! I applaud Nuttall's efforts in writing. Hey! He's TRYING at least. But there's a reason that these books are self-published. It's because no publishing house would touch this drivel. I wanted to give up on this book but I ALWAYS finish books. I feel that I can't disagree with an author's ideas if I haven't seen them all the way through. Sometimes that philosophy bites me in the backside. This is one of those times!

Time is a resource. Everyone knows it has to be managed. And on the Discworld that is the job of the Monks of History, who store it and pump it from the places where it's wasted (like the underwater; how much time does a codfish need?) to places like cities, where there's never enough time.

I'm done with Briggs
Revisado: 11-08-15
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Go back and redo all of the Briggs narration by getting Nigel back! I only gave the performance of this book ONE star because I wasn't allowed to continue with a review if I left the performance stars at zero. But Briggs is a ZERO!
What was one of the most memorable moments of Thief of Time?
Deciding that I was done listening to any Discworld books that Stephen Briggs narrates. Too bad! I LOVE the Discworld books but I will read the print versions from here on out. Briggs ruined these books. I can at least read the remaining ones and try to hear Nigel Planer's voice in my head. Briggs is TERRIBLE!
How did the narrator detract from the book?
His lip smacking or tongue clicking or whatever it is he does is SO annoying. He has about three different voices that he performs. One is an Asian-sounding character, another is supposed to fill in for the female characters and the third is a lip-smacking British fellow that portrays EVERYONE else. How disappointing!!! Nigel had completely different voices for EVERY character. Briggs' version of Death is not much different than any of the other characters. Nigel's Death (and all of his other characters) was amazing! I think I'm actually going to stop listening to this series. Pratchett's wit, wisdom, humor and awesome storytelling is lost when Briggs performs these books. Hard to even follow the story-line
Could you see Thief of Time being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
Not if Briggs plays any of the characters! Get Nigal to play the voice of Death! That would be a start.
Any additional comments?
I've decided I'm going to have to READ these books from here on. I can't stand the narration of Stephen Briggs. He's awful. I generally say that ANY British reader is a good narrator but I will NOT listen to another book read by Stephen Briggs! WORST reader I've ever listened to. My Audible membership is in jeopardy!

In spite of a bad reader, this book is still great
Revisado: 09-05-15
If you could sum up The Fifth Elephant in three words, what would they be?
I miss Nigel
What did you like best about this story?
Pratchett's stuff is awesome. Even a bad reader can't destroy Discworld's enchantment.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Stephen Briggs?
There's no way I can just stop going though Discworld so I have no choice since Briggs reads the rest of the books in this series and I'm sure I'll get used to him. But his range of characters just isn't even close to Nigel's.
